- If the idea of a frosty winter photoshoot chills you to the bone then this video is for you. Forget about having to go outside on a freezing day, working with numb fingers, and worrying about a shivering model. Instead, you could stay in a lovely warm home studio, get creative with your camera skills and simply make the illusion of an ice-cold photoshoot.
Gavin Hoey does exactly that in this photography tutorial. Starting with just one light, Gavin takes you through his three-point lighting setup, one light at a time. Once he’s happy with the lights, Gavin moves on to the color and adds the cold feel in-camera with a custom white balance.
To ramp up the effect, Gavin then adds a homemade fake frosty window to the scene.
Finally, it's into Photoshop where Gavin shares a simple technique to instantly add a frozen effect to any photo. All you need is one of his free frosty frames and a few clicks of the mouse.

I was literally waiting on this set since it was in your stories!! I LOVE THIS!
Thanks Venus, it was a lot of fun to shoot!
Excellent again, all of you. Great team effort, love the poses as much as the lighting.
Hi Stephen. It's not easy posing with in a tiny window and even harder when you have to hold the frame and model! Chloe was amazing!
Yet another really good video from Gavin and I will download the PS mask, many thanks Gavin
REally good video. Great to see the same effect in studio and in post production.
Hi Andy. Usually I find either getting the effect in camera or in post works best. But this time I actually couldn't call it!
been a minute, glad this came up as recommend. Most of my knowledge in photography is Gavin derived.
You are really the Best
That background looks great
Thanks, it was made for this video back in 2019 czcams.com/video/bAafRyat2e4/video.html
As usual I push like before I even see the whole video cuz I already know how awesome it's guna b.
Great video Gavin.
well done man thank you
I learned the old fashioned way using a Main, a fill, a hair light and a background light. I don't see many people use a background light anymore. While I love using a Big soft box and a V-Flat or another kind of fill the old way still has it's place. Thank you for restoring my faith in the Old School way :-) Great video Gavin.
Three point lighting was where I started out ☺
That was awesome
awesome!!!!
Nicely done, very well explain!
GREAT !!!
SUper video ! Well done to all three of you. Really liked the frosted eye-lashes. Enjoy the Holidays !
Hi Alan. That was all down to Chloe. She's a brilliant model and self taught MUA. Hopefully you'll see more of Chloe (maybe even in person) during 2022!
I really love this tutorial, will try to replicate, and I like the enthusiasm you transmit any time! Great great great !!!!
Go for it Carla. Good luck.
Great ! Great ! Great ! Great ! Great ! Great ! Great ! Great !
Wow!!!
It's amazing how many ideas you can come up with Gavin! I look forward to your videos all the time. Too bad, it's not a weekly 😁
Hi Dee. 9 years in and still plenty more ideas to go!
Yes I literally have my calendar set to every other Thursday for these by Gavin specifically. Has made me a much better photographer.
@@GavinHoey I am happy to hear that! Looking forward to more of your amazing ideas Gavin.
@@MizMahogony28 2022 dates are all set and (spoiler alert) there might even be a few very special extra Thursdays 😉
@@GavinHoey We need more Gav, hopefully not an ignorant question considering how long you've been going but do you ever do workshops?
Thanks for the freebie Gavin!! At first I was kinda critical (to myself, of course) of you doing the color toning in-camera because I didn't see why you wouldn't want to adjust the tones in post to be the way you wanted them. But if you're shooting RAW, you can still do that if you wanted to, plus there's something so satisfying and cool about seeing how much you can actually get exactly the way you want in-camera. Great episode!
Hi Daniel. You're spot on about the RAW re-editing option but I usually find getting it close in camera helps everyone on set visualise the final effect and that is a HUGE help!
Once again the legend strikes with a killer tute.. mate this was a blinder and just the inspiration I needed to jolt me out of my creative lull. My thanks sir :)
I'm glad it helped Matt 👍
Excellent
