The War song…released in 1984 when I was a high school student who loved western music and Culture Club was(is) my favorite one…used to listen to the radio, watch the MTV as well. It's been almost 40 years since then and the song come to my head in the situation that is actually on going…pray for peace.
It's amazing that way back in the early 80's people just accepted Boy George for who he was. Nowadays Fox "News" crowd would be hating on him because he is who he is.
This video from so long ago is SO PROPHETIC!! Clothing of war as "fashion" ... and here we are all these years later wearing camouflage t-shirts and skulls and army fatigues. Designer deathwear. The skeleton children is what really did it for me! Boy George really was profound. Pray for PEACE on Earth in Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, U.S., all humans- everywhere.🙏
Prophetic? War has always been a thing since man has walked the Earth. During the time this song came out, there were conflicts, including The Troubles in Ireland, and the resulting b0mbings in England, The Falklands War, and the Iran-Iraq War. I was born in 1972, and so I was a child/teen of the 80s. I remember these well. They were discussed on the news. America had a strong President who prevented the escalation of tensions and immediately answered threats. The same was true of 2016- 2020. This was why the U.S. wasn't involved in a lot of conflicts during those times, although there were still issues with Lebanon back in the 80s. It was dealt with swiftly, and the issue was resolved. Singing about war isn't prophetic or profound. It's simply singing about life.
The 1980's when I was a teenager was great, especially for music. Today's just isn't the same, a generation thing I suppose, like comparing Big Band of my Grandparents, to the 1960's Beatles, Stones, etc of my parents. I miss the 1980's so much.
Culture Club does have 8 Top 40 songs, and they are: Do You Really Want To Hurt Me? Did peaked at number 2 in 1983, Time (Clock Of The Heart also reached to number 2 in 1983, I’ll Tumble 4 Ya reached to number 9 in 1983, Church Of The Poison Mind reached to number 10 in late 1983, Karma Chameleon was the only chart topper for 4 weeks for number 1 in 1984, Miss Me Blind peaked at number 3 in 1984, It’s A Miracle peaked at number 12 in 1984, and the last and this one, The War Song reached to number 8 in 1984.
I think Miss Me Blind hit number 5 while The War Song was only 18. Church of the Poison Mind could’ve been higher and was still climbing the charts when they decided to release Karma Chameleon because it became a huge hit in the UK.
I saw Culture Club in concert 2 years ago at the Santa Barbara Bowl in California. Beautiful outdoor venue, holds 4500, and it sold out. And I must say, I was blown away by how good they were. There were actually about a dozen or so musicians on stage, brass, percussion, backup singers, the works, and boy they were tight, professional and having fun. They did some awesome jazz as well as their hits, of course. And Boy George was an absolute delight, a real class act, very personable (and funny) when talking with the audience between songs. I was really impressed, and have a whole new respect for how professional and talented this man is. And now that I think of it, they did not play "War"
Culture Club were huge. This is near the point where the band imploded lead by George. Never to recover. Nice to see George and the rest of the guys going well and having seemingly conquered most of their demons and also still belting out some fine live performances.
CC came back to some degree with "Move Away." But this song and album were rushed. Who knows what they would have created if they'd had a few months after their tour to recharge.
They were amazing but George became an ass of a person. I'll never forget when he performed on South Beach at Salvation - we bought tickets in advance - to hear him sing. She fancied herself a DJ, though, and refused to sing and was nasty about it. Heroin and Meth change people's personalities - not for the better.

The reason this song was given flack aside from after two years of constantly being in the press thus an inevitable backlash was due was becuz it was a song about WAR...a serious topic and unlike other songs of war, it was poppy and the lyrics brutally honest in their simplicity. I think it's a really underrated song. And the lyrics in the verses are much deeper and thoughtful than the seemingly blithe chorus. Really good catchy song. Love the video. Soo 1984

yep he's got immense talent and nowadays the whole gay thing is so second hand it doesn't detract from this video. Sadly, in 1984 it was still relatively shocking to see this man dressed as a woman and the novelty was a distraction but also sold records. Listening now the talent and depth of the lyrics as well as the probable underlying metaphor (his love/hate for his band mate) is evident also. I was a fan, even as a white heterosexual male I recognize the talent that endures. He would sell records today. Bieber won't in 30 years.

I am shocked by the fact that: 1. I've discovered this masterpiece only now, in 2018 and; 2. This song has never been so current.
I'm 13 but this song is so good lmao. My mom listened to culture club in the car when I was little, and I was hooked! She gave me her CD a while ago, and I will admit that I pop it in every now and then to jam out to some Boy George 😁👌🏻
I'm 49 and today just felt like listening/watching it again after a long, long time and WOW! Still so fresh and powerful as when I first heard it (and I was 12 In 1984). Can you believe that I was totally oblivious to the 'gay' concept at that time and thought he just had this 'dress up as a girl' style which was both odd and cool? But that's irrelevant, anyway. Great song.

Saw Boy George and Culture Club in concert last night and had totally forgotten about this song until they played it. The song was a tad slower, more of a reggae beat and just as relevant today as it was in 1984.

For me it's one of the best videos ever. Signed by the director Russel Mulcahy, in 1984. It's an incredible reunion of music, fashion, cinema and poetry (yes, poetry! Simple words can make good poetry)
Admittedly I may have missed the point you were originally making. My contention is that these cynical _peaceniks_ secretly want war. Their way of life depends on it.
Lyrics: War, war is stupid and people are stupid And love means nothing in some strange quarters War, war is stupid and people are stupid And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers War People fill the world with narrow confidence Like a child at birth, a man with no defence What's mine's my own, I won't give it to you No matter what you say, no matter what you do Now we're fighting in our hearts Fighting in the streets Won't somebody help me? War, war is stupid and people are stupid And love means nothing in some strange quarters War, war is stupid and people are stupid And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers War Man is far behind in the search of something new Like a philistine, we're burning witches too This world of hate must be designed for you It matters what you say, it matters what you do Now we're fighting in our hearts Fighting in the streets Won't somebody help me? War, war is stupid and people are stupid And love means nothing in some strange quarters War, war is stupid and people are stupid And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers War, war war After the bird has flown He walked ten thousand miles back home You can't do that to me, no, you can't do that to me You can't do that to me, no, you can't do that to me War, war In this heart of mine, I'll find a place for you For black or white, for grown-up children too Now we're fighting in our hearts Fighting in the streets Won't somebody help me? War, war is stupid and people are stupid And love means nothing in some strange quarters War, war is stupid and people are stupid And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers No more war Say no more war Say war I said woah, said no more war, said no more war, said woah Said no more war, I said no more war Senso hant-ai Senso hant-ai Say no more war Say no more, no more war, said no more war Said no more war, said no more war, oh

Ever since the war in Ukraine started, this song has stuck in my head. I’d rather that song reminds me of some past wars and that there will never be new wars again.
@@beingsshepherd Since about 30 years ago, there was a war in my country (Croatia) and it's not about who is at war and where, because every war is bull$hit. Why I mentioned Ukraine is because I hoped that people might be smarter in the 21st century, but unfortunately history always repeats itself. 😕
But Afghanistan was also invaded this side of the millennium (2001), as was Iraq (2003); not to mention Syria and Yemen. I'm wondering why Ukraine eclipses the lot? Because it's white people this time? 🤔
I am very lucky to have spent 24 hours with BG. Also a signed poster of the boy. When he was in a Dj in 2002 Valentine's Day spinning for a 3 Jr set at RA nightclub in the Luxor Hotel Sin City. I was the VIP host. I took care of the boy's needs. First time in my Vegas career of Celebs. Where I was so struck it hurt. He was the voice of our MTV generation. Kept composure and marched on. And at the end I have a piece of my childhood hanging on the wall.
This is by far, without a doubt, the MOST appropriate song BY FAR of 2020. War IS stupid. People are DEFINITELY stupid. And love... Don't get me started. Will be listening to this alot.

This song is more relevant now than ever. Almost. Radio stations should start playing this now
I am afraid it is relevant in pretty much all past, present and future times of human history.

I loved it on release, and it's been coming back to me over and over lately.
@@chloeleighhardy3435 Never 2late. This is one of my favorite songs from my childhood.
The background singer on this song.. Hitting those notes.

I'm 13 but this song is so good lmao. My mom listened to culture club in the car when I was little, and I was hooked! She gave me her CD a while ago, and I will admit that I pop it in every now and then to jam out to some Boy George 😁👌🏻
Hi. Yah I'm no 80s kid either I was born in 91 but I'm glad I discovered this group too
I'm 49 and today just felt like listening/watching it again after a long, long time and WOW! Still so fresh and powerful as when I first heard it (and I was 12 In 1984). Can you believe that I was totally oblivious to the 'gay' concept at that time and thought he just had this 'dress up as a girl' style which was both odd and cool? But that's irrelevant, anyway. Great song.
Musicão tôp clássico de 84 🔊 da melhor qualidade tenho 39 anos e até hoje curto essas músicas. Músicas assim ficam marcadas eternamente em nossas memórias. 💯🌟💢🙏🏽🇧🇷🎼🖤
80'S WERE SO KOOL. I MISS THEM.
Soy de Portugal,50 años y culture club fueron inmensos...boy George merece más reconocimiento..viví esta canción en plena adolescencia y que bueno es recordar lo que fuimos.❤❤❤
A GREAT, GREAT SONG. IT IS A SHAME THAT TODAY'S SONGS ARE NOT LIKE THIS.
I agree
It was great seeing George appropriating Situationist theory
You got that right!
Когда я был малым в Советском Союзе, в 86-м случайно по Польскому телевидению увидел этот клип. Я охренел. По сравнению с нашей унылой попсой это были люди с другой планеты. Браво маэстро!!!
The trollololol song is good
1984... Oh yes...I remember as a teenager this great Boy George and Culture Club made us still have hopes of a better world... Love always
Exactly
Saw Boy George and Culture Club in concert last night and had totally forgotten about this song until they played it.
The song was a tad slower, more of a reggae beat and just as relevant today as it was in 1984.
I have been singing this song all week!
Boy George's hair is da bomb.
+mjloverforever jackson Boy George is da bomb!
+Ray Walker he is gay??? No!!!!! No shit sherlock!
Boy George is so NOT Gay,he got the best looking Girl throughout his life,he was so much laughing at people calling him Gay !
agreed
+Vlad IV-Jedi-PrinceofRomania77 yes and he went to prison for falsely imprisoning a gay prostitute. I think we can safely say he is gay. Nothing wrong with being gay!
One of culture clubs best songs along mister man and stormkeeper
For me it's one of the best videos ever. Signed by the director Russel Mulcahy, in 1984. It's an incredible reunion of music, fashion, cinema and poetry (yes, poetry! Simple words can make good poetry)
80's forever and ever ....
Rock argentino también es bueno
😎😍💙
Oh yes! The musical years 70 , 80 , and even 90 were the best years for this king of music. It s really poor now.
George, give them your message!
世界中で流せばいいよ、この曲を。
It's sad praying for the people of Ukraine. I love this song as a child because war doesn't make sense. Love Boy George, thanks for this song.
@Simone Morgan I hope you are 'praying' for the people of the Donbass who have been shelled and killed by the Ukraine Nazi regime since 2014.
You might pray for the people of Russia, gravely threatened by Washington's control of Ukraine as a lethal proxy.
powerful message with an exciting rhythm ... too bad the world doesn't dance to the beat of this drum
those amazing Clare Torry vocals at 1:58. chills!
I guess you mean Helen Terry?
@@boymariano at least he was right that she is a singer
Nice "feelgood" song, we need more like this in these troubled times
Why? What good do they do?
People still thank Viet-Nam vets for "their service".
Admittedly I may have missed the point you were originally making.
My contention is that these cynical _peaceniks_ secretly want war.
Their way of life depends on it.
カルチャークラブの中で一番好きな曲!!戦争反対をポップに歌って伝える...カルチャークラブならではの雰囲気が大好きです!

Lyrics:
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And love means nothing in some strange quarters
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers
War
People fill the world with narrow confidence
Like a child at birth, a man with no defence
What's mine's my own, I won't give it to you
No matter what you say, no matter what you do
Now we're fighting in our hearts
Fighting in the streets
Won't somebody help me?
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And love means nothing in some strange quarters
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers
War
Man is far behind in the search of something new
Like a philistine, we're burning witches too
This world of hate must be designed for you
It matters what you say, it matters what you do
Now we're fighting in our hearts
Fighting in the streets
Won't somebody help me?
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And love means nothing in some strange quarters
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers
War, war war
After the bird has flown
He walked ten thousand miles back home
You can't do that to me, no, you can't do that to me
You can't do that to me, no, you can't do that to me
War, war
In this heart of mine, I'll find a place for you
For black or white, for grown-up children too
Now we're fighting in our hearts
Fighting in the streets
Won't somebody help me?
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And love means nothing in some strange quarters
War, war is stupid and people are stupid
And I heard them banging on hearts and fingers
No more war
Say no more war
Say war
I said woah, said no more war, said no more war, said woah
Said no more war, I said no more war
Senso hant-ai
Senso hant-ai
Say no more war
Say no more, no more war, said no more war
Said no more war, said no more war, oh
I just came back from a Culture Club concert. He sang this. Just fantastic.
This was my favourite song as a young UN still love boy George to this day
2023 anybody?
ロシアのウクライナ侵攻でこの曲を思い出した。
戦争反対!!
Cuture Club for ever !!!! Great song, they nailed it again !!!! Hugs from Belgium !!!
I remember listening to every one of boy George songs when I discovered him in 2008 I was 8 years old I am now 22 and this song still makes me happy as hell
Ever since the war in Ukraine started, this song has stuck in my head. I’d rather that song reminds me of some past wars and that there will never be new wars again.
Do you think of this song during 20 years of U.S.-led Afghan carnage?
Or is your circle of compassion determined by news headlines?
@@beingsshepherd Since about 30 years ago, there was a war in my country (Croatia) and it's not about who is at war and where, because every war is bull$hit. Why I mentioned Ukraine is because I hoped that people might be smarter in the 21st century, but unfortunately history always repeats itself. 😕
But Afghanistan was also invaded this side of the millennium (2001), as was Iraq (2003); not to mention Syria and Yemen.
I'm wondering why Ukraine eclipses the lot?
Because it's white people this time? 🤔
@@beingsshepherd No, it has nothing to do with it, simply because it is the last war that started. I'm not a racist.
Another masterpiece from 80s to eternity, thanks George 😁✌❤
I grew up with culture club music and now my 25 year old daughter loves culture club im proud to have 1 of my kids loving them too
Culture Club will be making so much more money right now because of this song!
Probably not.
The boy was fabulous. It was the big 80's.
Great cc song from 84 I love those times
Still sounds good. ;-) ;-) ;-)
戦争反対!! 今こそこの歌を…
Estava há tanto tempo, procurando essa música, finalmente encontrei. Grande anos 80.😍😍😍
No more war .
This music video rocks! One of the best of the 80s! My fav part is the fashion runway scene!
This is by far, without a doubt, the MOST appropriate song BY FAR of 2020.
War IS stupid.
People are DEFINITELY stupid.
And love... Don't get me started.
Will be listening to this alot.
Still my fave Culture Club song - love this!
Culture Club IS awesome as always.
That's what we need these days.
Play it to the "hero" troops!
2021 still loving this song
Me too ❤
One of the most beautiful songs ever made!
When this song came out, we thought it was kind liked a patronizing song .(Even Boy George thought so.)
And now this song has become a reality. I
I am keenly aware that had been conceited was us
Great song with Claire Torry belting out some dope vocals as backup.
