The reason why Jim Pankey is such a good CZcamsr is I can scroll through this comment section and on every comment there is a replay from Jim. Plus he’s a great banjo teacher.
@@JimPankey We watch Mayberry, Andy Williams, Don Knotts...Just yesterday this very episode came on, made me think that maybe Jim did a lesson on it). I'm glad you did this Jim, God Bless You and good luck on your surgeries 😁
Thank you so much for the lesson! This is one of the many I’ve viewed on your channel and they always are so delightful to take part in. It’s fantastic we have folks like yourself who are so eager to share your knowledge and teach it in such a marvelous way!
This is awesome Jim. This is one of my favorites to sing and play on the guitar, and after finishing the 10 Beginner Bluegrass banjo lessons during quarantine, I am definitely adding this to my list! Thanks for sharing your awesome teaching ability and talent with the world!
Wonderful! Just finished your lessons for Cripple creek! Still working a bit on my slides/speeding up the tempos but I can slowly play the entire song without any mess-ups! I knew that the second song I wanted to learn was Dooley. my grandpa would hum it from the kitchen when I was young. I looked up the lessons for the song and to my excitement I’ll be learning from you again! Thank you for these high quality videos, you are changing banjo players lives!
Great tutorial! This one is great fun PLUS we get a bonus with the cat appearance at the end. Pick some, meow some, and be of good banjo cheer. Thanks, Jim!
Jim... I loved Dooley since I saw Rodney do it with Doug and their backups.. You’re a great teacher and a good. talent. Thanks for the teaching. It’s awesome.
Jim just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate what you do, I am 57 yrs old and always wanted to learn to play banjo and thanks to your videos I am at least on my way, always an excited time when I see you have posted a new lesson, again many thanks to you
My 11 year old daughter made me buy her a banjo because of this song! She's been watching the tutorials for beginner bluegrass and finds it so easy to follow along with Jim. HE'S AWESOME.
Thank you. Grew up on the old tv shows. Even as kid with a old reel to reel tape recorder I recorded when ever the "Darlings" were on. Also recorded Flatt & Scruggs on the Beverly Hillbillies. Especially Pearl Pearl Pearl. Subtle hint. Thanks again your lessons are great.
Thank you! That Dillard roll is a rascal for me to get, but I'm working on it. I guess because of voices, but most of their stuff seems like its up in B or C with Doug's archtop tuned up pretty high it sure jumped out at ya on the record!
Great video Jim, I was just watching The Andy Griffith show and there were the "Darlings" (Dilliards) getting ready to play a tune with Andy and the one they picked was Dooley! I let that sink in for a few minutes and realized that "Hey, I bet Jim Pankey has the video on this one and !!!...BAMM....!!! here it is, just in time too. I did notice that you play it in "G" and their banjo player was capo'd up 4 frets, a key of "B" I believe. I figure you did it that way so as to make it a little less crapped up so it's easier to teach 😂
You do Thomas Land proud 😊 I've always wanted to learn banjo and I think because of your videos I'm just gonna buy one. Been a guitarist for about 20 years but I think banjo is only mildly similar. It seems to be in a class all its own and I'd like to utilize the internet and your videos to not just learn how to play the banjo but to learn about its roots and culture. I used to live in East Tennessee off and on almost 10 years total over the course of my life and as a traveling man I've always had a soft spot for the Appalachians even though the laws out there are questionable 😅.
Glad I stuck around for the outtake at the end. Could be having a cat talk to you when trying to lean is critical to success. And dig the checker Vans!
I can't tune my banjo right,I keep popping my 1st string trying to get it in tune,I'm having the worst time trying to tune even with a tuner....by the way Im learning to play through you so keep up the good videos,I'm still on lesson 1 just got my Banjo this month. As an African American with roots in the south I'm going back to my folks song heritage, but I do love bluegrass. Hey,give me a swaller and Ill pay you back some daaaayeee.I loved that song from Andy Griffith show.😁
Hia there jim! I really wanna start playing the banjo. Wondering what i should buy. Im thinking 5 string open back and playong bluegrass? Or should i have closed back? I will be using your tutorials to learn as they seemed really good and enjoyable thank you!
@@JimPankey funny how we're all different on this. I can't even read/figure out a tab - playing over and over is the only thing that works for me. Funny how the song gets in your fingers and then makes its way deeper in. You start to listen with your cells or something? It's all so cool.
My pinky knuckle locks up and I’m having trouble stretching it over the C chord shape during the chorus, then having trouble bringing my pinky backwards after. I injured my left arm years back and still have nerve damage down my arm. Is that it or is it just because I’m new and need to stretch my hand and practice? My wife could do the positioning without even trying. But I have to push my hand til it hurts, and make a ridiculous face.
Jim, I am having major trouble trying to sing the song to this song after I have learned to play it. Is this the Dooley that is on the Andy Griffith show? If so I can't figure how to sing the part at the beginning "Dooley was a good ole man He lived below the mill Dooley had two daughters And a forty-gallon still" Could you help?
Jim, so for the entire song, is the Chorus what needs to be played? Aside from the very beginning, and then we are able to sing the song to the second part you taught us? Thank you.
So... Don't teach a "break" for the verse portion of the song because there's not banjo break there. Just play the chords. Also... the banjo break is just the first bit of this. Refer to the Dillards (Darling Family) version. You "could" sing the verse to the kickoff portion since it covers the same changes.
Just some advice. Do not, I repeat, do not disrespect moonshine liquor. Have a sip. But it's not the same as Jack Daniel's. Or your typical store bought booze. I had to learn this the hard way. Great song though. Leaning right now. Whoo. Not for amateurs.
I pretty much only know and do bluegrass tunes. Old folk tunes like that never really got into my vocabulary. Doesn't make that great of a banjo tune either... at least when I hear it in my head.
I've been trying to learn crawdad song as well. It's hard to learn to pick a song when everything is claw hammer. Thank you for commenting back. Love your videos . Hell of a teacher and a picker.

It's rare for me to teach something with the capo on. I figure you can capo it to suit your own voice. For me, G is the right key.

Tuning is one of those things you eventually get the hang of. There could also be a problem with the string getting pinched somewhere...
thank you jim
😊
awesome been wanting to learn this, any way we could get some john hartford lessons?
Enjoy. I really don’t play a lot of Hartford’s stuff.
A Dillard roll sounds like something you’d order at a Kentucky sushi restaurant… probably some catfish and okra involved.

Hia there jim! I really wanna start playing the banjo. Wondering what i should buy. Im thinking 5 string open back and playong bluegrass? Or should i have closed back? I will be using your tutorials to learn as they seemed really good and enjoyable thank you!
the general rule is closed back = bluegrass and open back = claw-hammer style, but I have both and regularly play both banjos in both styles.
Buy what you can afford. Usually the open back is a little less money. Dominic’s comment is correct though.
@@JimPankey alright i was just thinking for mobility reasons! Thank you both!
Great stuff, is moonshine the secret Jimbo?
...could be... 🤪
I can always play the tab for songs like these just fine, I just cannot memorize them for the life of me!
I can’t memorize a tab either. Learn to sing the song then apply the techniques I’m teaching instead of memorizing a string of notes.

Everyone learns that stuff differently and at different rates. You’re still really new, so keep trying.
Can you teach a lesson on the banjo part of "doing my time?"
That's coming soon. Probably gonna be a LIVE lesson.
Guitarist here- new to banjo- I only have a four string banjo- how do you adapt something like this without the 5th string?
Thanks!
4 string is a completely different instrument. Check out czcams.com/channels/bM_qx3pK80M7uWctNNQ-tw.html
IM having so much trouble with doing a pull off. Especially with ill fly away. Is there any other way to it?
Biggest thing is practice. There's no "trick".
That's why my last batch of moonshine wasn't the tastiest........I didn't have notifications turned on !!!!!!!!
Yeah man, it’s the little things. 😜
