    RIP Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu (March 13, 1946 - July 4, 1976), aged 30

      I am not criticizing Yoni; but I have a question. He fired the silenced shots at the Ugandan sentries. The plan was to totally go by them. It can be argued he ruined the element of surprise. That is to say, he almost blew the whole raid. Instead, it went great. Was he celebrated because he was killed, basically? And he became a martyr?

      (Neutral perspective on the Israel Palestine thing)
      He was the only military casualty and beloved by his men. After his death they essentially made a cult out of how nice a guy he was, and how he laid down his life for the country.
      The Netanyahu family didn't start out with that name, they adopted it from their pen name. They were excellent writers though, and they made the story of Yoni's life into a legend, to the level a cult of personality can exist around a dead guy in a monotheistic society.
      It does help keep young people motivated and willing to serve instead of dodging the draft. More importantly, Bibi, i.e. used the cult of personality around his deceased brother to catapult himself into the PM's chair.

      Well the job has to be done. Can not hesitate. Then trust their peers to follow through. Nobody likes to kill other people. But they had a mission to save the lives of others. They killed almost 100 enemies, saved almost the entire hostage. Lost one.

    This scene has taken a lot of criticism, but i feel it works.
    It shows the soldiers defending their people, and the dance sequence is rooted in music about what it means to be jewish.
    The fallen dancer evokes the loss of yoni, the only israeli military fatality.
    I feel this will become an iconic scene in movie history.

    • @user-je9fd3lt7q
      @user-je9fd3lt7q Před 7 měsíci

      It shows soldiers defending their people. The people who came to a foreign land drove people out of their homes, killed them, calling those who tried to fight for their homes terrorists. Britain and the United States sponsored and armed Israel as a permanent point of conflict in the Middle East, pursuing their geopolitical interests. Propaganda shows only one side of the conflict. Good Israelis and bad Arabs.

    Some details of how this differs from what actually happened:
    Jean-Jacques Maimoni, a 19-year-old French immigrant to Israel, stood up and was killed when Israeli company commander Muki Betzer and another soldier mistook him for a hijacker and fired at him.[26] Another hostage, Pasco Cohen, 52, was also fatally wounded by gunfire from the commandos.[69] In addition, a third hostage, 56-year-old Ida Borochovitch, a Russian Jew who had emigrated to Israel, was killed by a hijacker in the crossfire.
    According to hostage Ilan Hartuv, Wilfried Böse was the only hijacker who, after the operation began, entered the hall housing the hostages. At first he pointed his Kalashnikov rifle at hostages, but "immediately came to his senses" and ordered them to find shelter in the restroom, before being killed by the commandos. According to Hartuv, Böse fired only at Israeli soldiers and not at hostages.

    I've seen an interview with the director where he says the song and dance were chosen because they symbolize orthodoxy (not specifically Jewish Orthodoxy, but more like traditionalism in general, no matter what nation you belong to). As the movie and song progress, the dancers begin to cast off their (orthodox) clothes - and the only dancer who doesn't do that keeps falling off the chair, again and again. The idea is that, if you rigidly stick to your orthodoxy, you cannot negotiate productively - you'll never find a solution to your problem, and you'll get trapped in a never-ending cycle of misery (people getting trapped is another of the film's motifs).

    Personally I quite liked the choice of juxtaposing the very intense dance sequence with the hostage rescue. It felt like a satisfying crescendo to something that’s been building up the entire film.
    What I didn’t like about this film was the fact that it felt like it was trying a bit too hard to make Böse and Kuhlmann look sympathetic. With Böse, it sounds like the majority of his personality in this film came from the single moment where a Holocaust survivor showed him his tattoo, and he protested being compared to the Nazis. And it very conveniently leaves out the fact that Kuhlmann was a raging anti-Semite and was only too happy to have free reign to hurl her anti-Semitic abuse at the Jewish hostages.
    That being said, I’m prepared to accept that the scene here, where Böse chose to order the hostages to take cover rather than shoot them, is actually true.

    • @HalfLifeExpert1
      @HalfLifeExpert1 Před 2 lety +11

      Witness accounts appear to confirm that Bose did have the hostages take cover. I didn't see much sympathy in the portrayal of Khulmann, and I think the portrayal of Bose can be interpreted in the sense that it was a different era of Terrorism than what modern audiences would likely understand. Not to justify any terrorists, but back then, many Terrorists were less bloodthirsty, in the sense that they were not out to kill innocents to make their point being their tactic. Many generally accepted the viability of holding people for ransom to achieve short term goals or to get the intended audience to listed to their message. Some genuinely felt the only way they could get anyone to listen to their grievances was to take hostages. It was only as a result of this era of terrorism when governments started declaring no negotiation policies, and the rise of Specialist Counter-Terrorist forces, that hostage taking became somewhat less favored, and we start seeing more deliberate mass murder as the preferred tactic, culminating of course with 9/11. I think Bose, as portrayed in this film, tried to justify his actions to himself in a somewhat reasonable way. He didn't want to outright murder people. He was a revolutionary of the left-wing variety and saw this operation as a nessecary thing to do in the goal of what he saw as a positive revolution for society. He was still completely wrong, but I believe we can understand his actions more than, say, those of Al Qaeda or ISIS, who have a very violent, oppressive and all or nothing outlook.

      The song is meant to remember our customs, traditions, and history. It has nothing to do with our historical resilience which would've been far more fitting. A more dramatized version of "Hatikva" would've been more fitting by far.
      Here is the song in the video translated into English:
      Who knows one? I know one. One is our God in Heaven and Earth.

    Yeah, the general consensus was that the director botched this scene. I get it. Take a chance. Be avant-garde. In my view, it's usually actors who take this kind of chance. Mickey Rourke in Bar Fly. Nicolas Cage in many of his films. Gary Oldman in most of his films. But, if this is a retaliatory tale, don't we get closure from a narrative that shows the "bad guys" getting what's for? I think that's generally the case. This was certainly an odd choice with the random cuts. Perhaps they didn't want the stereotypical hero tale of Yanni Netanyahu. In my opinion - nice try, but it's distracting from the narrative.

    • @joejohnson8789
      @joejohnson8789 Před 3 lety +14

      @@ej4458 To be fair the raid in real life was only 30 minutes long. The dancing and song is a representation of the founding of Israel, the words are from a Jewish prayer, and the dancing is supposed to represent strife, and in particular The Holocaust (this is from the original choreographer). So I'd say it fits with the whole premise of the film, in that this scene is the culmination of Israel

    • @aaravrakesh4076
      @aaravrakesh4076 Před 3 lety +3

      @@ej4458 Again, very different motives being acheived. There is your normal violence, and then there is stylistic violence, this wasn't meant to be just a shootout and rescue, the dance adds the layer of symbolism, the cuts take away from the thrill back to the years of struggle and work, the falling woman of course is congruent with Yoni's untimely demise, and the rest of the raid is very choreographed. If you want like a genuine high adrenaline raid, as you said, Munich does it, the original version of this also has a brilliant raid scene. Director here is trying to achieve very different goals with the scene, and TONS of people don't like it, and that's completely fine, might not be your thing, but I feel it's important to understand the idea behind it, whether you like the scene or not.
