Thanks for taking the time to show how to operate a 4020. As far as I
am concerned the 4020 can be used today for important farm work-forage harvesting, filling silo, you name it. Hope to see you do more farm videos as time goes on.
The clutch releases the transmission from the engine and allows you to shift gears. Also, when starting the tractor, it is a very good idea to push the clutch in to prevent any accidental movement, which can be caused by anything. That little foot pedal under the brakes is the booster. you press that if you need a boost, but this does not replace traction lock when in the fields. Grew up with a 4020 and a 4000. Beautiful tractors! Easy to drive and quite handy for almost any farm job requiring a tractor.

That's is my favorite model of older John deere tractors. I love the look.
The first vehicle I ever drove by myself was my grandpa's JD 4020 at the age of eight. My task was to rake a field of straw. Pretty sure it never made it out of 3rd gear and it took me a whole day to rake 20 acres. But boy was it fun and a day I will never forget. My mom still thinks I was 10 when when I started driving grandpa's tractors.
I was eight or nine when I first started running it. From 6th grade on, I usually was guaranteed missing at least one day of school, in both the spring and fall, in order to help Dad farm the one field we had on the Northern county line. It took at least 2 hours to drive a piece of equipment there, and I was an extra hand to help get it done as quickly as possible.
I also have a CZcams account but I do magic tricks. But my grandparents own a farm in Ladysmith Wisconsin. Next time I go there I'm going to take a video because when I grow up I want to be a farmer. I also love your videos. I learn a lot keep up the good work.

MajSolo Ahaaaaaaaaa is that why tractors with their front wheels high in the air can turn 90 degree at an intersection when pulling tons of hay. Yeah differential breaking can come in handy :)

Always best to start with the basics. That said, I can see why you enjoy the 8235R as much as you do.
Us to here in Texas. You are right about the experience of driving from an early age. I've been driving ever since I was 3-5 and graduated from a go-kart to a John deere 212 garden tractor then to a 1995 Ford f250 XLT Turbo Diesel and have driven many ATV's including golf carts. Over time I have learned to backup a good size flatbed trailer. So it's better to learn on something smaller so if you crash it's not as big of a deal. Yes there are many things I did not say in this comment that should be in here.

The tractor I first started on was a IH 656, gas, wide front. First job I ever did with it was running the 3 point mower over the sweet corn patch after the season was over. Spent several springs running a 15' rotary hoe with it too.
I learnt to drive a tractor in a zetor. It was old and rickety but was fun! Here in the UK manual cars are almost everywhere automatics are rare ish! So this wasn't to much of a shock but learning early is certainly better than late!
Our 4020 had a powershift transmission and you had to press the clutch in order to start the engine. It also had an accelerator pedal, as most tractors now have.
I have NO DOUBT! ;-) My Neighbor has a tractor. Actually a few tractors. I may be inspired to ask for a lesson. I should see them at the auction later today. (Thats what we do on Saturdays here.)

Same tractor i learned on only open station. Gets hot and dusty planting corn on it. Good tractor for bucking wagons back and forth.
I was allowed to drive a Case tractor when I was 12 or 13.
I started driving a lawnmower when I was 8, a 1986 MTD even. I have driven manual transmission, no power steering lawnmowers all my life and they are pretty simple , I sure won't get into a tractor accident, I got between a trailer and a tree with a lawnmower once.
The 40 20 is the perfect tractor for teaching anyone to operate a tractor but I would like to see you include more safety points for people who are not familiar with a farm tractor. You should touch base on the brakes and how they lock together and what the purpose for the individual brakes are. In some situations applying only one break at a time can be dangerous. Also talk about the power take-off and the dangers of the power shaft. I would be concerned about people trying to operate that tractor with only the information that you gave. Thanks for the video you did a good job just add a few more pointers and your trainees will be safer operators.

The lever on right side steering wheel is a throttle. The foot throttle is for using with a loader. On the old style 4020 slow the throttle to a idle pull knob out and up is the engine shut off. On the 4010 their is a third reverse. It's by forth and seventh gear. I've been told that gear is in the 4020 transmission also. You just can't get to it.

I thought the "tow" letter was to signify that 6/8 station was only meant for road towing of implements.
I've heard people refer to the knob on the steering wheel as a (suicide knob)...some of the older trucks used to have those on them...
You didn't tell them about if you press the brake before the clutch it wont go so well.

The 4020 is a legend, even though I didn't have pleasure to ride it, but.....doesn't gear shift is a bit complicated??? As I can see you cannot turn easy from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3 to 4 etc, if you want to rise the gear gradually you have to make more than one move, also where is the idle position?? In my village in Macedonia (south-east Europe) in the mid 60s, a big state owned agriculture company has bought some 10-15 4020, the workers who were operated them still saying stories about this machines...they don't need mechanics, they don't need spare parts, dont need anything but diesel fuel and regular change of motor oil. Later in 80s and 90s the company has bought some newer tractors like Zetor, Belarus, Fiat, IMT and some bigger and newer models of John Deere but 4020 remain the best tractor ever entered in the village.

You're wrong about stop-change gear. Manual transmission, even un-synchronized, allow to change gear while moving. No need to mention the synchronized ones...In Europe more than 90% of all vehicles are with manual transmission and none have to stop to change the gear
+Кајмакам Ефенди Since you know so much about operating a tractor why do you ask questions in the first place? No, a manual transmission tractor is not shifted while moving like a automobile. In high gear top speed is usually below 20 miles per hour.

+Кајмакам Ефенди Tractors and lawn mowers are the same as far as changing gears, if you have ever operated a riding lawn mower, equate it to a tractor. They are the same as far as changing gears, you have to stop, choose the gear, and then ease off the clutch/brake in order to go.

How many hours are on that tractor and what year is it?
I always thought the shift pattern on these model year John Deeres were difficult to figure out what was what.

Same. I've driven lots of tractors. My favourite ones to drive are the manuel shift like the ones with A,B,C,D,E,F. I grew up driving them.
Steering wheel knob....hate them. We call them arm breakers. They inevitably wind up in the wrong place for your comfort with hydraulic steering.
i run john deere 4020 myself. most of my tractors and equipment is kubota. but all is either john deere or kubota. except a old IH disc. but any ways most people dont know cause it doesnt say it but the 4020 had 3 reverses. they didnt mark it on the pattern because it is to fast of a reverse.

So you can start in a higher gear or do you have to work your way up to the higher gear like in a manual car?
Late reply, but I just saw this. You start in higher gears. When shifting between ranges on these, when the shifter is all the way left, you are supposed to be at a full stop, so you don't have access to gears outside that range on the go. So, highest range, the lowest you start in is 6th, shift between that and 8th on the go only.
It's not an accelerator it's a throttle and the foot pedal is a foot throttle and PTO stands for power take off
That knob on the steering wheel is what is sometimes referred to as a "Necker Knob", "Suicide Knob", or simply "Steering Wheel Knob". I drive a White Field Boss 2-70, and it is equipped with one.

The lever is a throttle on mine
The term you're looking for is "hand throttle" or "throttle". Some tractors have the foot throttle (foot-feet as you call it LOL:)) and some don't. A lot depends on the size of the tractor and the engine... (our old Ford 5200 and 6600 never had a foot throttle, but the 2310 does and the 5610S's do. BIL's Case 2290 and 2390 and 4890's don't have the foot throttle-- he told me the Case engines weren't designed for a lot of throttling-- sorta "rev it up, set it and forget it" type of deal). Our Fords all have the 8 speed unsynchronized manual transmission "twin stick" (1-4,R on on the big stick, L and H range on the lil stick) and dry clutch. The big Cases I run for my BIL have the 3 range powershifts with 3-4 manual gears per powershift, which is nice, but not as nice as the newer yet Deere's with the 16 speed or 18 speed powershifts. Of course the ultimate is the IVT's, but those are expensive... and of course hydro's are nice on combines and cotton pickers-- sure beats the old 3 speed manual transmissions we had on our old International cotton pickers...
Neat video. Do yall have to shake the steering wheel back and forth to get them to start, to relieve the hydraulic pressure on the hydraulic pump? I've heard that's a fairly common deal with the 4020's.

If you try to repair a modern tractor, you can go crazy with the electronics, and if the problem is serious you have no other choice throw it away

in canada you have to be 16 to go on the roads with a tractor you do not need to have your licence you just need to be 16 to be legal on the roads.
