Incredibly good…!!! Very near to how police work is actually done … No shoot out’s..!! No car chases..!! A very good sense of realism… I know…28 years NYPD retired …. Thank You for posting this gem…!!
Many thanks for this. There were so many good British films from the era that are overlooked nowadays, and have to rely on channels like this for exposure. This one was not only written and directed by the great Val Guest, but features a plethora of fine character actors, even in bit parts.
That was an excellent script. It gave a really good picture (pun) of early 60s Britain - hardly any cars parked in the streets. The series Z Cars started the same year and shows the fascination with the high-tech work of the police. One flaw in the plot though: The police failed to make an identikit picture of John based on the description from Jean Sherman. But that would have spoiled the dénouement.
I loved it. Wonderful to see scenes from Brighton and Lewes. I actually shed a tear when the father is informed. Interesting to see some of the comments hating on it. I guess I judge these movies in terms of their time period.
Talk about pushing the envelope, waiting till basically the last line in the movie to give us the climax line that proves his guilt. I have always loved to watch British movies and this ones was a good one till the end.
This was an excellent murder mystery; you had to pay close attention to the dialogue to keep up with the story. I liked how Agatha Christie was mentioned because this was as complex as her stuff.
One of the best police procedurals ever. With one glaring error: a body in a trunk, dead for a week or more.. would, as everyone knows today, smell to high heaven. These chaps didn't even know it was there until they unloaded the trunk. Nonsense! This body would stink all the way out to the street! Many crimes have been discovered for that very reason. A writer today must know things like that.
Nasty things like smells and rotting corpse flesh were simply not considered or discussed within a good old police who-dunnit back then. Stick to the rules, old boy. I think I saw Warner wince (very) slightly when telling the parents of the unfortunate dead the girl they had to run along to the station to identify the body. All of which probably made this an X rated flick, or A at the least!
Yes I was thinking that too.. and what about the estate agent renting out the houses...he was with them when they opened the trunk, just before they open it he says something like..".I think I (or we) had better get out of here, I could get arrested for breaking and entering" 1, He didn't break anything, 2, he had the keys, 3, he entered the property at the request of the two police officers with him, one of them high ranking, and if that wasn't enough, 4, he owned the property.. Also the ambulance turned up soon after with flashing light and siren blaring... as if life was at risk...they were only then told they were there for a dead body....like no one told them the reason for the call out?...I struggled to watch it after that. I like the old ones but it did drag its feet terribly. (Modern eyes I suppose.)
@@caldwellfisher5288 I'm a 1950's British B film buff, so it was all cool with me. I especially liked the brief shot of the petrol station. Silly things like that !
@@maxwellfan55 I thought the same thing about being able to smell. I thought at first she was in the suit cases. If he waited a few days to chop her up to avoid blood then that would have made smell even worse. I always think that a murderer who can then chop up his victim must have a more deviant mind and stronger stomach than a ‘normal’ murderer. Where I live a man murdered his female partner and chopped her up. He would have got away with it except he disposed of the pieces by flushing them down the toilet. When they blocked the whole system up and it affected his neighbours pipes the plumbers were called and it was over for him. That was decades ago, when science was not so clever. But now they can detect blood from tiny spots. He must have had more than a few spots in his bathroom as would the killer in this film.
Very Very enjoyable, like Most Brit stuff! One thing puzzled me..the narrow assault on rental records would seem to Scream "someone knew" where to look? Most folk sign and leave...not wait around seeing which cabinet or drawer..?
Because in the old days when we used filing cabinets some clever person thought to attach a label on the outside of each drawer telling anyone interested what was arranged alphabetically inside the drawer! Makes it very easy to find filed contents quickly and efficiently! 😁
It's not. The actress name is Dilys something or other. She appeared in a lot of the Carry On films and the 'Bless This House' movie. She always played the brassy gossipy type.
I usually like older films, and detective / mystery ones, but sadly this one didn't click for me. I got over it being a bit slow by watching it at 1.25x which picked up the pace without making the actors sound like mice squeaking their lines. Jack Warner gives his usual solid performance and the supporting roles aren't too shabby either. Probably a film that benefitted from being B&w as it gives an extra starkness.

"Tea, please" in the middle of a conniption fit while swearing his innocence. How British can you get?
A classic movie of its time, with Val Guest as director. We really made great stuff in the UK back in the day...
what did you personally make ?
Quite correct, Ted. Val Guest wrote, produced and directed this gem, so a focused presentation. Guest was one of the best, as you know.
learn and understand the meaning of the word colloquialism.

A very fine who dunnit/ police procedural with an excellent cast of old school professionals.
Very well produced.
Realistic dialogue and interplay
between characters.
Good to see Jack Warner play a
policeman with a hard edge for
once.
This film never missed a beat in suspense....

I thought John Le Messurier played that part very well.

Great movie with no music ."..👍👍👍

Yes, one of the best. Watched it now for the fourth time, start to finish, without fast-forwarding.
excellent

Remember, they talked about the smell of chloroform. That just might disguise any dead body odor.
Thanks for uploading this - what a great plot - and a treat to see Brighton and Lewes in the 1960s.
Good film . Thoroughly enjoyed . Thanks for posting. 👍👍
Excellent dialogue.
Great picture.
@ 41.06. The policeman on duty is Geoffrey Bayldon . ( yes, Catweazle !! )
The best of Jack Warner
Great movie. Well worth watching.
Live nearby at Eastbourne
Areas so much has changed
And yet so many places the same

Excellent. A perfect British who dunnit. My fav. No shoot em ups or car chases either, my not fav.
One of my favorites of the genre.
Thank you 😊
I was born the year this movie was made . This is one of the best movies I have ever watched .
Great job
A great film. I fund it to have a very fast plot.

Jigsaw (1962). Excellent suspense filled movie. Thanks for the upload. She's 83
1:00 hour in, how women were perceived and how to deal with histrionics!
10/10.
One question. Can anyone spot a doorbell? It's referred to by the delivery guy and the teacher. This film is still the best.
Like the old movie but, didn’t care for the way it ended. 😮
what a twist
I'm still not sure but is the airplane factory secretary who brings in the personnel file Diana Rigg?
It's not. The actress name is Dilys something or other.
She appeared in a lot of the Carry On films and the 'Bless This House' movie.

Blimey, no wonder the murderer never called Miss Sherman again😂😂😂

Great movie 😂
Over-dramatic acting! Not a good movie😡
Irritating rubbish.
Annoying waste of time.
It’s a clever whodunnit with plenty red herrings . I love the classic Jack Warner movies , jigsaw 🧩 is a great movie
