I love this book club so much...I discovered it when you already had a couple videos done but I am caught up now and looking forward to continuing. This is so awesome and lets do another book afterwards!
For the position at 16:33, black's position is pretty solid, the knights and bishops are defending both sides, and both side has a rook for defense. But after castle, black voluntarily removes the h8 rook from defending kingside, and the king itself actually blocks all major pieces from controlling kingside squares
22:46 was Qh7 Kf8 Rf7 better than sacrificing the rook right away because Rf7 would be a check? As far as I remember, you taught that we should look for the most forcing move
I want to thank you for this series. Going through chess books, as I'm sure you know, can get a little dry & boring. This is a great way to keep people going through a book and to do it in a group setting. I like to go through each game with a chess board first from white's side & after a couple of days, go over the game from black's point of view, & then just going through the book without a board using only the text and book diagrams. By the end of the week, going through the game with your video is really good.

While I was reading this I struggled with why 11…b6 was considered a bad move. In the explanation he just says a higher rated player would avoid disturbing the structure. The book has had a strong emphasis on the importance of pawn play, and good pushes versus bad pushes and how they can weaken a position, but they also gain space, cramp the opponent, and break things open at the right place and time. As I read my thinking was that maybe this move would usually be ok, and the reason it’s bad must’ve been due to deeper tactical reasons inherent in this specific position, instead of simply weakening the structure. I checked with the engine afterwards though and stockfish likes b6 there. Of course sometimes what’s bad against people is fine according to the engine but generally speaking I find this idea of when pawn moves are good or bad very hazy at times.
Really good book though! Very nicely articulated, having a lot of fun with it.
To be fair as long as black does not short castle into white's attack then it would be fine for black, but it is a good advice for beginners to not push your pawns too quickly since even grandmasters sometimes struggle with strange pawn structures, and most of the time developing pieces do much more than pawn pushes in lower rated chess. (I believe I have seen several matches in the Candidates tournament this year where a pawn push just blundered the whole game, so as grandmasters can fall for that, beginners should definitely be careful)
(@8:50) Another thing is that after white plays d4, he can regain the gambited pawn anyway, though getting the center here is clearly a greater priority than regaining a pawn. 😊

22:03 Bxg6 fxg6 Qxg6 Kh8 Qh6 Kg8 Qxe6 Kh8 Qxc6 takes advantage of the weak c6-knight. White would end up with an extra knight. That is why Bxg6 is a good move, even though Ng5 is the best move.
So in the kingsgambit accepted check your mirror. (Triple check if you can take a free piece if you have to move your F3 knight since no one will guard the king)

Great series so far, thanks! Small thing, in the last positions of the mating attack, instead of Rxf7 right away, Qh7+ still works because only move Kf8, then Rxf7+ forces Bxf7 Qxf7#, no? Unless I'm missing a playable move somewhere?
i''ve read about a GM who played a twelve-board blindfolded simul! Is there a good way to memorise a position in a blindfold?
18:00 I used(when I was 1200) to always line up my queen and bishop(well both bishop waiting and my queen ready to slide to either e2 or d2) on that diagonal waiting for my opponent castle there and try to bait my opponent to play a6 or h6 and sac the bishop.
19:50 I was really confuse where that noise was coming from. I thought I got hacked.

For the next game (#5) please go over 7. Nc3. I have used this before - successfully and unsuccessfully.
Chernev points out how 7. Bd2 is used to protect e4 with 7. ... Bxd2 8. Nbxd2 but the engine likes 7. ... Nxe4 leading to some trades 8. Bxb4 Nxb4 9. Bxf7+ Kxf7 10. Qb3+ Kf8 11. Qxb4+ Qe7 12. Qxe7+ Kxe7 13. 0-0 (Black slightly better -0.2). I have seen some YT-ers suggesting Bc2 instead of Nc3.
Then the engine (lichess) suggests 7. Nbd2 Nxe4 8. d5 Nxb2 9. Bxd2 Bxd2 10. Qxd2 Ne7 Even (0.0)
Which do you prefer?
This is why I play the guioco pianissimo - to stay away from move 7 and play more positionally.

Hey Nelson , Really like the series and I had a question. On move 2.Bc5 was played. This gives away a pawn for free , so why didn't white take the pawn then but after its kingside got ruined?
22:49 is Bxg6 equally good too? As it adds another attacker to f7 and if it's captured fxg6 then the rook joins the attack from a distance and there's Qh7#
16:34 If we want to take advantage of the light-squared weaknesses on the queenside (especially after we’ve played Rb1), would Qe2 (forming a bishop-queen battery along the light squares) be a better move? Is it a huge difference playing Qd2 versus Qe2 ?
Kd2 instead of Ke2? because thats usually why some Qh4+/Qh5+ ideas dont work (for the Nxd4 line at the beginning after Qh4+)

It's pure logic. Memory can help. But logic is the greatest factor
The book mentions that after Bxh3 black has to take back to avoid giving up a pawn for no gain. But this move leads to checkmate. Is there a better response for Black?

I think black could have survived the position by playing Bf5 or Nf5 instead of Ng6 I put it on stock fish but l don’t know stockfish says it’s completely winning for white but l don’t understand why?
Hey, I know that I am late but could you explain to me why on 6:30 black couldnt go d6 Bh3 first and after like Rf2 go Nf6 and put pressure on white e4 pawn? I see some lines that look good for black
d6 exd6 Bh3 Rf2 Nf6 threataning to go Bg4 d3 cxd6 and now white has no lead in development
d6 d4 dxe5 dxe5 Bh3 Rf2 Bxf1 Rxf1 Qh3 Qf3 Qe6 Be3 Nd7 0-0-0 Nxe5 and I don't really see how white will use their development advantage

I would have considered d4 a mediocre move at best exactly because of Nxd4. I think Bxf4 was the better move in that position, but it would have had other liabilities. What I invisioned with Nxd4 was exactly that no matter what you do, there is going to be that annoying exchange on f3, black queen can join the attack and suddenly black gets the development. I definitely would have gone for that.
