I lived in Texas and therefore ate a lot of Mexican food. I was happy to see Mexicans cook and bake with LARD, Their Cookies are like UK Biscuits.
Im asian, I quite enjoy British food…I think its a bit unfair when people say british food is bland…not all dishes have to be drowning in spices for me to enjoy it..

The problem isnt so much with British food, but with British people who have become accustomed to laziness and convenience. It would be like living in somewhere like Taiwan, and instead of cooking your own Taiwanese food, or going out to Taiwanese night markets you instead live at a 7/11 or familymart and use that as your baseline of good food. @@cdl209
@@cdl209 It's only US Americans and of course the frog and snail eating French who say British food is boring and bland. The US does this out of ignorance, from WWII GI stories from 80+ years ago and the French because, they are French.
American baked beans are much sweeter than the British ones. You need to use imported uk heinz baked beans to get the authentic taste.
I was thinking that when the Lady said they are too sweet, i bet they used the much sweeter American ones.

When the one wise matron referred to the Cornish Pasty as an Empanada I was reminded that all cultures connect. We are all human. This was a lovely video.
Cornish miners took their Cornish pasties to Mexico in the early 19th century.

The UK is a cold country, a lot of the more traditional food was designed to be heavy and use cheaper cuts of meat so families could stay full and afford to eat. A lot of potato, pork, batter. It makes sense for it to be heavier than good found in warmer climates. Both delicious- just different!
A lot of this type of food also stems from rationing which started in 1940 as a result of WW2, but lasted all the way until 1954. My Dad was born in 1940 and he was 14 before rationing stopped! There was also rationing in WW1 and a few other times in British history before WW2. Imported foods and spices were not really available in large quantities. These types of foods were things that could be produced locally.

Just as a quick example, from Encyclopaedia Britannica: "The term bangers supposedly originated during World War I, when meat shortages resulted in sausages’ being made with a number of fillers, notably water, that caused them to explode when cooked."
@@TheQuantumPotato I don't think any of them came from Rationing from WW1 or WW2, Bangers is just a nickname for Sausages, but true that's how it started. example Full English has it's origins in the !4th century.

As a British person living abroad this has made me so happy, especially when they dunked the digestive biscuits into tea.

@@hannahwootton6491 I'm a southerner and we don't do that down here. That's an Americanised version for sure. We have Mushy peas, curry sauce, tartare sauce, gravy etc. Definitely no Coleslaw.

Love the mamahs trying British food but some of the combinations were a bit odd. Never seen anyone eat fish and chips with coleslaw. Never seen anyone eat a scotch egg with pickled onions. We do have other vegetables not just garden peas and carrots 😂. Wish they had tried a roast dinner. Great episode as always.

@@DelicateBreeze They were trying British food, coleslaw isn't British and that combination is odd. We usually have fish and chips with either tomato sauce, brown sauce, tartar sauce or mushy peas.
Yeah, you can tell they made huge batches of carrots & onions and mashed potatoes and kinda threw it in with half of the dishes. A Sunday roast would've been great, though a bubble & squeak of last Sunday's roast would've been fine and easier (as well as very British).

So happy they got most of this, I was expecting a train wreck. Best compliment "The British are my homies". Saying "bangers and mash would make a good breakfast" is another finger in the eye to the French (pastry war). I worked in France and they have very strange breakfasts, I am surprised the whole of France isn't constipated.
I'm from the UK 🇬🇧 and we never have coleslaw with fish and chips. Just tartare sauce and mushy peas. Sometimes curry sauce. 😂
or ketchup... young children in particular tend to like that. I now ONLY buy Waitrose essential (their basic brand) tartare sauce.. so creamy and delicious.
As a Brit I don't ever want to hear complaints about our food ever again, if a Mexican mother says its good then you damn well know it's good.

You have to realize that this food was made in America and is tastier that way than the original British food unless you can afford to go to an expensive restaurant in England or have a British mom that's a great cook. Most Britons complain about their food as being bland when they are exposed to foreign cuisines.
@@deanronson6331 most Brits do not complain about our food at all, we have plenty of really good dishes and plenty of seasoning options, its just the closed minded people like yourself who believe that we don't, my guess is you have never been to England so your opinion is based off nothing but stereotypes.
-beans in the UK are different from elsewhere (even Heinz uses a different recipe there), and it shouldn't be so sweet. The batter on the fish is completely different to the UK one (which is crispier), and the fish should be so fresh and firm it doesn't have any hint of fishiness. The UK does not eat fish and chips with coleslaw, it should be mushy marrowfat peas. Also the chips (fries) should be crispy on the outside and soft inside. They shouldn't be brown. The Sticky Toffee Pudding should have molten toffee on top of the cake, both of which are very sweet and hot -but then offset by creamy custard to become melt-in-the-mouth. Biscuits (cookies) should be dipped in the tea until soft.
If I remember right our Heinz beans are actually made in the Netherlands

I did notice that about the poor, naked pudding as someone who's very particular about sticky toffee pudding because I don't like sultanas or dates, but you can't skip on the actual toffee sauce part! A good, hot pudding with maybe some squirty cream on top if you're feeling fancy.... custard to me is optional. (But tinned pears and custard is also simple but god tier, since my mum loves eating it so much.)

I thought they would complain about the lack of spice (not heat, but flavour), so I was pleasantly surprised when they complimented it so joyfully! Glad to see a culture known for their rich flavour can appreciate simple but hearty meals!

Why complain? Thry r moms... they analyze the food for its flavor. And anjoy the difference. They dont always want to eat mexican food or spicy hot food. 😂
@@J.Castle Mexican old people tends to have 1 of 2 aproachs for foreign food, they either love everything or they defend a capa y espada the traditional mexican food and doesn't like anything from outside, my abuelo is the former and my grandma the latter
I love that they just loved everything. British is absolutely fine. It just depends on who makes it. That happens with any food one person can cook something and it lovely, another person comes and its terrible.
this makes me miss my mum who died last year. she was not mexican but portuguese but the two older women remind me of her in some ways, especially the more gentle one.

As a Mexican who loves British television seeing the food always made me hungry! People say it doesn’t have enough flavor but those gravies look so robust and bursting with flavor! Those meats and sausages look delicious too! I know Brits also eat blood sausage
We do, though we call it Black Pudding, different regions have different herbs and spices in them, it's also what that full English was missing.

Videos like these are how you can tell when Americans talk bad about British food it's always projection from ignorance. Mexican food is amazing and it's nice to see how people from countries with actual food cultures appreciate others. These ladies were so sweet and super respectful and, most importantly, open minded. Cultures are often more connected than not. I'm Filipino British and the Philippines and Mexico are so similar to begin with but seeing them say some of the British food reminded them of foods they make for their families was super heart warming! Thank you for this video and thank you to the ladies!
Cornish pasties are the mother of empanadas. British miners that immigrated to mexico brought the pasties with them and their mexican wives etc adapted them with Mexican ingredients...Maiz flour etc
Cornish pasties are from Cornwall as the name suggests. Farmers and tin miners wives cooked this for their men to eat at work. Proper Cornish pasties have very thich crusts that farners and miners held with their dirty hands so they could eat the pipe without getting it dirty. The crust was then thrown away

Cornish pasties without a doubt one of the best dishes ever.

In the UK we mostly eat custard with hot desserts like fruit crumbles.
I love my fish and chips drenched in salt and vinegar but even I thought dipping the chips in the vinegar was not going to be delicious. And all respect to Alma, she's not got a sweet tooth, she clearly values nutrition etc, but she's just plain wrong about tea...it's delicious and I won't be told otherwise - it's like my religion. Tea when you're cold, tea to cool down, tea when you're sad, tea when you're happy, tea for comfort, tea just to break up the day...with none of the potential heart symptoms of coffee if you drink a lot. Love these ladies' reactions though - I was very much expecting them to damn it all for lack of flavour 🤣

People misjudge British food. I first when i moved here in England , 25 Years ago, I used to criticise and compare it with the one from where I come from... Then i decided to understand that it wasn't bad, but different. And once you understand that, you can't have enough of it. I love my Sheppard pies, bangers and mash, my chippy, Sunday roast with all the trimmings and obviously.. Full English breakfast.... The French say they have the best food in the world, but also the Spaniards and Italians, africans and Indians.. but England es the only country that have all the best foods from all over the world 😂😂😂 and yet its native food is excellent and it comes with history, story and sentiments. There's no best cuisine in the world... They are just different

Finally someone that agrees with me! I've lived in many places and come from countries that also claim to be the best, but i get so annoyed when people judge based on shallow stereotypes. I think British and Americans get a lot of flack but nobody really knows their traditional food.
You have to experience our climate before you can truly appreciate our food.
@@WraithTheSlayer They said "best from all over the world" so I imagine as in migrant communities included, i.e. Chinese food in the UK is better than the rest of Europe, Indian food in the UK is the best outside South Asia etc. The only thing not done well is Central and South American bc we have less foreign communities here.
there is a town in Mexico that has a Cornish Pasty competition, to see who makes the best pasties. They were introduced by Cornish miners who went to Mexico to work in the mines, over 100 years ago
These ladies are very kind towards our native dishes. Bangers and mash with onion gravy is a favourite. The fish and chips was a friday night special and the fish is generally shared as to expensive to have 1 each. A sprinkle of salt and a splash of vinegar is a base flavour, then you have either mushy peas, chip shop style curry sauce or some would have a beef gravy (not me)
Glad tou enjoyed them, if you do every try marmite on toast please put butter on your toast first and a light scraping of marmite then have a poached egg with it..the runny yolk is the winner here 😊

I spent two weeks in London and my fave food experiences were a Linda McCartney veggie burger and a vegetarian English breakfast specially made for me by the old lady who ran our B&B. She was so kind to cater to me! Also had a beautiful English tea with scones, little sandwiches and pastry served by church ladies in the church itself! It was really loverly.

Yes. But there are plenty of sad chips in the UK too. Im American but I lived on the isle of Skye at lealt falls. We used to travel from there to Inverness. The best chippy I ever had in the UK was in Kyle lochalsh. When we lived in England the chippy nearby was not great. As an aside, the best Indian restaurant I went to in Britain was in portree on the isle of Skye.
Not everyone eats just fish and chips from chippy. Literally can buy battered fish and frozen chips from your local shop. Its what your mum makes when she doesn't want to go to chippy

The fish and chips in this video is nothing like the fish and chips you will ever get from a fish and chip shop here in the UK. Big Ben is the name of the Bell inside the tower and NOT the tower itself.

Big Ben is a nickname variously applied to the clock, the bell, and the tower. It's not an official name for any. The bell is officially called "the great bell". Nothing incorrect about it being used as a nickname for any of the three.

@@nealgrimes4382 Fruit pudding is not something standard, with a full Scottish. Haggis and Black pudding, with Lorne Sausage and Tattie Scones would be, along with the Bacon, fried eggs, sausage links, mushrooms, grilled/fried tomatoes and baked beans.

I am Mexican and I love British food. Its breakfast is one of the best in the world. It is simple. It is cheap. It has a lot of flavor. Protein. Carbohydrates. It is very similar to the food that the Midwestern Cowboys ate, which the British introduced. British food is good. ,Beautiful and Cheap and Simple.

It’s funny as we’re often criticised for our apparent lack of food, Britain has thousands of years of cuisine and there is very good reason we don’t use many spices etc, it doesn’t grow over here. Our seasonal food is mostly vegetables, fruits and meat. We don’t have particularly fancy foods and we don’t have foods with exotic flavours. We have food that’ll taste fresh as Mother Nature intended but also rich in proteins and all your essentials to keep you going. That isn’t to say we don’t have our fancy foods it’s just the average British man isn’t eating that on a daily basis, we tend to eat seasonal meat and veg

No, they don't. UK Adults consume about the same amount of units of alcohol per person, per year, as they do cups of tea. Beer is only one of the drinks consumed and therefore is, on its own, quite a bit less than the total number of Teas drunk.
Thank you for trying our food with open minds and respect! A lot of our food is about comfort and I think some of it is similar to Mexicans with our love of beans.

Depends how the bread has been fried, if its been fried in veg oil then that's a no, if it's been fried in the fat from the bacon and sausages, now that's next level.

Yeah I would agree that does take it to a next level, but I still don't like it, and I'm English. I just don't like the texture, the saturated feel, I'd much rather have some buttered toast. I do love a good full English breakfast, but I will always pass on fried bread. Some people just don't like some things, which is why food is wonderful, it caters to us all, whatever our mood or inclination.

I never would've thought that folks accustomed to Mexican food, one of the most flavorful cuisines on the planet, would enjoy British food, one of the blandest. 😂

It's really not that weird if you take the spice part out. Both Mexican and British food is HEAVY on sugar, flour and meat sauce things
Probably because the food presented doesn't have ingredients that they haven't already tasted. You can get a good idea of what it will taste like by looking at it, so there arent any comflicting flavors. Also, I noticed british food uses pastry/bread a lot, and we Mexicans love bread overall.

Latino with 25 in England. And I am to tell you that British food is not bland at all. The problem is that we believe that over seasoning food is the norm. England is the only place where you can adapt the taste food. But bland is not 😅😅😅

They were extremely respectful and sympathetic to the flavours. Americans tend to always compare food to theirs and struggle to have an open-mind usually.

Thought I might get triggered as a Brit 😅but, thoughts:
1. The bread can just be toast or fried bread, typically I see more toast at our 'greasy spoon' cafes these days. Its purpose is mainly to wipe up the bean sauce you have left on the plate. But I actually totally like the idea of a tortilla instead if we're going fusion food 👍 If it's not going to soak up the bean sauce well though, maybe as an English Breakfast wrap?
2. 'Having it as a lunch not a breakfast'. Eh, it's a big meal and so you tend to get people who have hard manual labour jobs eating it or as a hangover cure after a night out 😅 If it's the latter then you're probably eating it as brunch around the midday mark.
3. I'd probably do something a bit more with the veg on the side of some of those latter dishes, probably more gravy 😅 but maybe you had enough of that. Could've changed up the pie and done a Chicken and Mushroom with a white sauce. Have to say though, the food quality looks very good and authentic so compliments to the Chef 🧑🍳
4. The custard suggestions with papaya, melon, nuts... yes please 😁

There's a Cornish pastie connection to Mexico, in Hidalgo Cornish miners brought the recipe across in the 1800's. Thees even a cornish pastie museum in Real Del Monte and that town has lots of establishments selling them, traditional and more catered to Mexican ingredients/tastes (locally called 'pastes')

I know British food is a joke, but it is good to see things like this... it really isn't so bad, just not very spicy and without a huge range of dishes. It does have flavour though, we use plenty of herbs herbs and also quite a lot of acidic tastes. We also love spicy food and more interesting food from other cultures more than most other Europeans.

We let the flavour and quality of the ingredients speak for themselves where in some other countries they drown their food in seasonings to mask all the chemicals they use.
