ECL was used for the sprite memory simply because it was extremely fast. It allowed for very high resolution animated sprites, a feature which really set Nintendo apart at the time. Perhaps one of the best known examples of this is the tiny explosions in Mario Bros.

ECL = Emitter-Coupled Logic. This type of hardware was usually used for specialized applications like radio-frequency counters or RF synthesizers. It was fast, but quite power hungry.
Fun fact: this is the first game where that character is named Mario. In Donkey Kong, he was known only as Jumpman.

Interesting bit near the end where you talk about the noisy arcade experience and how some games might have there own bit of odd noise. I think you nailed it when you mention people who have home games and they are worried about a problem that isn't really a problem. Just crank up the tunes and sip on a pop people!
There's two sides to it. Some people are worried about it because they think it's a problem, other people are worried about it because they're perfectionists and it drives them crazy :)

Lovely job. Those 80s arcade games were pretty unforgiving but so addictive.
Yeah, they had a different purpose, they had to make it fun but they also wanted to make that quarter :) New games for home play don't need you to spend another quarter so there's a slightly different design :)

I had no idea Jr came out a year after Donkey Kong. They made a lot of upgrades to that game. I totally suck at this game. It seems like they made you magnetic to the bad guys. They instantly go where you are. If you make it to the 3rd screen it becomes nearly impossible. This game just ate my quarters, I am epic levels of shit at this game. Nice work as always.
Took me 20 quarters (if the game hadn't been on free play) just to get to the upper right part of the screen on level 1. Not even talking about getting to the top left. And that glitchy jump there. But I got pretty good at this game, I can sometimes beat the second level 2 (when they have double the birds) and the second level 3 (our machine has the level order 1-4-1-2-4-1-3-4-1-2-3-4), but not often. Only once I could just barely get a 1 for the leftmost digit of the high score (after playing it for like 6 years!)

Its funny. The number of video games I forgotten I played. But all of a sudden that you start humming that game music from memory and realised that you must thrown a ton of coins at it in the 80's. Good stuff saving this old classic. 👍👍👍👍

Wow, we have come such a long way in 41 years. Even the NES was quite a bit more advanced than a lot of those super early arcade boards from the 70's to 1982. I just cleaned up my NES the other day, and all of the chips are already crammed in much closer than the arcade board here, which says a ton about how fast things have been advancing, but at the same time, it's wonderful to pay homage to, and keep the classics alive!!
Played the original Mario Bros. arcade, and watched someone play Donkey Kong Jr. across that part of the arcade place! Both excellent games!
EDIT: I'm with you about the arcade form factor; what matters is that you get to play it, and what if you want to play sitting down? I'd actually give my feet a break at times, and I'd pull up a high chair for arcade games with a nice special beer from the Free Play arcade place, and I saw a couple of machines like the one you worked on while I was there!

CRTs are great! Cocktails are great! JR is great! This style of cocktail ('Japan' style? 'Invaders' style? Compared to Midway, I guess?) is fun and I think worked a lot better as a table. I'm pretty sure we had a Mrs. Pacman in a unit like this at a sub shop in the 80's. It took the place of a regular booth's table. The regular Pacman cocktail really wouldn't have worked for that. Anyway, this is great. Loved the trouble shooting.
I just know with the cocktail cabinet I'd wind up leaning over it for a couple hours and kill my back. Worth the sacrifice to play a Donkey Kong arcade game again.
Impressive that old hardware CAN still be fixed with careful work.

Greetings from England, love the work you guys do, I’m a big fan of these classic arcade games. It does make me wonder though how these machines ever paid for themselves at a quarter a pop. The outlay must have been relatively large and they would need to be in play all day to break even or make a profit. Then there’s the electric and other overheads and maintenance. A bit like the automated car washes, cost a fortune and never made money. Much cheaper to pay kids a few bucks an hour.
That's the dirty little secret, I don't think most of them made money at all. They split the money in half with the location, so the operator had to make twice what the game cost a quarter at a time just to break even. Some games like Pac-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Defender definitely made good money but your average game probably struggled to ever even pay for itself, much less for the operator to travel around working on them and collecting them.

In the UK back in the 80s a lot of the free standing machines were in pubs or pool halls, In fact even fast food take away shops would have a machine buzzing away in a corner, most with some completely unfathomable game that would quickly hoover up your money. before you worked out what you were supposed to do, Happy days! Great job on getting this piece of history cocktail arcade game going again! Yeah I was never really good at Donkey Kong Jr. either. lol I am much better at Donkey Kong itself. I do have both 80's Nintendo Game & Watches of the tabletop and the smaller one of Donkey Kong Jr. They are pretty cool for what they are and are still fun!
I love this game! I used to play it all the time when DK wasn't available. I'm in GA and would love to have this in my basement...no matter what the haters might say! Just subscribed and I'm enjoying your vids and wish that I could do what you do so I coulds have my own collection. Funny thing, when I was a teen going to the arcades, when I grew up, I wanted to work on these and create them. Life is a cruel mistress! LOL
What i usually do is piggyback a good ram chip on the suspect bad ram one before i de-solder it.. It has worked for me dozens & dozens of times

I was at some guy's private arcade and he had a DK Jr where the sound ROM was missing. When I played the game, I also hummed the music the game should have made (and sometimes the missing sound effects) and he declared me insane 😛

Thanks Ron! Great to see another original brought back to service :D. I'm not the best judge but seemed to me some pretty good gameplay shown there. IMO.
The original DK became Cranky Kong and DKJR was his adopted son. DKJR had a son who is the current DK.
Only ones I ever saw in the wild were PAC-Man and Donkey Kong in the lobbies at some resteraunts. I played DK Jr while my Mom checked out at Alpha Beta (grocery store). That and Robotron 2084 were there. I’d run out of the two quarters before she got checked out and just stare at the attract mode.

When it comes to removing solder, just like you would do at the cheap end is use de-soldering braid, not really that technical my friend. It's more with the DMM and Logic probe that may go over some heads, but even then... we all began to learn some where and from the bottom up, right? 😉😊
I won't sleep tonight knowing those naked eproms are out there somewhere. :) C'mon people! Probably have 'em on the dash driving around just to rub it in.
My favourite videos are the troubleshooting. That last issue fixed with voltage adjustment seems sketchy, like you might see it again some day. Seems timing or clock related that may have an analog component to it. But then I am on a comfy sofa.
I would like to see you using a scopemeter instead of the logic probe. Let's see the voltages and how sharp the edges are, maybe picking up more hints as you work through the problem.

I'm a beginner and I make videos for beginners, we don't use scopes. If you give a beginner a scope, and then say "Here you go, that's MUCH better!" they don't know what to do with it, so it's useless advice. If you give a beginner a logic probe and say "it'll either be high, or low, or back and forth" that's something they can use and learn from. Oscilloscopes require a lot of training to even hook up, one of the main problems with teaching people is there is a huge barrier between the technical knowledge of the people who know how to design circuits and the average joe who's just trying to fix it. Oscilloscopes are way too technical for beginners and aren't needed, usually.

I just figured you don't like change and prioritize getting results and earning a living. Lots of the EM troubleshooting you do going deep into schematic logic solving mysteries is quite compelling. Your soldering skill is outstanding! I would highly discourage shorting pins! ECL is an old logic family that, if I recall correctly, was a lot more sensitive and faster than TTL. TTL was bullet proof. What CPU was in it? You mentioned sprites, which were used in the Commodore 64 which was a 6510
Z80. The CPU says nothing about sprites, the video chipset does these. Most arcade machines have their dedicated sprite hardware (think of a 74xx graveyard) There's arcade games from the late 1980s that have insane multi layer graphics with tons of huge sprites, all handled by one 8 bit CPU just because of the graphics hardware.
(btw. the chips he shorted pins were TTL - he didn't do it on the ECL ones)
It also helps they the monitor is digital. It's actually a CGA monitor so it uses TTL signaling for everything.

I wouldn’t be surprised if those ram chips died because of all the heat those arcade systems do produce over the years,now if there were heating conductors put on those ram chips along with a fan, that generated heat would,ve be reduced by aloooot.

anyone know why the graphics glitches when the voltages is ABOVE 5vdc? Shorting out the data lines going to the RAM chips using a logic probe, how can you tell if the RAM chip is bad or good? I'm still confused why Nintendo used ECL RAM chips, they are faster access time but it seems that nintendo wanted to get more color data in and out of the RAM chips per clock cycle?

@@LyonsArcade all is forgiving then, the 8bit Atari XL/XE versions of Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr and Defender where very close arcade ports for back in the 80s, Defender was probably my favourite back then.

I was expecting to see a demonstration of the proper way to remove chips since you had mentioned needing the skillset a few times. Do you have a vid you can share on the best techniques?
I can't do a video actually showing any repair techniques, the neckbeards will just tell you and everybody else I'm doing it wrong. So I just give general advice, you're on your own to have one of the neckbeards show you how to do it correctly

I wish more of the home ports had the cement mixer/conveyor belt level! Back in the early 1980s, the ONLY Donkey Kong port that had the conveyor level was the Atari 400/800 computer cartridge port. It was a reasonably accurate port that played like the arcade! Most of the other ports sucked and deleted the conveyor belt level! Colecovision was the only home console that had a decent DK port at that time.
The NES ports do NOT sound like the arcade although they're reasonably excellent ports. You CAN patch the conveyor belt level in the NES ROM of Donkey Kong. I did this years ago on a different PC and still have the ROM somewhere...
PS -- Notice I'm NOT making fun of Ron or Joe this video.
