I quit coloring about 12 years ago (I was in my early 40’s). I love my hair. My hair is so much more interesting, I find it fascinating. I don’t care if it makes me look “older”, I am older. Be the best you can be with what you have. I love that more women are embracing this.

Your hair is stunning. I am a year and 3 months cold turkey with long curly hair. I really wish I would have done it at your age. I'll be 62. Ageism in my generation really did exist, especially on the job. It has been the most liberating thing I've done, and I thank younger women who are paving the way and doing it naturally.

I absolutely love your thought on this! Even now there is ageism but it is almost self-imposed sometimes! Most of the comments I hear from those who talk to me about my hair is about being afraid to look old. First of all, grey hair alone won't make someone look older. But even if we do end up looking older, who cares? Old=beautiful too!

Hair confidence. Yes! Well put! I have that now! 7 months in to my natural color grow out at 53 years old and I have cool white steaks at my temples. I was just thinking today how FREEING it is to pull my hair back and not worry if anyone would see the gray roots coming in!!! Now I show it ON PURPOSE and love it! Going to be a 3 year project as my hair is below my shoulder blades. I can’t wait until the day I cut the last of my dye off!!! Still hoping hubby will warm up to it. He is not happy. Last time, 8 years ago, I caved because of him. But not this time! I am DONE with the constant upkeep, allergic reactions, worry and dissatisfaction. Plus the silver brightens my older skin tone better than my dyed color did.

I saw your hair, and that is pretty much how mine will look.... finally someone around my age and my natural hair that I can look to for support and ideas. Huge sigh of relief! I find that when young people have naturally grey hair it doesn't really age them, but when you're older dying your hair can de-age you. I've been de-aging myself that way for years and now I'm letting the grey out and yeah, I look older, but I AM old, and that is what one really has to come to terms with.

I think you look absolutely beautiful all natural and the gray. I see the multi colors in your hair and it looks so healthy. You inspired me to try this again. I remember my grandma's hair, she has the multi grays and browns in her hair and the colors are somewhat uneven. It looks marbled. It's gorgeous. Mine looks like it could be similar. I never dyed my hair, so I won't need to grow out any dye. However, I have had a grey streak around my forehead for 10 years. I had an old friend tell me, that "I need to please start coloring my hair" to match my otherwise youthful look. I thought that was so rude of her! anyway, I never did anything about it other than hiding it under my bangs. A week ago I switched my part to the other side, and now my silver streak is set loose! Can't wait to hear the comments from some of my friends.....Stick with what you want to do, Jennifer!

I started dying my hair at the age of 12. I have had all different colors from blue to platinum blonde to red. My hair has always been healthy no matter what color I dyed it. Over 2 years ago I woke up and stopped dying my hair. I love my gray salt and pepper hair. I'm 37 years old and I will let the gray continue to show. I do use a purple shampoo a couple times a month to help make my gray strands more vibrant. I do get those feelings of needing a hair change but I have stuck to my guns. I can't wait till my entire head is gray.

I understand/don't understand the shudder about going grey. When I was young, my hair was naturally golden blond. As I got older, it darkened to dark blond that I found ugly. So I coloured it. I got tired of colouring it, so I let it grow out. My hair was even darker and now ,at 60, it's a dark chestnut red/brown with bits of grey. When I started going grey, I loved it. The last time I couloured my hair (years ago), I even pulled my grey bits out and away from the dye to keep them grey. I find more and more greys coming it. I call it my glitter coming in. Embrace your aging. No matter what you do, you are going to get older. Enjoy the changes. Love yourself not matter how how you are.

I'm a youthful 70 year old. I've been doing root touch-ups for the past 25 years. Last December I discovered I had alopecia areata. Hadn't noticed it at first because I have a lot of hair and the area was in the back of my head. My last root touch-up was in January. Around the same time I contacted Covid...my husband and I thankfully had very mild symptoms but I noticed the Alopecia had gotten worse probably due to stress. . There and then I decided to stop the dye jobs...my dermatologist has been treating the areas with steroid shots and topical clobetasol....thankfully the bald spots are almost gone. I had purchased a couple of good quality wigs which I used when going out socially....my grey/white hair is about 2-1/2 inches along. I have a shortish bob...which I keep in shape with haircuts every 8 weeks and hopefully by the end of the year it will be mostly out. I believe everything happens for a reason. Amusing incident went supermarket shopping last week wearing a headband and the checkout gal complimented me on my two-toned hair.

I just found your page whils looking for the courage to begin the transition back to au natural for the 2nd time! 🤦‍♀️ I initially took the drastic step of a buzz cut in May 2018 after a disastrous attempt to “blend “ my dyed blonde hair into the silver roots....my hair turned out PURPLE and my hairdresser said she couldn’t do anything with it because it was a metallic dye😱 So out came the clippers! I truly looked like my brother...but with boobs!😭 I got LOADS of great comments on my hair but I never felt like myself because of the buzz cut and the fact I was recovering from a really nasty ankle break, so was hobbling around with a walking stick 🤷‍♀️ The crunch point was on holiday that September when a woman asked me (to my husbands great amusement) if I had my OAPs bus pass! 😭 (it’s a UK free bus pass for the elderly) I stopped at the first supermarket when we landed , bought a hair dye and I’ve been dying my hair ever since. I immediately regretted dying it but it’s taken this long to feel confident enough to take the plunge again....without the buzz cut this time! 😂

Thanks for the inspiration. If you want an easy transition I would suggest letting your gray grow out sooner rather than later. That way you have less gray and not much of a line of demarcation. I started the process in my mid-50's (I didn't have any in my 40's) but when I had it lightened and highlighted to help with the process my hair was so damaged I had to focus on that. (If I had been brave I would have shaved my head to get rid of the damage and let it grow out gray....but I wasn't that brave) So it wasn't until I turned 60 that I started this process :( Anyway, personally I don't find it that hard. I'm only on month 5 but I just use the wash out root sprays to mask the line of demarcation. Of course, I'm no longer in a professional position where I might be judged but for me, it's not a stressful experience.

I'm 51 with I'm guessing.. approximately maybe 25% gray hair.
Not too much - it still looks natural but I do have some cool looking gray streaks coming in at the top of my hairline and temples... along with the silvery highlighted strands throughout.
Normally I'd be coloring my roots at least every 3-4 weeks.
It's going on 2 months now and I'm kinda digging the grow out pattern and look of my gray.
Your video inspired me to stay on course with going gray and not caving in to being a coloring slave.
    (Fingers crossed!)🤞🏼 😘

I’m nine months into my journey. I’m 40 and always thought I would let it grow out by then. Most people I know are totally against me going grey, including my 74 year old mother in law and my close friends and sister in law. Luckily, my husband had always encouraged me to do it and is loving the natural look. I have been seeing some very attractive ladies with grey hair in town lately. It’s all about the complete picture. Nothing worse than demarcation lines, fried hair or inches of root regrowth. I think a lot of people think they can put less effort into their looks, just because they did a box dye job. In my gym classes I often see people with damaged, straw hair and always thought healthy, shiny grey hair looks so much better on some of the other well groomed ladies in class.

May I ask how old you are?! Because you look very young, and your hair is BEAUTIFUL! I found this very inspiring. I am almost 30. My hair has been going gray/white since I was about 18! 😳 I get those genetics from my dad's side. But I have been contemplating just letting it go.... I have been coloring my hair about once a month (normally just a root touch up, as to not damage the entirety of my hair) since I started noticing a significant amount of gray! But my hair is very dark. And I'm finding it difficult to attempt to start this journey, because I am still fairly young and the few times I have attempted to start, I have gotten really nasty remarks about the way my gray hair looks and it is very discouraging! But I absolutely love the way your hair looks. You absolutely ROCK it! I just don't even know how to go about starting the journey and being able to transition into the gray with my dark hair!

      @CoolSustainable  Před 4 lety +3

Sure! I am 33 and started thinking about this at around 27. i finally started growing out my hair at 31. I do not regret it for a second! There are lots of ways to start - get highlights, cut your hair, or just let it grow out. I let it grow out- it sucked for the first 6 months and after it was not as noticeable because I kept cutting my hair short. If colouring your hair bothers you I say go for it!!!! It is so empowering :)

Just due to the snarky remarks I've received from people in the past. My husband's mom, even, LOVES to point out when they are noticeable and she has even yanked a couple out to show me, as if I didn't already know! 🤦🏻‍♀️ she dyes her hair bright fire engine red to cover up her grays, but loves to point mine out! LOL. I've always gotten rude comments due to it starting, for me, at SUCH a young age! I've never been confident enough to just let it grow! I think I will go get an all over highlight done to it, soon, and get the highlights toned with a silver hue, to see if that would help make the transition easier! 🙂
