  • In this video I talk about different ways I take care of my grey hair and the things I do to keep my grey hair from yellowing and generally, how to keep it healthy and shiny. Grey hair is a bit tough to keep nice, and especially when you're going through a grey hair transition, there are a few tricks to keep in mind.

    If anyone knows of any purple BAR shampoo, I would love to know about them!

    • @blukatzen

      I just got one from Falls River Soap company, but it is a very pale shade of lavender, and since I haven't used it, I can't vouch for it. Another company that comes up is Bondini purple soap for blondes and greys, but they are out of New Zealand and it is 22.00 a bar of soap. It comes in a tin for travelling if you need it for that. I have recently purchased several bars from Walmart of their inexpensive knockoff brand that mimics Lush soap. It comes in a tin and it's something like "Body and Earth" or some such name. They have a blue one but as with all soaps, it cleans well, but don't use it all the time, anything with blue shampoo, etc. can dry the HECK out of your hair. It's one thing that grey headed ladies will tell you. Plus, you have to watch out for your hair shafts accepting the blue in and you will adopt the blue into your hair shaft, and that look is dated to our grandmother's generation. Not a good look unless you are wanting blue hair.
      I will say I was using Shea Moisture's Jamaican Castor oil shampoo bar soap this past Summer and that made my hair grow faster than it would have if I wasn't using it. However, that soap is brown, and it did pull the grey out and it seemed it put the "pepper" back into my salt n pepper hair. Which I don't mind.
      Lush might have a purple bar soap for blondes, but again, drying out the hair. You must do moisture conditioners then. Hask has a nice inexpensive bottle shampoo/conditioner with setting spray line, but for expensive lines, I do like Joico. They have bottles too. I think the liquid formats of purple shampoo perform better than the bar ones. The pigment is dispersed better and can therefore penetrate the hair shaft better. The bar soap would take a long time to penetrate. I can give an update in a month or so of the Falls River Soap one, but the blue in there looks rather pale. Not like the Joico or Hask blue shampoos. So it might take awhile for it to work.
      Remember, when we get older, the natural pigment in our hair is gone, which leads to the color grey, then eventually (with age) white. What does this is a natural process of us producing our own natural hydrogen peroxide in our body. There is some research on this and scientists are thinking that the dyes we might have used during our life and the peroxide lifts (10 percent to 40 percent) we had in our bodies might be cumulative. I listen to Dr. Berg's youtube videos and he just mentioned this in one of his health vlogs, and one on aging hair. (This was within the last month or so, so it is recent, look it up.)
      I also had a big change when I went grey myself, my hair fell out about a year ago this time, and what grew back was curly! I went from bone straight hair to wavy 2-b, 2-c hair! So, I am learning the curly girl method plus grey hair! It's been a journey. I do not do shampoos or conditioners with sulfates, silicones, pthalates, or parabens. So the bar soap if made well, can work, but you have to make sure you do NOT strip the moisture out of the hair. Do not use the Apple Cider vinegar rinse without mixing it into water or you risk drying out the hair. It is SUPPOSED to be used 1 tablespoon to 2 cups of water. So that is a dilute rinse. It will work and then rinse out. I only do this once a week to once every 2 weeks, more than that and you risk stripping your hair of moisture. Our hair is already dry because it is carrying less pigment, which makes the hair shaft naturally rough, as there are less pigment molecules to work with. You have to use moisture masks to combat all the dryness, and remember, we are going into WInter now, which has more drying effects on hair. You can use avocado oil, argan oil, coconut or almond oil as a scalp tonic. The major enemy of grey hair is DRYNESS, and using an OVER abundance of blue shampoos WILL give you the dryness. Use them ONCE or TWICE a month, and use moisture in your hair and a healthy head of hair is what you are after, with moisturized locks, NOT blue locks.

      @@CoolSustainable You're welcome dear. I just want everyone to learn what I have learned by trial and error. As well, save the money and the wear and tear on our poor locks. We aging gals just want to look smokin' hot! We may not be in our 20's or 30's anymore, our bodies are older but our brains, well, I still feel like I'm 25 in my head. I still like to turn my husband's head, don't you? ;-)

      Haven't found a purple bar shampoo, but I do use a purple bar conditioner from Lush that I LOVE. It's the Daddy-O Conditioner Bar. I don't feel there is much color depositing, but it IS purple and has a lavender lather so at least it's not yellowing my hair. :)

    Try white vinegar instead - no color deposit like ACV and you can add some lemon juice too to brighten .

      @hollyxo. Před 4 lety +4

      I use white vinegar too, mixed with water. I mix half and half or sometimes 2 times the water. It brightens my whiter hairs and leaves my hair feeling smooth and nice. I sometimes will let it set on my hair maybe like 3 or 4 minutes because this helps really break up mineral deposits that dull my hair and also the acidity sitting on my hair for a little while tightens the cuticle layer. However, leaving it too long can dry it out so pay attention to the time passing!

    Well. I already do all of these things. I quit dying my hair about 2 1/2 years ago. It is now just past my shoulders. But I don’t use any heat ever. I wash it only once a week, and I use silk bedding. You are right! It’s been completely liberating. And crazily enough, my hair is the first thing anyone notices about me now. I had great hair before, but having nearly white hair ended up being completely stunning in comparison. I don’t have a boar bristle brush, though. I have several bamboo bristle brushes that I really like.

    Yeah my dad's mom was Snow White at 19 my dad was salt and pepper grey at 21 so when it came to us kids likelihood that we were going to have gray hair was going to be there by the time I was 18 I already had a fair amount of gray hair at 30 I had more gray hair than my mom did at 60 now my grandmother who had the Snow White hair she could braid it and she could sit on it and all she ever used on that was a bar of Ivory soap and her hair was gorgeous my dad just use whatever generic shampoo that we had no biggie but by the time I was around 40 I had totally gray hair only recently did my hair start showing a yellow color and that's because my son started buying and bringing home a different shampoo and conditioner otherwise I just bought some cheap stuff off the shelf I've never colored my hair but the one thing that yeah I've always done was not wash my hair every time I went into the shower I only watched it maybe twice a week but I'm going to try the apple cider vinegar that a couple people have said about the gray hair hopefully we'll get rid of that yellow only in the back of my hair but I have always had compliments on my gray hair do I do have to tell you a funny story my kids wanted to see me with the dark hair that you never seen me without having gray hair and their ages are 26 and 25 now and I'm 63 I bought a temporary dye that should have washed out in 10 Washings to my surprise did not know you had to try other stuff on the gray here so it would take the dye the way it should have by the time I washed out the 10 washing my hair went from a dark blood red hair to purple this is when my children were in grade school and at the time I had to go to school for parent-teacher conferences with short purple hair and it look like an Easter egg can laugh now but at the time not funny

    So, even though I'm past middle age, my hair has managed to stay light blond, which I have had all my life. At about 40, it started getting a little dingy from gray coming in, so began using demi color on it, a color to match my blonde, which is the 10 level. I just recently decided that I'm done with that and am going to see what my gray looks like now. I bought Fanola purple shampoo and conditoner thinking it would help with the growing out process, but it made my blonde look like mud! It looked terrible. Should I wait to use the purple shampoo and conditioner until the blonde is gone? I was not expecting my hair to look so bad
    with the purple. I only left it on about 2 minutes and most blondes hair look really nice with purple shampoo and conditioner. Thanks for all your info!

    I have never heard of bar shampoo! First I have a very dry scalp, doctors say I still have cradle cap and I am 58,lol But I cannot grow my hair past my shoulders or my hair gets oily and I get pimples on my scalp along with the cradle cap. When the color starts growing out and the grey starts coming in more then my hair gets frizzier and starts to fall out more. What should I do?
