Lyrics:
There's something special about six o'clock
In the morning when it's still too early to knock
And the dusty light shines down on the block
And reflects up and down on the hands of the clock
Six o'clock, six o'clock
A few hours ago she was standing here
Just watching the stars in our eyes
And the lights as uptights disappear
And I could feel I could say what I want
That I could nudge her and call her my confidante
And now I'm back alone with just my shadow in front
Six o'clock, six o'clock
I went home and found that trying to sleep was a laugh
Just watching my eyelids knowing my brain bids the night not to pass
I got up and got to scuffling around
But somehow it just wasn't the same happy town
And the bells didn't ring with the same happy sound
Six o'clock, six o'clock
If I go back where we parted
Could I ever be like that again?
Guess I'll just have to wait 'til tomorrow
But what can I do 'til then?
Guess I'll go back home and just wait until dawn
Guess I had to learn going back where we were wouldn't help at all
And I wish my head had been working right
We'd have gone for coffee and talked all night
But now I'm back alone feelin'twisted up tight
Six o'clock, six o'clock
Now I'm back alone...
Yes, now I'm back alone...
I'm back alone

Back in 1967 our local top 40 radio station (as did others around the country) would play this at 6:00 am. I had an alarm clock radio set to turn on at 6:00 am. This song woke me up many mornings.
Another under rated gem from a seriously under rated and forgotten band!
Not by me!! Love the lovin spoonful. 6 oclock probably their best song. Apparently j sebastian still going strong
I didn't hear this song until 1976 on one of the "Best Of" compilations. The feeling and sentiments of this song have just "stuck" with me ever since. This song is a masterpiece composition.
Honestly, one of my favorite songs of all time.
To this day, I don;t think I've ever heard this one on the radio. But it's been my favorite song they did. Makes me think of my teens & early 20s. It has as much production & top quality the Fab Four was doing at the same time......so....what happened? Great music gets better than ever with age of course.
Good question. This was a top 20 hit on KLMS Lincoln, NE. It sounded fantastic when it was blasted thru an a.m. radio, along side tunes like "Respect" and Light My Fire"! It is also my favorite Spoonful song. It almost seems like this song is avoided; maybe it has a stigma because it might be the last song the Zally recorded with the group. (bad vibes, bad memories? ... just guessing) I would like to what JS thinks of the track, the lyrics are amazing.
@@robertvavra414 Zal was busted in 1966 and squealed on the cops at the time to keep from being deported back to Canada. He reportedly also didn't like John's more serious numbers like "Darling Be Home Soon" and "Rain On The Roof" and wanted John to go back to doing hard rocking numbers like they did earlier in their career. This is what led to Zal's departure in 1967. This had been confirmed by John in a interview. However, it has been also said that after John left in 1968, he returned uncredited to the Spoonful as a session performer on "Revelations: Revolution '69", which is nick-named as Joe Butler's solo album, despite legalities by Kama Sutra Records insistence to be issued under the name "The Lovin' Spoonful Featuring Joe Butler". It was The Spoonful's last album, and the last Kama Sutra album distributed by MGM Records before being bought by Buddah Records. Steve Boone and Jerry Yester also appear on "Revelations: Revolution '69", despite the album being billed as by Joe Butler with The Lovin' Spoonful. After the Spoonful disbanded, Zal moved back to Toronto, Ontario to open a restaurant named "Chez Piggy's. "
Many people don't know that "Six O' Clock" was one of the last songs Zally recorded with the Spoonful. He was, um, excused shortly after. ZALLY RULES!!!!
Zal was truly one of the greats that doesn’t get the credit he deserves. It’s cool that he’s on this session because it’s one of the Spoonful’s most powerful songs. Isn’t it amazing that the circumstances that got Zal “excused” are soon going to be legalized. Agreed, Zally rules!

Zally Rules . . . and regulations
One of the first songs to feature a Hohner Clavinet.
Yep. Two years before The Band's Garth Hudson made the sound famous on "Up On Cripple Creek."
Under rated is an understatement to say the least!!
If that is using correct grammer?
One of my first albums...I still have it. I played the hell out of this album and loved this song back then....and still love it today.
I love song & the group. The Spoons are so unerrated. !
I had this on 45.
These guys beyond awesome
Really great tune. They had so many.
Some Procol Harum vibes on this.
A great song!!
A lot of goodies in here, thanks for sharing
I miss this on fm 95, ( atlantic city nj ) every morning before school
ok
I get it now !!
Better than an Alarm Clock .
Always loved that song!❤
One of the best songs ever written
I was able to ask John Sebastian if this actually happened to him, finding the perfect girl and losing track of her. His answer “Oh yes, Jim”
Check out instrumental version by Total Eclipse, also known as Supertime By The Golden World Strings.
👍🏼❤️
...in the Christmas morning
🤪😛🤔🤗🤭
What to say about Sebastian?
Great track, lousy album cover
John Sebastian drew that album cover. He was responding to the Sargant Pepper album cover. It does look like an amateur drawing by a 6-year old rather than a 24-year old John. Many Spoonful fans have described "Everything Playing" as the Band's Sgt. Pepper's or "Magical Mystery Tour.
Didn't like it...
