    I was in the Army in Germany and they have a big problem with folks burning non-taxed fuel (for heating) in cars. About half the cars there are diesel and they don't even have to dip the tank to look for pink. They have a paper that works kind of like litmus paper, they spray the paper and hold it by your exhaust pipe.

    The idea is that farmers shouldn't pay tax for fuel used in the fields to pay for the roads. Using the road is a necessary but unavoidable burden to move equipment to tend to the fields.

    Here in Australia everyone gets taxed on fuel and it doesn't matter if it is a road use or a generator. I use the same diesel in a generator that i get for the 4X4 at the same fuel pump when i fill the fuel tank up and the 20 liter jerry cans here in Australia.

    • @macsrule94
      @macsrule94 Před 7 lety

      In the US there is a tax on fuel (gas/diesel) to pay for roads, road tax, although most of it generally gets spent on something other than roads by politicians. The dyed fuel doesn't have road tax on it. There is also a sales tax included in the price, dyed is not road taxed but can be sales taxed unless a farmer has an exemption. Anyone can use dyed diesel that has sales tax on it

      A number of years ago in Texas, farmers were to record when they were using public roads with off road equipment. Then pay the taxes for that use but it never was fully implemented. With propane we paid by the miles we drove each year to buy non taxed propane. I am sure that we burn a lot more taxed fuel on private roads.

    The UK has Red Diesel for off road, agriculture and all boating use. The EU came in with rules that private boater must use White road diesel and thus pay the tax. But boat yards refused to sell it because they would have to by now pumps, because they would have to buy new pumps and tanks as its impossible to get the red dye out of the system. The UK came up with a tax scheme that allowed the boat yards to keep selling Red diesel but 75% of the sale would be taxed the remaining 25% would not be taxed. This would be classed as heating or generator fuel and thus would be zero rated. This worked fine in the UK but travelling to the EU resulted in huge customs fines even though boater produced tax recipes' for the red diesel. Tax calculations were made on the size of the tank not the fuel they contained. Even if the boater crossed the channel with very little fuel, a very bad sailing practice. It took a lot of UK Government intervention to get it sorted out, in the mean time a lot of boaters cancelled trips to the EU this of course showed in tourist revenue. BS

      For the first 8 yrs employed as a #2 Pumper at ConocoPhillips Refinery; I have sampled a lot of different fuels. This is not heating oil. Heating oil used in older oil fired furnaces about the same color and thickness of molasses. It usually the heaviest oil cut from the catilytic cracking unit and is known to refinery employees as #10 bunker fuel. Now days the refinery here doesn't even sell it as heating fuel. It is either loaded into rail tank cars and shipped to carbon fiber plants as "Carbon Black Oil" or it is burned in plant to fire the older boilers that are still in use since they have a permit still (newer boliers all use natural gas) Contrary to the statement in this video; red dyed diesel and road diesel(aka #2 diesel) have exact same sulpher content. It comes from the same storge tanks. The delivery driver pours the red dye into the semi trailer compartment through a hatch on top before filling with diesel. As stated the red dyed fuel is tax free. That is because farm implement and construction equipment are not primary users of federaly funded highways making them excempt from the US Federal Highway Motor Tax that funds the highway's maintenance. Diesel semis and pickups are expected to use highways highways primarily and must buy non dyed fuel to indicate that they are making their contribution to to the maintenance of the maintained roads. Non dyed diesel is sampled every 4hrs and when looked at through a 1 quart clear glass sample bottle(standard size and color of bottle) it is a light yellow. The yellow tint is caused by the sulpher. Kerosene is damn near sulpher free and looks like moonshine in a bottle. In the winter diesel pour point parameters are changed to lower the temp it gels at by removing more paraffin wax. This is what you buy at the normal pump. In climates with extreme cold weather the is usually a pump labeled winter(or something similar) or #1. "Winter" is usually #2 diesel cut with #1 diesel aka Kerosene and a pump labeled #1 should be just that.The only other fuel that contains an actual dye additive is 100LL(Low Lead) Aviation Fuel aka Avgas. It is dyed blue and has a federaly mandated color range. Because of the mandate; dye is added by the #2 pumper during blending so that a sample taken after the blend is done can be tested and certified in the lab.. Avgas is not the same as Jet Fuel. Jet Fuel (usually called Jet A 1)is actually kerosene with additives to minimize a jet's black exhaust smoke and gelling at altitude and thus no more volatile. JP-4 is Millitary Jet Fuel and has some volatile blend stocks used in gasoline added to it.

    • @jamesbutcher2578
      @jamesbutcher2578 Před 8 lety

      To add to this the non taxed fuel only looks pink while it is foamy. Once the foam is gone it is obviously red. When the Fed Law changed and we went ULSD in our plant; a rrumor also circulated that red dyed fuel was no longer tax free. To receive the tax exemption; contruction ompanies and farmers/ranchers had to keep receipts and turn them in when filing their income tax reports for a refund.

    • @billsmith5385
      @billsmith5385 Před 8 lety +2

      You may have used a heavier fuel oil working in the plant as a heating oil, However, Home heating oil is nothing more than #2 diesel. I spent 22 or so years hauling fuel from terminals to gas stations and small oil companies, the home heating oil comes from the same tank as a load of #2 diesel. This is the same as hauling jet fuel to the airport, we load Jet A out of the same tank as the #1 diesel fuel (Kerosene). The airport may add additives but that is done at the airport. In the winter (here in Ohio) we will blend 10% and 20% diesel and kerosene (90% diesel and 10% kero) for the winter blends depending on temps and customer order. As a side note, note all off road diesel is dyed, just that that is available for sale or available to the public, for example the railroads use off road diesel and we never blended it dye ( this is note to say they never have dyed fuel, we just had 2 trucks that only hauled railroad fuel, about 1,000,000 a month and it did not get dyed). oh how I long for the good ole days.

      never heard of light blue - our diesel is green year round - slightly lighter green for the winter mix when they put a bit of heating oil in with it

    Yah our Diesel fuel around here is dyed Red for offroad fuel, can not be ran in ANY on-road diesel equipment. If we are caught with offroad its your ass. Ive put offroad in my duramax once without knowing it because i pumped from the wrong fuel storage tank on the farm land. me and highschool buddy run a small animal farm, 32 goats, 5 head of cattle, 3 pigs, but its on a 60 acre plot, with 3 john deere tractors, a bobcat excavator and an Actual Bobcat bobcat, the equipment is used for landscaping and lawn clearing jobs, we have a full service lawn care business. But my point is, even having 2 acres with 2 goats makes your tax's alot more profitable, you open up so much more to be written off, bought a brand new 2016 electric golf cart? WRITE OFF for nearly 80% return, bought a a new duramax as farm truck? WRITE OFF. guys go get a farm. or atleast go buy 2 hens and put them in a cage outside. WRITE IT ALL OFF

      @TheGhostOfLuciasClay Před 7 lety

      you better check into what you can write off its something like 80% of your gross income has to be from farming to be tax exempt a hobby farm is not and like your truck if its used in your landscape business too you write a portion of expenses off both based on percentage of use

    • @yourfavoritelawnguy2722
      @yourfavoritelawnguy2722 Před 7 lety

      With the landscaping business well over 80% of its income in cash and is not "claimed" and you are right about it must be a certain percent to be tax exempt, which we arn't but im not sure of its actual percentage of our income, i take my accountant my books every year, she asks what new items i have bought at all anything from supplies to a mack truck, she finds out a way to write off what she can for the close to the most percent she can, i dont have her try to rob the IRS or lie on the tax return, anything listed was actually purchased and used for the 3 business's total.
      the farm, the lawncare business, the landclearing also.

      @TheGhostOfLuciasClay Před 7 lety

      +Zachary Redmon I'm didn't mean to imply you were robbing the IRS their crooks anyhow screw them all you can I was just saying to claim somethings you can claim depends on the majority where your income comes from. your accountant seems to know what to do for you . good luck

      oh no i wasnt gettin defensive i was just agreeing in most ways, and i forsure dont know hardly any of the tax laws or actual write offs, i just know what the accountant tells me was done at the end of the filing process each year.
