As I was a taxi driver for 40 years 30 hrs private hire & 10 yrs black cabs all my cabs lasted over 300k miles.the main reason for this is two fold.number one constant hot engines don’t wear.number two you must change oil & filter every 5k miles.as for the build quality of bodywork on individual vehicles could be a very different matter.
I bought a 2001 Passat TDi PD 130 Estate for £160 about 8 years ago. Hit 575k miles last year but took it off the road for some new subframe bushes and rear axle bushes
That's very impressive! Can't go wrong with a TDI
Yes,those VW PD engines are good.Have one at 302,000 miles. However had to replace camshaft at 260,000 when a valve lifter collapsed and ate the cam lobe.Oddly enough all other lifters and lobes had little to no wear. However not the end of the world.Would agree on rear suspension bushes,a know VW follicle as are rear brake calipers.
Honda jazz is a bumper car that won’t die , good old v-tec 💪🏻
Having owned a number of Mondeos all high milers I can confirm that I agree with your finding. In fact a couple of years ago a Taxi driver did over 1 million miles in one.
Thanks Steve! Really cool to share and yes, Mondeos are infact better than people realise
I had a 2001 V6 mondeo which developed a comon steering fault, my mechanics didn't want to touch the car so I sold it for spares or repair. Few years later, my friend had a 2004 TDI which developed the same fault. Someone tried to fix that car, but it was junk after with regular steering, brake, airbag faults and many ongoing problems.
However, I loved my Mondeo when it was good.
My Volvo S60 Diesel from 2011 just passed 210k and still going strong 😎 I changed the alternator once and pretty much that's it other than timing belt, brakes, oil, battery and tyres.
They are beasts!
Volvo and Honda is very good car
I’ve be to Turkey, taxi drivers likes Fiat Tipo, I’ve seen lots Tips with from 500 k till 1 million kilometres on their clocks
First Mondeo st tdci I had did 225k and I nailed it everywhere but I serviced it very regularly. Quick comfortable work horse for no money and broke hearts of many 320s at the lights so yes he's correct. As long as you service them but sadly most people don't
I agree about the skoda but Absolutely no way would a Ford Mondeo last 500k miles A mk5 especially! Nor would a Vauxhall Astra.
I know of both of these with 500k
@@volt8684 post a picture and I might believe you!
When I heard him mentioning Ford and Vauxhall and left Honda out....Well all his credibility on cars was lost.
Depends which Mondeo engine it is. The 1.8 diesels will easily achieve it. Vauxhall's however not a chance I got a Mk5 astra to 150k and it was absolutely shagged. Currently running a Civic 2.2 diesel and it's solid as a rock.
@terry141186 , Honda petrol will always outlive any ford or vauxhall even if they were nuclear powered. They are just bad, great exterior design but the engines 😢😢😢 are as bad as bad can be...they just are.
For me the Toyota Prius 2010-2016 models (I am not a cabbie but LOVE them in white still looks cool)
The Technology in this cars is crazy and with normal driving CRAZY amount of MPG....hands the winner plus it will never break down..
Fiesta V (mk6) 1.4 tdci. incredibly well built and rust proofed, quite rugged, a best of type Peugeot diesel engine under the bonnet mated to an equally strong Ford 5-speed box, good electrics too. the only major weaknesses are in the drivers seat metalwork (can be strengthened) and the original factory fitted road springs.
I'm the 5th owner of mine which is 22 years old and has 264,000 miles on the clock. it still drives like its a couple of years old.
another one for this list is the Mazda B2500/Ford Ranger. virtually indestructable, its only the rust that gets them in the end.
you can buy any car with a long lasting pedigree but if you don't maintain it properly it will turn into a dog just like any other.
Interesting list. My family have driven Mazdas for 50 years. Absolutely bullet proof...especially the 323's and 626's.
Love the superb ❤️
Will hopefully be my new daily later
Skoda's are so good for their reliability and seem to keep on going!
@@CarsWithBen Yeah I agree :)
My current skoda is at 22.000+ now :)
I'm just about to pass 100,000 miles in my 1L Toyota Aygo... Still running as well as the day I bought it with 10,000 miles and has a rust free chassis. I did put a layer of waxoyl underbody seal on though to hopefully prevent any starting and I service the car every 5,000 miles it's due it's first coolant change this year (100k/10 years). The most I've ever seen on an Aygo is 256,000 miles.
u right Japanese is best vaxhull astra all have head gasket problems after 70000 mil bad engine
Which generation or which year model Aygo is it? Thanks
@@iAdam368 it's the 2012 facelift version. Currently on 109000 miles. Only work really is just regular servicing
@@user-so8wh4xf3t My mum has a 2012 VW polo diesel. She has nothing but issues but most of it is cause by the emissions control systems. Like the EGR and the DPF. I can imagine they wouldn't get as dirty on a petrol engine but I'm glad the Aygo doesn't have an EGR valve, there is a location on the engine that can be machined out to fit and EGR but I think that's for the 1KR-FE engines fitted in the Yaris. I only discovered it when I downloaded a full engine schematic for the 1KR-FE and I saw an EGR valve fitted in the schematic, convinced my car didn't have one I located the location and on the Aygo it's a flat part of the engine casting in the shape of the EGR mating surface, just it hasn't been machined out to fit one.
@@micheals1992My first brand new car after 25 years driving was a new Polo TDI Match, with the three cylinder 1.2 engine. It was extremely economical, rather odd to get used to the turbo lag on it and it sounded great but the steering was awful, it was so light, had no feeling when going faster. It also creaked and rattled a bit when new but the steering issue was unsafe, I should have taken it in but as id had other issues with it, I got rid after about 2 months. Very disappointed to have to do that. I got an Abarth 500 after that.
I have a late 2012 Toyota Auris Hybrid, and I've just clocked 124k miles. Still drives like a dream, and of course, the fuel economy is truly outstanding at 68 to 74 mpg in the winter and 74 to well over 80 mpg in the summer.
The main reason is the engine is not used as much with being a hybrid. Thats why they are a sensible purchase and can do huge mileages. Only downside is the hybrid batteries, they will need replacing eventually at a lot of cost, thats what puts me off buying one but I know I will save a lot in petrol money with the far greater economy. Choices choices…
Not a single Nissan on this list.Thank god! Namely, Micra, Almera, Primera. I've owned all three at some point. I put 30,000 miles on each one of these cars within a year. I'm sure they would have broken down at some point in the future which is not good. I've heard some good things about Vauxhalls. Truly superb engineering. I can't wait to get one.
would you buy a toyota avensis 2012 or Skoda Rapid 2013 with 200k miles on the clock??? I've been offered each for 1500.
Honda civics seem immortal. Volvo estates .
I crossed 3 Laks miles civic 1.8 UK , I think this CZcamsr don't know this best engine manufacturer in the world😂😂
Have had several civics and currently own a 2007 2.2 diesel. Can confirm they are absolutely solid cars so long as you can keep the rust at bay.
Had one or two Vauxhalls always engine management lights coming on mainly caused by the mass air flow meter.what a pain that was.nowadays I steer clear of Vauxhall.
Not quite as reliable nowadays but never been perfect anyway
Just hit 180,000km in my 2016 Ford Galaxy which is built on the Mondeo platform. Must say I fuckin love it. So much room for the family and crap in the enormous boot and does 40’ish mpg.
Water pump and timing belt just done, serviced the auto box last week and serviced regularly in general.
I’m really hoping it’ll get to 250,000km. I do about 15,000 per year so I’ll be there in about 5 years.
In the three years I’ve owned it so far it’s been absolutely bulletproof, just regularly servicing needed and I chose to service the auto box just in case it had never been done.
PSA 2.0 diesel?
@@19jacobob93 it’s 2ltr diesel yes
My Prius 3rd gen 345k madness but it now does have a worn out head gasket
My 2005 Civic has 147k on it. Currently at a gearbox specialist having a gearbox rebuild due to the dreaded input shaft bearing issue other than that it still looks and drives like a new car and everything electrical still works.
I-shift? I-shift is poor.
@@ln5747 no 5 speed manual ishift was never offered with this model of civic in the UK.
@@terry141186 normal torque converter?
I have he dreaded input shaft bearing issue but it is uneconomical to repair my 2001 civic as I bought it for a grand a year ago and the repair is around that including VAT😣
@@davapodI got mine done for £650 all in. That includes a new clutch and slave cylinder too. I have since sold the car to a friend as I was given a mk8 2.2 diesel civic for free. It's still going strong and he's got the mileage up to 180k. Its worth getting it done imo as the rest of the car will just keep going.
Thinking of buying vauxhall insignia elite nat 2 litre diesel 123k on clock and 63 plate
Any suggestions worth buying? Cheers
I know this is a late reply but if you did get it keep an eye on the oil pressure warning as the 2.0 diesels like to blow a seal in the oil pump that causes oil pressure to disappear and destroy the engine if you don't react to it quickly. They also like to eat the main bearings in the gearbox and shit 6th gear out (happened to me)
Our newest car is a skoda octavia. We bought it with £150k miles on the clock. But it's been well very maintained 😊
Brilliant to hear! They are solid cars for mileage!
Hello! This video has been pushed out the algorithm recently and thought I'd share a message since I am getting a lot more comments!. At the time of making this video, I was still new in the CZcams process learning how to make videos and although the information in this is true from what I sourced from the auto magazines, I have since updated this video with a PART 2 with more up to date information including Mercs and Volvos etc!
Hope you enjoy! Cheers.
Edit: Yes some Vauxhalls can do higher miles statistically due to more of them being made per volume. But some can still be questionable.
What no 530d or any straight 6 BMW diesel engine.also E-class Mercedes or any VAG diesel as well as skoda mentioned. I know of 2 , 530d BMW with over 200,000 miles infact 1 has done just over on its First mot recently. I also know of an 09 520d BMW that just this week it passed its MOT with just under 370,000 miles . What about the old S80 Volvo thats done over 700,000 doesn't Alex from Autoalex own it he did.
My 1999 Nissan Maxima 3 litre V6 is poor on MPG round town but is very economical on the open road. It has 257,000km on the clock and I have had a new radiator, starter motor (after market) and a new alternator spread over the 17 years I have owned it. As the second owner I have put 157,000 on the clock, and it still does 33+ MPG even with the aircon going on long trips. I use the recommended 95 octane, and service it religiously. It has failed its WoF (six monthly) twice, I damaged a rear light cluster, and the drivers seat belt needed replacing. It is a great car on the open road. My previous vehicle was a 2 litre Nissan Widetrack Bluebird, also a very reliable car and very economical five speed manual.
Those were the last good cars by Nissan.
My Mazda 6 made it to 170,000 then everything went wrong on her. Scrapped recently.
Jaysus,she died young!
honda civic 2002 and still going strong as new.change the oil and filter once a year, love my honda
Solid run abouts for sure!
Mondeos are expensive sheds past 120k. Astra...dont make me laugh.
My Volvo V50 Drive 2011, the one with the Peugeot engine has just passed 180k. Spend about £300 a year on service, tyres this that and the other. Drives great still does 50+ miles to the gallon on the motorway. Had a Focus 1.8 tdi that did 220k bodywork rotted before the engine gave up.
Exactly what happened to my 1.8tdi focus. Mine was an early X plated saloon with the tddi direct injection engine the only issue I ever had with it was the fuel pump failing but was easily fixed. Sadly the rest of the car just fell apart from the rust.
Er, what about the greatest of all ??? THE FECKING HONDA ACCORD!!
This bloke that did this video must pull his thumb...
Wheres any odometer evidence, total conjecture
Hmmm have an Octavia. Needed a new Nox sensor £450 + labour. Car is only 3 yrold. Depends how you drive them
Diesels.dont like shorts runs
True. It's all ultimately about how you drive and maintain
450 for a sensor,stealership servicing.
I know someone with a Scania P Series over 700k km, nothing breaks there.
Which years of Skoda Octavia is the most reliable?
Probably the mk2 so around 2005-2009
For all you motor heads ??? Im buying a car v soon for up and down the motorway to n frim work 50miles daily, I have 2 choices a 2019 golf 1.6d with under 50k miles or a 2016 audi a4 2.0d with 90k miles or more, what would ye chose ???
Defo would go for the golf
@shirleyelliott9848 I went for the Audi, delighted with it so far, golf is a great car but too small
If your ever looking for a car that will last you a lifetime ….just ask a uk city taxi driver …and the car they’ll suggest will probably be a older vag group tdi….I have a 20yr old ….6 owner…with no service history 2003 vw bora 1.9 tdi pd130…it has 265000 miles on it and it drives and pulls like a 60000 mile car unbelievable
Also Taxi cabs go forever!
@@CarsWithBenalso what people don’t know is…taxi cars work round the clock 24/7…when the day shift driver finishes his shift he literally gets out the car leaving it running and the night shift driver gets in it …the old pd tdi vag cars are the ultimate work horse
Vauxhall Astra... 500,000 miles ? You must live on another planet. Vauxhalls are disposable cars, and the old joke that the wheels fall off a Vauxhall that reaches 100,000 miles is very much a comment on their build and engineering quality. Same with most Fords too.
I get this comment a lot. Firstly, the video is a bit older and there is a new version my channel. Secondly, it's primarily based off the surveys and statistics of most likely to reach cars. There's tons of Vauxhall Astras therefore there have been cases of them reaching super high miles. Like I said, I made an updated video to this for vehicles that actually can reach it!
@@CarsWithBenI had to scrap a neglected Vauxhall at 126000 due to rust and manifold. Glow plugs were shot and it was still firing up at sub zero. It was my first car and did me well while I had it. Very powerful and cost peanuts to run. Underrated cars. Old Vectra 2.0 DTis were unkillable afaik. Slow chuggers but wouldn’t die. Only weekends was the fuel pumps afaik
I’ve gone full circle with cars. I used to think that German cars were superior in terms of reliability and engineering and French, British cars were a bit naff. Now I’m older and more experienced, I realise that a lot of the cheaper brands are actually really well made despite the cheaper appearance and extremely reliable but aren’t necessarily the fastest. I really despise a lot of German cars now. There are so many badly made models. I’m no longer a badge snob. I have heard some horror stories with newer TDI engines. Pretty much the entire vag group now I wouldn’t touch with a barge pole.
Not sure where you get your information mate but someone is pulling your plonker with the Astra at the end lol
Here's a question that comes to mind Ben, how many Gearboxes would a Vauxhall Astra go through to get to 500k miles??... 🤔🤔🤔
A few 😆
A few too many!.. 🙈
I have a Ford Galaxy with 187,000kms. Gonna try get it to 250,000kms. Shouldn’t be a problem. Been really reliable so far.
Can't fault Fords, always have high mileage!
@@CarsWithBen yeah I’ve had issues with three VW’s, regulators, dpf’s, electrical. But nothing with the fords I’ve owned outside of the normal wear and tear.
Early versions were VW 1.9 TDI powered.
Saw an MX5 with 600k miles and a peugeot partner with 550k miles
Peugeots are really great for high mileage!
@@CarsWithBen Yes, it was a 2015 taxi lol. They age very well. And the Mx5 was flawless. There is 2 MK4 golfs near me. A 2003 with 300k and a 2001 with 525k that was in the news.
@@CarsWithBen I was a taxi driver for nearly 20 years, I managed 451,000 miles in Peugeot 406 with a 1.9 XUD Diesel engine. Broke timing belt at 150,000, engine was repaired and the only thing that killed it just before it’s 8th year of working was a broken rear arm just before the PSV expired. My boss then retired it, just before it turned 19 years old, and replaced it with a 406 with a 2.0 HDI that had 200K on the clock. The XUD engined 406 was bought with 118,000 miles on the clock, and was 10 years old at the time, and led a tough life towing cattle. There was 300,000 approx miles on the original clutch when it eventually expired. Great cars!
@@grantmarshall3026 Really fair point Grant! People often forget Peugeots can cover a lot of miles especially back in the day!
Can you do one about vans
Interesting! I certainly can give it a go
I had a Mercedes 124 series 300D with 550 000 on the clock and gave it away with a full years MOT on it to make space for my new Van, it still ran like clockwork but it was starting to suffer from mainly cosmetic rust. I think I would have a Mercedes on the list over a Ford or Opel
I absolutely love bmw's but there's no way I'm going to own one in the next couple of years so to be realistic with myself its cars like this that I need to be looking for. All I want is for it to start firet time every time and not keep costing me more than fuel money (I don't think thats too much to ask for personally)🤷🏼♂️😏
BMW,overrated.
I'd replace the Ford and Vauxhall with any 1980s Audi 5 cylinder petrol engine or Volvo from that era. Bonus corrosion resistance and build quality!
astras can't really make it past 180k. nor mondeos. turbo rebuilds aren't worth it for these types because by then the cars lost value
Agreed, not seen many Astra past that but some vauxhalls can! Also this is based of the statistics of all vehicles combined.
Astras and mondeos are good for 150k but then with expensive repairs they can go on further

Some people don’t like diesels but, “Skoda have a very good way of looking after their cars”…..what?
Im a member of the mileage impossible group on facebook. You wouldnt believe the shitboxes that 750k plus miles. I saw a dacia sandero 1.5 DCI with nearly 800k miles infact theres loads of them. Any Ford, no. That Ecoboost engine is a disaster with disintegrating wet cam belt and head gasket failures. And no mention of any Honda with the amazing ivtec engine. I don't think Vauxhall are that reliable either. Just my opinions though and what do I know! But thanks for the video.
Never own anything with those ford ecobang engines.

Apart from the Skoda. Absolute bollox.
The early 2000s Clio might last this long they are very light and have large engines for the size of car, the less the engine has to strain, the chances of it lasting a long time are bigger
Only issues with that shape of Clio is the location of the fuse box in the engine compartment. It's right near the wheel well and gets soaked in heavy rain. everything you said is invalid, you included an astra as one of th most reliable engines...
It's according to the surveys and statistics of cars that typically do more than others on average. I know not every Astra will be great.

Hi Peter, since making this video, I've changed a lot as a creator and now make sure to tell all the facts correctly. So this might have been a rougher video but it was a platform to learn from. Hope you can appreciate
Lol nonsense about Skoda. That's just good marketing which has tried to paint them as solid cars. They are essentially a VW and Audi. If someone says Skoda are reliable but not those they don't know anything about cars. Audi and VW aren't great for reliability therefore Skoda are no better. The diesels in all can get high mileages with plenty of care yes, but plenty of other problems.
Disagree, Skoda are always doing super high mileage, thats why they are used as Taxi's. This was based of a survey and statistic when making this video though so sometimes it might not reflect every brand.
@@CarsWithBen well in that case you must also claim that Audi/VW/Seat are the same as they are virtually identical cars with same engines and transmissions. Skoda are just cheaper as they have cheaper trim which is why taxi drivers go for them.

@@TFSIChristmas what are you on about? A Skoda literally has the same engine and transmission as an Audi.
Any car should make 500k miles? 😂 What an absurd thing to say. The vast majority won't because it's uneconomical to fix them. Any car will if you replace the engine, transmission, electric, rusted panels. A bit like the Only Fools and Horses Trigger quote of an old broom having the head and shaft replaced many times. They don't make 500k miles because putting a replacement 5k engine in to a car worth 2k isn't going to happen. Virtually no cars make 500k for this reason, even with good maintenance.
Ford and Vauxhall's nahhh no Suzuki's or hondas then hmmmm.😅
Updated this as this video is 2 years old now with a new video on my channel!
@@CarsWithBen fair enough mate.
Mondeo to last for 500k ! ???
Only if done in his first 5 years of life as later rust will take him for parts only 😂
That is true 😆
@@CarsWithBen The thing about the Astra is, that it does not rot like many Japanese models, so while they have been soldiering on mechanically with no issues, it is structural rot at the MOT that finishes them off.
You have to check again, I agree for Skoda, but 150-200k miles is nothing, almost all bmw can go there, and do I have to mention Mercedes Benz, what about E190, and specialty the one and only W210 - they are called - Millionaires in Europe, so please - do your homework …
I agree, there's probably a lot of cars I could've done but in the interest of time, I wanted to keep it to 5 cars! Maybe I'll make a part 2...
I'm just about to pass 100,000 miles in my Aygo... Still running as well as the day I bought it and has a rust free chassis. I did put a layer of waxoyl underbody seal on though to hopefully prevent any starting. The most I've ever seen on an Aygo is 256,000 miles.
No Volvos I’m gutted
To be fair I think they deserve a whole video on just Volvos!
No Volvos, try again son.
Don't you know number 1 engine manufacturer in the world ?
Its Honda
Honda and Toyotas seem to be the best engines. Done bangernomics for 35 years and the Japanese cars are the most reliable / trouble free.
The two fiats (Uno & Punto) were the worst for reliability even at 50,000 miles.
What a load of shit. turned off after the Skoda, the oil impeller pump?
It's all according to automags 🤣
You don’t know what you’re talking about
Sources were taken from magazine information but I have updated this video now
