      Poison said it: --There are way too many employees overall in that picture. What the hell do they all do? A comic-book is something that is made on a computer and transferred to various departments digitally; productive people do not need to be in the same state, let alone the same building. So why are there thirty people all huddled together?

      A collegue of mine, in a former government job, had a text on his wall which went a bit like this:
      "There was once a bridgekeeper whose job it was to collect toll from those passing the bridge and raise the bridge if big ships wanted to pass beneath it. He lived in a small house next to the bridge and was happy.
      Then an inspector came around who decided that the bridgekeeper needed an assistant to help him. The bridgekeeper objected: he could do his job on his own perfectly well, but new regulations stated that at least two people should man a bridge and so the bridgekeeper got an assistant.
      Now there were two people at the bridge and soon a supervisor was appointed. Three people in the little house next to the bridge meant there needed to be a cantine. Then a CEO was added and the CEO needed a secretary and a HR officer and all the paperwork meant there needed to be an administration...
      The little house could no longer house all the people so a new office was build next to the bridge. The toll needed to be raised, of course but still finances was tight.
      "We need to economize!", the CEO cried, "The one with the smallest wage is the least important and has to be let go".
      And he fired the bridgekeeper."

    IDW; my favorite video subject. Last month, they decreased offerings by 20 titles, from 60 to 40, which they blamed on 1 less week in March. They've lost soooo much money that they literally look like (IDW) bc of the brackets, and it looks like Q2 will be more of the same. Editor in chief out, too; what a mess.
    Edited to add...no increase in y2y profit since 2014.

    • @dimoned123
      @dimoned123 Před 6 lety

      I mean I don’t know if we could see that for all the women there because I’m a woman and I would like to draw a comic book series one day. Also are you saying that it’s a problem that they couldn’t find a job in the field that they are working in? or the fact that this comic book company decided to hire them to do a job that they did not want? Or is it both?

    • @outdoorsycomicbooknerd2446
      @outdoorsycomicbooknerd2446 Před 6 lety +2

      Well your a woman so just go apply to Marvel, they will hire you just for the fact your a woman. But it be cool if you surprised everyone and actually had skill and write a decent comic. If not you'd fit in with the rest of the SJW losers at marvel and from the why you answered b sher... I'm guessing it's for SJW but hope I'm wrong

    • @dimoned123
      @dimoned123 Před 6 lety +1

      Outdoorsy Comic Book Nerd then you would be wrong because I don’t want to be hired just because I’m a woman, I want to work at a place that will hire me for my quality as an artist and writer, also how does my response make it seem like that I’m in it for the SJW? (I mean sure i’m in it for the money as well because I don’t want to be homeless, also in it because I like to draw and write) Because I absolutely despise people like that, now if I where to ever see one on the streets will I be so quick to judge them? The answer is no because how can I judge them when I’m busy running away from them to the opposite direction.

    • @brensherlock
      @brensherlock Před 6 lety +3

      this comic book company decided to hire them to do a job that they did not want. that. comics are art, art is a passion project. to make the best art, you need to bleed for it. and we can see that they have no concept of the art form or history or tone of comics, so they are diluting the art by pushing it in direction of their interest and veering comics away from the intended audience, which is young boys and males. yes there is room in comics for any type of story you want to tell, like love and rockets or louis riel, but superhero comics are meant for young males and are about conflict, thats just the way it is. watch any of zach's videos about the new wolverine comics, why would they make wolverine into a comic for girls where they sit on a couch and talk about their feelings? because women don't like wolverine, they don't like violence, so they are changing the comics into something they want, when there is no audience for it. and there IS no audience for it. 99% of girls like archie, not wolverine.

    You know, I've noticed something. Women need to know what men are doing at all times. Whether or not they're married to them. But once they're in, they want to change everything to suit their interests. But at no time will they let men in on everything they're doing, citing things like 'me time' or a 'girls night out', and men simply accept both situations.

  • @ikasando
    @ikasando Před 6 lety +22

    Those 5 guys on the far right look like the only ones who actually do the grunt work in regards to seriously working on the comics. I bet when they soy-boy walked in and tootled "picture time!', they all grumbled, stood together in the far end, then went back to work. The other 3/4ths of the employees went to starbucks.....

      ketherga one of the major factors which i discuss is disagreebleness .men are nore disagreeable than wahman and generally men are more successful than men . Disagreeble people are less likely to agree with sjw principles which on several accounts we have seen caused humougous failures in bussiness .
      Other factors are competency
      A competent man is less likely to depend on clique /poltics to perfom well and would not be bullied into sjw cultures. There had been numerous accounts on female writers that made great books not because they were women or focused on feminism or lobster sue heroines but because they were comptent and knew the first step in writing a good story is to write a good story.

    I grew up reading comics and going to drawing comic classes after school AND I WAS THE ONLY GIRL THERE FOR YEARS. And whenever a new girl popped up cause her brother was in the class or something I would get really suspicious... eventually other girls became permanent students but we were a minority and it was cool. The guys were nice and we had a good community.
    Anyway this many girls in a comic book company is weird. NONE of my actual present day friends who are girls know a thing about comics other than whatever movie they watch, AND IT'S FINE, with them I talk gossip and fashion and with ma bois comics.
    Also yes, that room looks like the room the comic book class I used to go to look like and I'm pretty sure it smelled the same, cheese feet, spilled ink and someone who used a moldy towel to dry after a shower :P

There was literally ZERO gap between everyone making fun of you for being in a hobby that had no girls and suddenly people attacking you for not recognizing how many girls are among you. It's actually STILL considered OK to attack you for not knowing enough girls, WHILE attacking you for denying that an equal number of girls are into it. You literally cannot win.

    dude, if IDW is nearly 20 yrs old, they at best were playing PS1 games like Crash Bandicoot or Tomb Raider. Dig Dug and Pole Position are 80s games, get with the times solider! :-P
    Seriously though, i've seen this situation alot in gaming- 30 yrs ago Nintendo games were created by passionate nerds with a mushroom obsession. Now, it's a big team akin for a movie production. Same thing with Konami and other companies. Growth tends to be a death knell in nerd culture, as becoming mainstream kills creativity and focuses on appearances and not product. To quote the song "Eye Of The Tiger"- "You trade your passion for glory".

      fair, but I brought up Nintendo to illustrate how game production went from small passion projects to big movie-esque productions. I didn't mean to throw shade on the Big N. I apologize for that. Super Metroid is still one of the most moving pieces of interactive art I have ever seen.

    i think adding HotPinkGeek was a good move. Having genuine plurality and intellectual diversity of minds is good. There is no way to objectively look at the IDW picture. They have ruined Transformers and GI Joe. It's like not being furious at the person who you watch keying your car, who then tries to defend their actions. That picture could be an Office Depot store as easily as a.comic company. It's not easily distinguishable. The disgust from their iconoclastic abominations is all you can see once you know who they are.

Even stupid stuff like budgeting and testing out printers. Double down whenever you write updates. What you did with the Quartering was excellent. Try to get more interviews on other channels. Maybe ask Megan Fox if she can write a piece for PJ and plug it a little.

      Collecting comics. Great idea, a quick plug during the campaign in the beginning and end of the vids would be good for catching "looky-loos" who don't know about it. Little updates would be good too, makes The customer feel like they are a part of the process. Plus it's fodder for video material. In case the twitter drama ever dries up. Am I being naïve that that will happen?

    IDW was the merchandising/licensing arm of Wildstorm. They did the card games and crap like that. Their division got let go in the DC buyout, as they were unnecessary, and they formed Idea and Design Works in order to keep doing what they do. It was a while before they started doing comics with 30 Days of Night. I remember Kris Oprisko showing me the black and white pages at SDCC before it came out. Kris, Ted Adams, Alex Garner, and I don't remember the fourth guy... Is that Chris Ryall?

    The gender percentages in the company should reflect the audiences. For instance, here in Russia there are way more girls who are into comics than in America, and you could see that reflect in Russia's biggest publisher, Bubble Comics. How much are you benchmarking Pulido's Lady Death as an example? He promotes the heck out of his books. His web site has regular updates, interviews, and promotions: www.ladydeathuniverse.com/. The square bound books have glossy & durable covers. But you have to be very careful with gutter loss on two-page spreads because the square-bound books won't just lay flat like a stapled floppy comic. Also, he puts promotional flyers, stickers, and coupons for next purchase in the bag & boarded books. The inside cover is used for the credits, including the web address. And the inside back cover and last 2-5 pages are ads for the next comics/kickstarters, a fan club with rewards for members, etc. No space is wasted in his books, and the design is clean, legible and uncluttered. I can post some pics to Twitter if you're looking for samples.

      Eh, sex has nothing to do with it, Japan itself has very competent mangaka for both sexes, perhaps one of the greatest shonen manga to come out in the last 10yrs is Full Metal Alchemist which was created by a woman.
      The problem with IDW is diversity hiring and the picture does say a thousand words.
      To the left you have a picture that shows passion, people at work. On the right you have a group photo, no personality just a bunch of people acting like the quantity of members working at the company equates to quality.

      While there is some truth to what you said, comparing US comics to manga isn't really a fair comparison. Comics are largely a niche market in the US, where manga is mainstream enough in Japan that it's pretty damn common to see people reading them while riding the bus or train, and that doesn't even touch on how they target individual manga for all kinda of demographics where US comics really only have a few demographics that they put any effort into selling them two.

      They are dead wrong then. The women who like comics don't read comics to read "women creators" most of the time. They keep trying to attract an audience who doesn't like them. Imagine Burger King doing a mass overhaul to appeal to vegans- the vegans most likely don't dine there because Burger King is already associated with meat, and taking meat away just angers the burger eating public. Strive to appeal to those who like what you produce. Add options, sure, but turn away your entire customer base just to appeal to a small margin who are not interested in your product anyway is foolish and a quick way into unemployment.

I am waiting for the comic where a busty female hero is in a fight and her boob flips up out of her bra and she gets smacked in the face with it. I think Zack's message came out wrong in this video, or he didn't think it through. I've never heard him say that more women = failing comic industry, but that's almost what it sounded like he was implying here. He only ever had a problem with specific women, particularly the Milkshake crew. The problem is bringing in women onto a team to meet a diversity quota instead of just hiring the best person for the job.

    • @AP-zw6ql
      @AP-zw6ql Před 6 lety +6

      His message has always been hire the best talent, not the person whose gender or lifestyle helps your company look more diverse. Talented female comic book pro's are very rare, not because women can't be talented, but because there just aren't that many female comic book pros out there. When you see a company with such a high percentage of women on staff (for the industry) it means they have either cornered the market on all the available female talent, or they are hiring based on gender instead of skill and talent.
      IDW is struggling and it is at least partly because they have placed the appearance of diversity over creating quality product.
      If you want to work in comics, go for it. Practice, work hard, and do your best to get your work noticed. If your work is good, people will eventually notice it and will hire you for your work.

    Meyer, something that I've always admired about you is that you're not afraid to speak your mind. If I started a comic book company today and I had to choose one of these two groups to start it with, it's DEFINITELY the one on the left. It has been my experience in business that men are almost always the pioneers, even in predominantly female domains, like the fashion or culinary industries. Men work lean, keep long hours, and BUILD businesses, particularly white men, which may have something to do with that risk-taking pioneering element to your culture.
    Unfortunately, once the proverbial terrain is settled, society dictates that companies of a certain size (like 12 or more employees, I think) must be inclusive and diverse. Perhaps it even makes the men feel good to give opportunities to people from broad backgrounds. But, the reason why these companies are failing is that they have more cash going out the door than coming in, they're building insolvency into the fabric of the company by hiring superfluous people who have no essential role in the production, sale or distribution of their core product.
    Selling comics isn't rocket science, IDW shot themselves in the foot with 'diversity'.
    Of course, we both know that. there are some world-class female writers, editors, and artists out there-- but this gaggle of goofballs ain't it.
