Bondage & Liberation - Day 01/03 - Based on 15th Chapter of Bhagavad Gita. Talk in English by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Chicago.
The talks on bondage and liberation are based on the 15th chapter of the Bhagavad Gita. Swamiji answers many of the questions of spiritual seekers in this talk.
    What is bondage?
Bondage can be defined as a state of helplessness and limitations. Lack of freedom is bondage.
We experience bondage at physical, emotional, intellectual, financial and political levels.
Bondage is always experienced as pain, misery as sorrow.
All of us want to liberate ourselves from bondage.
How is bondage defined in the 15th chapter?
Experience of constant change is bondage.
How can constant change be called bondage?
The change is always associated with unpredictability and uncertainty. We have no control over the change happening around us. One is helplessly experiencing the change. This change makes us insecure and unhappy. Birth after birth is our experience. The experience of constant change is the experience of bondage.
    Who will strive for liberation?
One who has understood life as suffering will only desire liberation. Swamiji also says this is not a pessimistic view but a realistic view.
One cannot strive for liberation if one feels life is full of joy!
How did I land in this miserable world?
The second verse of the 15th chapter answers this question. Swamiji describes this verse about samsar vruksh with the help of the BMI chart of Gurudev. The branches are metaphor for the world and the roots for vasanas.
We are PFT (perceiver/feeler /thinker) - this PFT is none other than Om with the wrong notion that he is BMI (Body Mind Intellect) - and going through the experience of OET (Object Emotion Thoughts). We are all PFT interacting with OETs through instruments of BMI with the color of Vasanas.
Swamiji vividly explains each part of the tree and how it is a metaphor for our world and vasanas. Through this, he also explains the verities of our vasanas and their deep-rooted impact.
How do we create the world around us?
Through our own thoughts! He elaborates this with a lot of examples.
Can we blame God for the world around us?
We have chosen the world by choosing our thoughts. So the obvious answer is NO!
    Who will choose suffering, Swamiji?
Do we choose thoughts of anger? Then, we have chosen an angry world.
Are we not choosing the thoughts of revenge? Then, we have chosen a world with revenge and hatred.
We do not have the ability to visualise and understand that our actions are going to cause us suffering. We see the superficial pleasure, indulge in the situation, and suffer. The world of suffering is created by us.
Vivek Shakti - the ability to think deeply into the situation and see the pain in the indulgence - this is called discriminative intelligence.
How do we come out of this misery?
By understanding that ego is wrong and an imaginary notion. The ego is nothing but a bundle of thoughts. This ego is so natural to us that we say reality doesn’t exist. Paramatama having a wrong notion is called jivatma.
    Does jivatama exist?
No, even if we are not aware of reality, the reality doesn’t change.
When we enquire about the existence of the ego, it disappears - says Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi.
    When did this ignorance start?
Ignorance cannot come from knowledge. It is beginningless, endless, and it doesn’t exist.
How can we be happy and secure?
Only by holding onto the changeless can we be happy and secure. That changeless thing is not there in the world, but it is our own nature.
Is it possible to transcend the mind and realise the Self?
Unless the mind is purified, the mind cannot be transcended. The first step is not transcending the world but divinising/beautifying the world. Create your personality. Be a selfless person. Make your thoughts noble, divine and good.

Excellent n elevating description of 'Bondage To Liberation".
    I AM BOUND
This bondage may be physical, mental, intellectual, financial or political.
Living in this world where situation is out of control, unpredictable n invisible.
This everchanging world decides my destiny according to vasana n thoughts.
"Behind initial pleasure can't see final pain",get entangled n caught.
    AHAM BRAHMASMI
But before that know your real existence.
We all are Parmatma wrapped in ignorance.
    Jivatma doesn't but Parmatma exists.
Same as a dreamer doesn't but waker persists.
Be realistic, avoid anxiety , be free from suffering n pain.
Get rid of karm n karmphal free yourself from bondage ,step towards liberation.
    Regards n pranams Swamiji

    Swamiji 🙏
I can't understand how a 'soul, the self' who is a part of Universal Soul, Universal Self can become helpless ? We are already attached with that Supreme Power through breathing. This is nothing but the bondage, which is essential for being live. If this mistry is solved then there will be no feelings of bondage 🙏
