4R44E Transmission Teardown Inspection - Transmission Repair

  • Here we see a teardown of a 4R44E transmission of a Mazda B3000 3.0 V6. This unit is also on the Ford Ranger and Ford Explorer. Although the unit changes in name, they're virtually the same unit as I explain in the video. 4R44E has 4 pinion planets on the front and rear. 4R55E and 5R55E have 6 pinion planets. 5R55E has an added speed sensor and reluctor on the output shaft for an added signal for the computer to make a 5th gear. Most of the parts are interchangeable between the 3 including valve body. The computer is the one responsible to make this transmission shift 5 times. The added gear is between 1st. and 2nd. applying the overdrive band to give you that extra gear that some call it 2nd prime.

Holly crap no wonder why transmission repairs are so expensive, there's so many pieces that make the transmission work. Great job.

I have three transmissions two 5r 55 East and 14044 or 55 e. I plan to take the good parts out of all three and rebuild One transmission so that my wife can go to work. I look at it this way I'm gaining experience and pushing my knowledge skills above and beyond what I know now. Thank you to the guy that made the video I'm sorry I don't not good with names.

You've given me some extremely helpful tips about not busting stuff and this is the first time ever I've taken apart a transmission. I'll be rewatching this video multiple times. Thanks for the video!

This video has changed my understanding of automatic transmissions from not knowing much, to absolutely blowing my mind as to the complexity and the engineering that has gone into the development of something that most take for granted every day. You make it look so easy, as obviously you do this stuff all the time. It explains to me that if I have problems with the trany in my truck, take it to someone who knows what their doing! Thank you for the incredible detail in explaining the "what this is and what it does". It does inspire me though to maybe find an old beater, and pull the tranny to tinker with it and see how far I can get! With the quality of the explanations, and a bit of luck, maybe I can! thanks again!

Well, I just found out that half of the people on the internet are wrong and that the Turbine/Input speed sensor is definitely inside the transmission. Time to sell my Explorer. I have no desire to take this transmission apart far enough to replace a sensor when the transmission isn't even that old. Thanks for the great video. Very helpful.

Videos like these are infinitely better than a forum post or manual for someone with no experience. I was told by a shop locally that any labor to my trans at ~230k miles would warrant a new trans anyways because something is likely to fail. I was able to leave the trans in and rebuild the valve body with a shift kit, adjust bands, and replace servo covers in my driveway in one weekend thanks to you. Still shifting great at 260k!

Awesome video Hiram, When it comes to transmissions, You are the man. I've been watching and learning from all of your videos, but i cant find any answers to my trans problem. I have a 96 explorer 4.o with 4r55e transmission. One day the transmission went out as in all the gears that i selected were all forward gears, even park and neutral. The engine was under load all the time. I am a pretty good mechanic when it comes to rebuilding engines, axles, and manual transmissions. In addition to watching you i felt confident in rebuilding this transmission. So i ordered the rebuild kit which included all the gaskets, clutches, bands and o rings and misc. No hard parts. Rebuilt and installed transmission, New fluid(drained old fluid, didn't do complete flush)What i did find during rebuild was that some of the clutches were welded together and the fluid was filthy. Nothing else seems too bad, But i did replace all clutches and seals. Also, I didn't adjust the bands. I just put them back where the were. Now, my main issue. When i select a gear, I get either no response or only reverse. Park is park, reverse is reverse, neutral is neutral drive and overdrive -no response, 2nd -no response, 1st is reverse. I don't know whats going on. I know this is a long story, But if you could point me in the right direction, That would be greatly appreciated.

First off you are one hell of an instructor. I never rebuilt a transmission until now and I've gotta say it. Where did this technology come from? This was not intended for automotive this had to have come from something far more advanced and developed in the 60's after seeing the valve train and check balls that control things simply by rate of flow and pressure. It's absolutely amazing. 1 question in a ranger 3.0 with 4r44e transm do I need both the internal radiator cooler plus an external radiator cooler? No this is the first time it's been opened ofcourse not, I knew from the start the lines weren't going to survive. Just wanna know if I can bypass or even eliminate the external cooler. It's only 6" H x 11"L x 1/2" W it can't be doing too much but dumping all my damn fluid when I'm aggressive having fun out in the middle of NO STORE FOR MILES!!! ITS ONLY HAPPENED TWICE🙄 . Enough that I now have a spare cooler and 4 gal at the cabin lol

I know this is an older video. It is one of the best tear downs for thsi transmission.
I rebuilt my 4r44e with a heavy duty rebuild kit off ebay. I am pretty sure sure I installed everything to spec, including the band adjustments. I burnt my 3rd gear playing to hard in the mud and over heated my tranny. All the gears worked, but in D, if I gave it much gas it would slip upon 3rd gear.
But now D slips from the get go, as well as R. 1,2 work perfectly. What do you guy's think I did wrong?

I have a 2003 Ranger 3.O auto.I have a lot of fluid on the bottom of the pan. I had no leaks on the ground though until I raised the front of the truck today to do a routine brake job. I noticed there was a 4in circle of fluid now on the garage floor.
I haven't cleaned anything up to start looking for leaks but I'm betting this is something you know about already LOL.
    What should I do now?
There has been some hard shifts at higher RPMs but shifts pretty smooth overall.
I'm currently disabled and this is my main vehicle to get me back and forth to my spine surgeon and physicals therapy....I'm getting ready for another surgery.....already have 12 bolts....3 are 5in....and 2, -9 inch rods. I wouldn't do the brake but I have to due to lack of funds. I have to do the other side of the brake job tomorrow.
I sure hope this isn't something that's showing and exiting transmission. I don't know if I can handle it with no family anymore. Sorry for the fear rant....lol.

Hey good evening and you have a great video. Wanted to know if you have one that shows the teardown of the 4r44e valve body? Does it also show the removal of the manual valve? If it doesn't can you please explain how to remove? Thank you for the detailed explanation.

great video, i was able to tear down my 5r55e to replace broken reverse band. but now im having issues reassembling, specifically the "tabs" that apply bands on both of the forward drums; they fell out during teardown and i cant figure out how to position them

nevermind i figured it out. lol. but i could use some assistantce with which bolts go where in the valve body since there is 2-3 different lengths of bolts (i didnt realize this until after removing them)

Hello I have a 4r44e and initially I had no reverse. Replaced Reverse band and several bearings and upon install I had all forward gears but weak reverse. On the lift it would engage and go into reverse but on the ground it would barely move the truck... Any ideas? I have tore it back down and reinspected and see no issues. Help Please!

Please let me know. Your video is extreamly helpful ! Thanks for your time.

I like this video....thanks Hiriam -- I like how to dismantle the trans into pieces. I have a 2002 B2300 mazda, rear wheel drive, is the concept the same with my transmission? I am being asked to buy a trans overhaul kit 56006L, trans kit 4R44E, 5R44E, 5R55E...
    Thanks for this excellent video!

I have a 4R55E in my '96 Explorer. Loss of reverse, unless you really rev ir....won't upshift from 1st till over 3,000 rpm. Going to attempt a rebuild with a new input speed sensor, new clutches & steels, o-rings seals, and gaskets, & was wondering If it's necessary to change all the bushings? Just hoping my rear needle bearing, and sprags are ok. Also putting in a shift kit.
