Dear James, I read your drop down section under your video and thought I'd give you a few friendly points about the word mate and its uses. Firstly, in Australia, 'mate' has no gender. You can call your female or male friend "mate." Secondly, although the plural of mate is mates, when used as a greeting towards a group of people, the word mate is dropped from the expression and so just becomes "g'day" Thirdly, when you speak to or about someone you don't know, the correct term is "ol' mate." Finally and most importantly, depending on inflection, 'mate' is either used endearingly or are fighting words so be careful. The wrong 'mate' by an Aussie could see you getting smacked right in the kisser. No wucken forries mate, Nolesy.
Hello from Australia! Cool video! I find it so funny that everyone thinks that we say G’day. You’ll hardly hear anyone say it when you’re in Australia. Hey, how you goin? Is what you’ll hear more often. ‘Yeah, nah’ is another really common saying which means no lol Random fact, most Aussies call McDonalds, Maccas 🤷🏻♀️
I still say it quite a lot. It's just a very informal greeting you might use if you were say, walking down the street and you catch the eye of the person you're passing and they nod their head and/or smile, in recognition of your existence and you, as a civil human being, respond in like fashion and may add a 'G'day' for good measure. I use it less frequently now of course as most screenagers just pass by without lifting their gaze from their phone.
I'm an Aussie. Australian's themselves have different accents. I'm from the West coast where people tend to form their words deeper, just below the soft pallet and off to the side and words tend to be more gruff/flat or uniform. South Australian's much the same and Northern Territorians similar but further to the side of the pallet, that twang you hear is stronger. Australian's from the outback regions then go to the next level with more a growl sound. Victorian's form their words around the soft pallet, a touch nasal then often raise the tone as their sentence finishes. New South Wales their words tend to form around the pallet then tend to be more nasal. Queenslanders are similar. Tasmanians tend to be more polished. Very suttle differences but enough for the locals to pick up on it. Unlike America and England not including Whales or Scotland. American accents seem to be distinct between north south east and west ( love Dolly Parton's ) and the Poms they can live 5 miles apart and they don't understand each other, amazing. I do like the Canadian accent, similar to the American accent but not nearly as distinct. I enjoy the challenge of SE Asian and Asian accents. I like the Tiawanese best because it has a real warm gentle tone to it. But if you want a serious challenge try distinguish the Tribesmen, the Australian Aboriginees. The Tribesmen from the Southern Regions of the Simpson Desert have a strong punching dialect as opposed to those from the Northern Desert which is much smoother in tone. Then both are very different from the Kimberley who's dialect is short and sharper and a lot in between. What a beautiful and interesting world we live in.
When James asks the rest world about American accents: I hate it 😐 When James asks Americans what they think about other accents: I love it! 😁 Why are they such haters? 🤣
Australians don't dislike American accents in general. You'll always be able to find someone who'll say they don't like this or that if you look for them hard enough. Australians are exposed to a lot of American and British television programs and they lap that chit up. If they didn't like American accents, they wouldn't watch American movies or TV shows, and that's not the case at all. All accents are great. I'm glad they all exist.

1:22 Bennett, the main villain from Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was Australian (or at least had an accent) and I couldn't take him seriously even as an Australian. My best friends wife is from Sydney, and she is the sister I never had. The most sincere charming friends I've ever had. Loving Caring and a Great Friend.
I’m never offended by the attempt. As long as they know we don’t throw SHRIMPS on the barbie. We throw PRAWNS on the barbie. Except we don’t. Prawns are served fresh.
The only thing I've been offended by is when I was talking about an Emu and an American tried to correct my pronunciation. I will share this conversation in the hope it stops other well meaning Americans repeating the offence. ie: *interrupts* "What's an Emu?" (Eam-you) *me* "A large, flightless Australian bird" "Ohh, you mean an Emu!" (E-moo) *me* "No, I'm an Australian, talking about an Australian animal and I can assure you that no 'Australian' has ever pronounced that 'Australian' word as E-moo!" Also, if you're an American, and you really want to impress an Australian, don't call them an 'Awe-see.' We call ourselves 'Oz-zee' and are easily impressed. Just FYI.
as an aussie wow i didnt know people thought it was better than the American accent, but them trying to sound it was terrible lol I have actually never said g'day mate lol that is so stupid
The lady who couldn't understand some Aussies, most likely was speaking to someone raised in the country or farm life. They tend to speak faster and sentences sound like one entire word without any breaks.
One thing most Australians would say if you visit out country is not to try and sound like an Australian, just be yourself. There are not many who can replicate it but there is a few handy tips to speaking like and Aussie on the internet I believe.

If they didn't like American accents, they wouldn't watch American movies or TV shows, and that's not the case at all.
All accents are great. I'm glad they all exist.
I'm Australian I live in Perth western Australia iv been dreaming to go to the US since I was young I love this video should come over here and interview us mate
Much love to all the Americans out there
1:22 Bennett, the main villain from Commando starring Arnold Schwarzenegger was Australian (or at least had an accent) and I couldn't take him seriously even as an Australian. Even if you watch the movie Chopper based on a real Australian Vigilante, the dudes crazy but at the same time kind of funny and chipper.
As an Australian it was hilarious to hear their best Aussie accents 😂
My best friends wife is from Sydney, and she is the sister I never had. The most sincere charming friends I've ever had. Loving Caring and a Great Friend.
I love the American accent. Love to you from Australia.
I will share this conversation in the hope it stops other well meaning Americans repeating the offence.
ie: *interrupts* "What's an Emu?" (Eam-you)
*me* "A large, flightless Australian bird"
"Ohh, you mean an Emu!" (E-moo)
*me* "No, I'm an Australian, talking about an Australian animal and I can assure you that no 'Australian' has ever pronounced that 'Australian' word as E-moo!"
Also, if you're an American, and you really want to impress an Australian, don't call them an 'Awe-see.'
We call ourselves 'Oz-zee' and are easily impressed.
Just FYI.
The guy in the Grey shirt at 3:30 pulled a really good Aussie accent out of nowhere!
as an aussie wow i didnt know people thought it was better than the American accent, but them trying to sound it was terrible lol I have actually never said g'day mate lol that is so stupid
I'm an Aussie and i think American accent is cool
In Australia we can’t really tell that we got an accent.
Well that’s how accent works
Me as an genuine Australian think that the guy with the gray shirt and black backpack did a pretty real Australian accent
As an Aussie.. charming and uh happy joyful.. might wanna check out the cranky ones in the outback
Honestly the guy who spoke about playing tennis did really well, I did a double take and at first I disbelieved he was the one speaking!
One of em nailed it but the rest violated it, haha sorry Americans
Whats your best Australian accent, "hello governor"
Me an Australian, "thats pure english"
*facepalm
Orr mate, she'll be right you'll see. See ya at the pub
No justice done lol......no one seems to be able to do our accent! love the video!
Love that I grew up in "awstrayliah"
Or as Californians call it, "Oss-trell-yah" 🤣
I remember when I was in school there was an American girl at the school I remember before I thought I didn’t have an accent I could definitely hear it when she talked because I also talked with her
So funny & great🇦🇺🙏🇺🇸
Thank you for watching it!
We never say “put a shrimp on the barbie” haha We eat prawns but like a snag cooked on the bbq preferably from Bunnings
The OI! ( 3:51 ) Was on point.
that was hilarious as an aussie tho its nice to know that most americans like our accent
Proof again that most Americans are actually so warm and wholesome. I dont get the hate they get 🤷♀️
I’m also from Australia and to be honest with you I was born in Australia before I came to Thailand
