    Hello Grim.
Yet another good video, and one upon a topic fondly remembered by me from my youth. I first encountered Dune, the original book, at the tender age of 13 or 14 years old. This would be the early or mid 1970's. It was NOT my first introduction to 'Space Opera', since I had encountered Edward E. 'Doc' Smith's series about the Lensmen.
But Dune was so much more detailed. And I admit, that at times, I felt I needed a score card, check off list, and a guide to make sense of it all.
The universe that Frank Herbert created for Dune, and the later novels, is highly complex, layered, and extremely detailed. So much so, that many of my friends gave up trying to understand it and ceased reading the novel before they could absorb enough background for things to start to make sense.
I could make comparisons of aspects of the Dune Universe to other novels and movies for days, but I will only mention one here... Ecology. Dune is very well depicted in the novel and detailed, and in the 3-part mini series back in 2003 made sure to highlight the ecological nature of the book. The most recent movie with a similar theme might be the 2009 Sci-Fi film, Avatar.
So, having said all this, I would be highly pleased if you continued this series of videos. I will not 'nudge your elbow', so to speak, with my own desires as to the content. Since I am curious to see your interpretation of the vast pool of information Frank created, and your 'take' on all it's aspects.
    Spoken Frank-ly.
    The Spice, MUST flow.

As I understood from the books although i read them many years ago the navigator guild ships are just huge engineless cylinders and the mutated navigators by bending space 'move' them to an other location in a mysterious process.
Water is not really a shortage on Dune but more of a religious thing. As I understood they are gathering every water possible in great underground basins (much more they actually need) for the coming of Messiah. They probably gathered waters from outsiders too they killed.
In my opinion the next video should be about the spice, its role, usage, source, effects.
Then the third video should be the navigator guild as game masters of the known universe.

Given that you chose to deal with the books alone, the end quotation is unexpected, as that comes from the first movie adaptation rather than the novels. (The adaptation by David Lynch in 1984, in the 2, 4, or 6-hour version, which get progressively easier to understand the longer they are, have had an enormous impact on the way the setting looks in later art. For no reason from the novels, almost all later representations of Shaddam IV look like the one in the David Lynch movie, particularly notable being his neat triangular beard, which is not mentioned in the book but is almost always worn by later versions. Weirding modules are popular items in some game adaptations, but they also are only in the movie, 'weirding' in the books simply being techniques unknown to the speaker but identified as extremely powerful.
Other things to not miss out on: The Bene Tlielaxu and their axolotl tanks and the products thereof, the Spacing Guild and the Guild Law and Guild Peace, the Ixians and their extremely valuable and barely legal products (along with occasional clearly illegal one)s, the Mentats and what they can do and why they exist, CHOAM and how it interconnects all the factions, and later the Fish Speakers, the God-Emperor and his downfall, The Scattering, the Honored Matres and their war with the remains of the Empire, the re-emergence of the Synchronized Worlds, the Golden Path and why Paul cannot bear to follow it and his son can, the various types of extrapersonal memory, Awareness Spectrum Narcotics and their uses...
Frank Herbert is generally considered to be the first science fiction author to recognize that the people who live in a place are affected by that place, and the more extreme the place the more extreme the affect. It is impossible to overstate the importance of water and it's conservation in Fremen culture. It completely dominates things as small as how they phrase things, and as big as how they conduct funerals and marriages. The importance of preserving water also highlights the importance of the situations where Fremen will willingly discard water.

      @GrimDarkNarrator  Před 4 lety

I'm gonna be using movie material even if I talk about the books. While there's a lot of fan art on Dune, representations of a lot of things from the universe are still best served by images from the movies, I think.

subtle is definitely the right word for dune. i agree with your themes, however i would add a somewhat troubling theme. the manipulation or exploitation of religion. paul (trying no to spoil) cant do what he does without someone else laying the foundation for him to take advantage of the fremin. Makes me wonder what herbert's thoughts were on religion.

Oh, there's many more themes outside what I mentioned. I just named a couple of them off my head.

Star Wars was not in the poll. it was Star Trek. Although I'd do Star Wars too if I knew it would get views, lol.

SW is great SciFi but too much social and political stuff. They took the joy from it.

From what I read that's the date according to the so called BG and AG system. the date 10,191 is AG, which is After Guild. B.G is Before Guild. so the date in the AG might be 10k but it would still be 20-21k in our normal dating system.
