Somebody done broke the internet again. Black twitter is having a fit! A college graduation photo of a young man who is allegedly a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, wearing a pink women's pants suit and high heels, has people talking. It goes without saying the majority of the people out there are not in support of this. Seeing as though I am a member of A Phi A, and as a part of my work, bends the lines of gender regularly, I thought it was only fitting that I weighed in. Here are my thoughts...

And THIS is why we can't play both-sides with this conversation. Pretending that both sides need to grow gives space for folks to gleefully attack this young man. Women didn't invent pink. Pink didn't even become considered a feminine color until the 1940s. A bunch of heteros laughing at a gay man trying to be comfortable in his skin is a LOSS for the community. I was going to say "When did we become so callous?" But folks have always thought laughing at feminine boys was fair game. I just hope the brotha makes it through this all right, given how many in his community are happy to demean him at every turn.

Just like a Soror who just graduated out her letters on purple clothing. I was like when we start doing that? We have to train the young members on protocol. Somethig was missed. Even the most flamboyant fraternity members back in my day and I graduated in 2004 wouldn’t do anything like this.

Your actions while wearing the letters often reflect on the whole organization and that is made very clear when you pledge. You can do and be whoever you want when you are not wearing letters, but your individuality comes second to upholding the standards of the organization when you are wearing letters. That’s how it goes, and if you don’t want to do that, don’t join.

For ladies too - we are not to be seen smoking, drinking, or doing anything crazy in public in our letters; and back when I pledged - you better NOT be seen strutting at the party to a ratchet or degrading song. If I know I might have a drink when I meet up with friends, I will make sure I'm not wearing anything that represents my organization. That's out of respect.

Thank you for saying what the rest of us could not say. I will not even wear paraphernalia even in the liquor store. It's about respect! 💚💗💚💗💚💗💚
However, I still go to the liquor store.
