Strabismus surgery is cosmetic in nature. It makes them look straight, but doesn't make the brain use the eye. Therapy can make the brain use the eye. If you have some stereo vision (depth perception) before surgery, the surgery can make it easier for the brain to use that eye. IF your brain doesn't use the eye before surgery, it will likely not make your brain use the eye after surgery. Most studies show that if you don't use both eyes before surgery, you will not use both eyes (together) after surgery. IF your doctor says you may have to have another surgery, you should ask why the 1st, 2nd, 3rd+ didn't work.

      I don't want eyesight
      I just want alignment
Can this surgery make my alignment proper?

Hi I'm trying to decide whether to get surgery or not. When I was little I had esotropia then I got surgery now I have exotropia and my doctor said that she will align my eye slightly inward but I'm afraid if I get esotropia while I try to get rid of exotropia. She suggested botox too but there is a risk of ptosis and it's not permanent after all. What do you think? Thank you for these helpful videos.

I have have got a slight esotropia in my right eye all my life I’m 24 I’m waiting for an appointment at a hospital for a second opinion about getting surgery do you think if they gave me surgery and made my eyes straight and I couldn’t use my eyes together I could do vision therapy like you did to make my brain learn to use my eyes together?

I had no idea that aligning my eyes would not result in them working together. Very disappointing. Almost makes me want to cry because that and improved depth perception are exactly what I wanted.

I'm sorry, that can be so frustrating. The good news is that now you know. The surgery does still help with some peripheral if it is successful so it isn't all a waste!

Do you have experience with older adults doing the surgery? I had two corrective strabismus surgeries as a child. My brain would suppress one eye or the other to function, but I also had years of vision therapy to try to get my eyes to fuse. Apparently that was A) never going to happen and B) the wrong thing to do to train your eyes to be independent like that! Anyway I’ve just recently had the surgery again decades later. Unfortunately now I have double vision and it’s been two months post surgery. Do you have experience where it has taken quite a while for the brain to learn to ignore one of the images again in activities like driving etc.?

I'm 21 and I was born with internmitent strabidmus in both eyes. But instead of the sirugy I did VT since I was child. Also I didn't glasses as I see properly. However, now being 21 i want to have the sirugy ti correct it totally as it appers when I am really tired, distracted or sleepy. So what should I do? I want to correct totally but as I said it isn't notorious. Would it be right to take the rest? I do not want it to look worse. As really progress in this years

I've heard some people have great success with it, but the results are temporary so you need to do the treatment every 3-6 months. It can be a great indicator about how well surgery can help with alignment.
