    I heard a speculation that the "human spider proxy" in the new Dune movie might be the wife of Dr Yueh. That rather than kill her he had her turned into a spider like creature.
    I don't buy that. It makes more sense that Baron Harkonnen had her killed since it appeals to his sadism to have Yueh think his wife was still alive. And why keep her alive? She serves no purpose to him at all since there is no connection to his life. He is going to kill Yueh anyway once he has done his job. Plus I think I recall that he told Leto that his wife "taken apart like a doll"
    After listening to the family tree. IMO. What if rather than killing his mother, Muertana Sarobella, he had her turned into the spider creature. Since she appears to have the nickname "The Black Widow". It makes more since that he would punish her by keeping her alive and loathsome in that form. (at least to the extent of creative license that Denis Villeneuve might have taken.)
    If you watch the brief scene carefully, You can see a human like chin of the creature as it eats from a bowl.
    He was probably giving her just enough Melange to keep her alive for so long.
    As the creature eats and walks away you are given the impression of something that is to be pitied.
    Anyway just an idea since it is never really explained in the movie.

      That plot detail is from the expanded plot and stories Brian Herbert and Paul Anderson have produced since Frank Herbert died - specifically from the Legends of Dune trilogy around the Butlerian Jihad - As Leon specifically excluded that additional material from the background of this piece, you can't reintroduce it fairly as an explanation here.
      The work Brian Herbert and Paul Anderson have produced since Frank Herbert death is controversial among fans and this channel seems to falls into the camp which rejects anything outside the 6 books written by Frank and the Dune Encyclopedia compiled and edited by Dr. Willis E. McNelly in 1984 (which the Frank Herbert Estate, controlled by Brian and the family claim is non-canon). Regardless of how people feel about each camp, its correct to say that the Dune Encyclopedia material and Brian Herbert/Paul Anderson material are often contradictory with each other.

      Nah not at all, other than being antagonists and wealthy. The Harkonnens have like no redeeming features, plenty of Lannisters throughout the various books were admired one way or the other if not straight up heroic. Also the Lannisters aren't particularly known for cruelty - Tywin is known for his brutality to his enemies when it makes his victory easier but that's it. It's not like a multi generational reputation like the Boltons have. The Lannisters aren't known for being cruel or austere to their own people or allies.

Herbert was a man of his time; all reports point to the idea that he wasn't actively railing against homophobia, he was just confused/disgusted by it like most people born in the 1920s were, and showing his main villain to be a homosexual was an easy way to show him as a domineering hedonistic psycho. His estrangement with his son was indeed due to him being gay, but it was a mutual thing, and while there was clearly mutual embarrassment between them, at any rate, they reconciled to some capacity at the end and Bruce was at Frank's side when he died.

    So for those who read the books and know the plot, I need some clarification.
    Spoilers of the movie
    So the idea behind the movie that there was a plot going on between the Harkonnen and the emperor to take down house Atreides so they assigned them Arrakis and the excavating of the spice to take them out of their home planet where they have their power, but house Atreides knew something is going on with the Harkonnen but didn't the expect the Emperor involvement!? And why is the emperor jealous of house Atreides!! Was it their influence? Military? Wealth? If it was one of these three I believe the emperor have the first 2 as for wealth house Harkonnen has it so what!? And the motives of the Harkonnen was vengeance I guess and their rivalry with house Atreides, while the emperor jealousy!! Really!! Or are we getting a plot twist about the emperor's motives?

    • @ProjectEkerTest33
      @ProjectEkerTest33 Před 2 lety +5

      Yeah that's pretty much correct. While Atreides wasn't as wealthy as the Harkonnen they had massive respect in the Landsrad (the collection of all the Great Houses) due to their generally honourable attitude plus Duncan Idahao and Gurney Halleck had been training Atreides troops so well that they were almost the match of the Imperisal Saukadar (the Emperor's elite). This scared the Emperor because he has no sons making him vulnerable to another house taking power if enough of the Landsrad back them and they have enough military strength combined. Alone Atreides would be no match for the Imperial House but if enough of the other great houses backed them they'd have a good chance. The Harkonnens have a massive historical feud with the Atreides stretching back centuries so they were the perfect tool for the Emperor to have Atreides destroyed without it being obvious that he was involved (if it was too clear that he'd been involved the other houses would unite against him in case he tried the same thing with them leading to civil war).

    The prequel books I personally enjoyed more. I hope they make movies of those books. Frank Herbert and Brian Herbert are absolute geniuses. Spoiler alert. The real reason for the beef between the Atradies and the Harkonnens was actually because the first of both houses that we meet became the absolute best of friends. So that sign of cowardice definitely was a true betrayal.

    • @user-uy6uc5ey5q
      @user-uy6uc5ey5q Před 2 lety +1

      If you think the beef between Atradies and the Harkonnens was bad, watch what happens if the Brian Herbert/Paul Anderson stuff gets put into this movie universe.
      Regardless of how people feel about the post Frank Herbert's death material, the style and tone of the books Franks wrote vs the rest are very noticeably different. I personally think you couldn't marry up the 6 books Frank wrote with the material published since his death. The way dialogue is treated between them for instance, a pretty vital part of a film, would be very hard to reconcile.
      Just out of interest, did you read the prequel stuff before or after reading the 6 first books and/or the Dune Encyclopedia?

      The first book is probably the most accessible to general readers as the rest of the 6 become increasing more esoteric and mystical , which is missing almost completely from Brian Herbert/Paul Anderson's efforts. Neither of whom ever capture the philosophical side of Frank's writing style, and are pretty much conventional plot driven narrative SciFi books. If you ever complete reading through to Chapterhouse you see how making a complete series of the whole of the expanded Herbert Dune universe is next to impossible if the films were to have a consistent tone.
