I just searched CZcams for hedge weaving and all sorts of videos popped up... Videos on laying live hedges and weaving dead branches to keep stock at bay. Yes, you can keep buying fencing, but this is free. And you can do it now, (a section at a time) when you aren't as busy with the market garden and farmers' markets. And it would look so cool to see on your farm tours. Once you got good at it, you could give workshops and let students lay or weave your hedge! ... Like you said, nothing ventured, nothing gained. And if you mess up, it will grow back and replacements are easy to start from cuttings. Plus being busy outside, will keep the blues away.💖🌞🌵😷
True ... and I'm likely to mess it up the first few times! Good idea to do some outdoor jobs and bend the hedging a bit to my willing.
@@BrimwoodFarm , yes, I'd mess up a few times as well, that's why I added the bit about it easily growing back. And I want you to stay cheerful on these dreary days. Sheep in the garden is a constant battle and this is something free you can do to help (empowering). 💖🌞🌵😷
@@BrimwoodFarmIt doesn’t really matter if you mess up, on the most part hedges are pretty determined to grow 😂 we did a section this year. What i would say is get a really decent bill hook and a nice little axe and a decent pair of gloves before you start or you will hate life 😂
Ha. Thanks for the tips. I just strolled up to the poly and noticed there are several quite large branches at head height. I'm thinking I can lay this diagonally down to plug gaps. Quite excited!
@@BrimwoodFarm did you know that a laid hedge row will support over 60 bird and 20 different mammal species, besides the many insects and plants? Just the thing you've been wanting. And that each region has hedge laying societies? (Sorry, I've been watching videos. I'll stop now.) 💖🌞🌵😷
It good to set up your spare room to over winter plants, but turn on a little fan to low to keep the air circulating and the mealy bugs at bay. 💖🌞🌵😷
Doing a fantastic job, a well-deserved cup of tea,
Nothing better than a brew!
I missed the farm tours! So exciting that living on site is already helping
It's helping immensely. There's not a great amount to show at the moment, other than mud! But I can but try. :D
Exciting to see the market garden wake up for the new year! Satisfying to see those wispy onions being planted knowing they'll end up nice and round spring onions.
It is rather satisfying knowing there's SOMETHING in the ground and upon those warmer, longer days, they'll begin to grow ♥️
Hey Geoff. Great stuff, using the poly tunnel over winter to get yourself ahead for the new growing season.
Great that you are trying to salvage the peppers and aubergine. Hopefully they will survive.
Thanks for this Geoff. 🤓🐶🧔
Fingers crossed, Johnny!
Here's hoping for you. 🤓🐶🧔@@BrimwoodFarm
Love it that it feels like a holiday for you with the caravan there at last. You could try a clump of Sorrell in the poly tunnel. It can do well all thru' Winter.
Good idea! I grew some red-veined sorrel a few years back and it was great!
You’ve inspired me to start sowing and planting for spring. Thank you🌹🌸🌼 🙏🏾
Good luck!
It’s good to utilise the poly over winter, 👏👏👏,,
I have modules of spring onions just ticking over in the pots that the tomatoes grew in,, so good to be able to eat them fresh in April + May,, I also dug up some chrysanthemum plants which are over wintering in the greenhouse ,, nice to be able to take cuttings from them when they start sprouting in the spring ,, so easy to take cutting from and they have a good strike rate,,
if you can put some guttering in the roof of your poly where the mice can’t get to, then it’s a good time to get an early start with your sweet peas,, best wishes, Lisa
Yes! I always forget to start sweet peas. Must get my broad beans, garlic and onions in too; though I normally do them in January and it works well.
@@BrimwoodFarm with the ground being so wet you don’t want them rotting off in the ground ,, I suppose you could pop a few of each in the poly before January to get an earlier harvest ,, I’ve just about come to an end of my stored onions ,, oh my word, it’s going to be terrible day when I have to buy them from the supermarket 🤣,, keep up the great work Geoff,,
Woah it's so weird seeing anything green! Here in Norway we're covered in snow. Hope the polytunnel will be safe for your plants! :D
I love snow but not sure I could handle it non-stop for many months!
Polytunnel looks great. Good luck with the peppers will be interesting to see how they do.
I'm interested to see if I can salvage any. I don't have high hopes but we'll see!
Hey friend
Hey 👋🏻
Voles and other rodents may try eating the daffodils, but those are toxic to them. If there's an area where you need to keep the voles away, plant daffodils.
I had a pepper plant doing fairly well, then it dropped the leaves, so I am trying to baby it for the next spring.
To keep the weeding down, put a lot of dried grasses as a mulch over the beds. Double benefit, they'll dry out the water and keep the soil a bit warmer while weeds won't be able to get going.
Good luck with pepper. Mine DEFINITELY need some babying!
With all that standing water, can you amend it so the water runs off or is absorbed more easily? 💖🌞🌵😷
I need to do more soil amendment. We've just had horrendous rainfall here with flooding alerts across the whole region; the soil is totally saturated!
@@BrimwoodFarm so? When is the best time of year to do soil amendments? 💖🌞🌵😷
@suzisaintjames when it's dried out some. At this stage I'd just be turning the soil to mud. So early spring I suspect
@@BrimwoodFarm right before planting? Mark your calendar! 💖🌞🌵😷
Just sew a load more peppers. Why make work for yourself?
Totally get that ... glutton for punishment? I just want to see if I can extend the season a bit; would be good to have some early peppers.
I chucked all of mine on the compost heap before I knew you could overwinter them, but they took SO long to ripen this year I guess you’ll have a big advantage there if they stay alive and much earlier fruits
