I had my surgery a week ago today in Toronto . . . I am 79 years old and both eyes were done during the same appointment . . . I chose the lens provided under our government health plan . . . arrived at the clinic at 7 am . . . registered in and then taken to the area where a basic pre-op was performed . . . the anesthesiologist saw that I was quite nervous about the whole thing as he ask "is there anything you would like to share with me" the surgery began at 8 am . . . a short period of time later I was back in the pre-op area where I was offered a cold drink and cookie and told that as soon as my ride home appeared I was could go home . . . I left the clinic around 9:45 and took it easy for the rest of the day . . . at no time have I experienced any pain . . . at times there is some discomfort with a feeling like there is some dust or something in the eye and that seems to be diminishing as time passes . . . the following day, using our public transportation system, I travelled to the hospital on the streetcar for the day after appt with the eye surgeon who shared he was very happy with the surgery and would see me in another week . . . that appt is tomorrow . . . I do not have words to express the changes in my vision that now has given me permission to re-think how I wish to spend the rest of my time on this planet . . two years ago when I saw the doctor for the first time he told me my eyes were not ready yet for surgery . . . it has been a long wait . . . please, please, if your doctor suggests you would benefit from cataract surgery, go for it . . . GO FOR IT . . .
Hello, is Cataract surgery covered by OHIP? Because my opthometrist said, it’s not covered. I’m confused
It depends on who is doing your surgery in Ontario. Some private clinics will charge you upwards to $3-5k.
I had surgeries in the Hamilton, Ontario area for both eyes. I paid for laser measurement ($200-250) and an upgrade on each lenses of $70 (in 2015 and 2017).
You are extremely wise to be asking the question. ~ Steve
Hi Steve! Thank you for your response. I called my Opthometrist to clarify. He said that my case is not clinically significant yet, that is why it’s not yet covered. I think when the cataract is visibly seen then it’s covered. It’s a shame because it affects my vision and my day to day life.
@@earthman0x I’ll try to get further clarification tomorrow from my admin.
I spoke with my admin who used to work in an optometrist clinic. She recommended that you get a second opinion from another optometrist who will be sympathetic to your needs. The fact that your quality of vision is causing issues should be enough to please let me know how it goes. All the best as you look at a new year ahead. ~ Steve
my wife is having the surgery this morning, hence I'm watching this while she is sedated ❤
Awesome! My mom just had her left eye yesterday and her right eye in 2 weeks. Already she can't believe how much better things are. She can see color better too. I'm so glad I finally talked her into getting it. She has Dementia and I had to tell her now is the time, because later on it would only make it more difficult for me (her caregiver) to get her through it. She's so wonderful.
Your mom is lucky to have you.🌹
I'm glad to find out there is sedation.
Thank you. I am scheduled for my 1st eye surgery next week. I was looking for a video like this a few weeks ago. This was very helpful. Every single person I know who had cataract surgery has nothing but good things to say so I'm praying I will too. I know any kind of surgery there will always be risks. Im crossing my finger that my doctor who was highly recommended by a nurse friend of mine. I also Googled him n he has nothing but great reviews. So pray for me that I will be saying great things too.
you posted this after mine were done, but I must say, I was very scared. However, it went so quick and my life has definitely improved.
All of you who need the surgery : go for it!!!
Dr. Michael, that was one of the best presentations I've ever seen on medical issues of any kind! You not only explained everything in great detail.... but you explained it in a way that we can easily understand it.
I may be needing cataract surgery in the near future. Now I know what to expect, and the choices in what to ask for. Thank you for being so dedicated to good eye care!
Thanks for watching and the positive feedback! I'm happy to share my experience and expertise
I would have preferred to be able to read his presentation than translate it!
This is an excellent video explaining the ins and outs of what cataracts are, treatment options, what to expect for a procedure etc…I am day 1 post op, cataract removal and implantation of an IOL. I was putting off having the operation for as long as I could, as the affected eye is amblyopic, and very myopic - I just didn’t think I would gain that much from it, however I am already wowed by the results. I am from London, so had my procedure carried out by our NHS. The only thing that was probably non-standard with my op is that they did it under general anaesthetic, because they knew I would be fretful if I had been awake during the op. I would recommend the procedure to anyone who may require it, or be considering it. It is amazing what ophthalmology surgery can do now!!
Just had surgery on both eyes and i had no pain.It was easy and quick. My vision is incredible
This is an incredibly thorough and clear explanation of seemingly everything related to cataracts and surgery. This doctor knows what he’s doing and how to communicate it. Thank you!
Going in for surgery in under a month. This presentation assisted me greatly in understanding what I can expect. Thank you for doing this!
Had mine done 4 hours ago. I had a stage 4 in my R eye. It's a miracle! I haven't seen this well in years and they say it will continue to improve over the coming days. I'm ecstatic!! Wish I had done it sooner.
Your tutorial was awesome and extremely helpful and comforting! Thank you so much and may you continue, to be blessed!
Going into surgery in a few weeks. This was exceptionally helpful. Thank you!
Excellent detailed easy to understand and follow presentation. Thank you
Outstanding video! Thank you, Doctor, for taking your time to make this most informative presentation for us all. Much appreciated.
Had right eye done 6 years back. Had left eye done recently. Both operations were successful. Done by Moorfields eye hospital UK (considered as the best eye hospital in the world ). Free under National Health with free medication and follow up care.
The improvement it brought to my vision is astounding.
Moorefields also has some great resources available online for any interested.
So wonderfully comprehensive! THANK YOU!
Thank you Dr. Chua for a comprehensive explanation and information about cataracts.
Excellent presentation,Dr! Thank you!!
absolutely the best explanation of cataract surgery... thank you Dr Chua.....
Dr. Michael Chua. Before any one goes for their surgery they should first read and listen to your information on CZcams.
You explained all so well. Takes away one's fear before the surgery. Thank you Dr Chua and keep up the Great job. You are so
blessed.... We are so lucky to have smart and good doctors like you. Amen
I wish I had the guts to look it up BEFORE my surgery! The mind has a way of making things worse. It was a horror movie for me the 1st time, but after knowing what to expect, it went much easier & smoother the 2nd time (yesterday)!
God Bless you! I just had two weeks ago cataract surgery and it was after kind of foggy but is geting better now. Thank you for the explanation.
Thank you Dr. Chua for your video. Everything you stated in your video is so very true. I just had my right eye done 2 days ago and your video re-forced some of the questions that was on my mind and also reiterated what I have already come to experience and know! Like you said in your video, Everyone is different. I for one did not, nor have I experienced any kind of pain to deter me from getting my other eye done next week. For the 1st 2 days the most I have experienced is the sensitivity to the sun light. I am very sensitive to the sun light to start with. Therefore in order to make it more comfortable for me, I wear my sunglasses, at all times, even in the house. I have notice that today the sensitivity to the sun has gotten better. I have not doubt that by tomorrow I won't need to wear my sun glasses inside as much. There is NOTHING to be afraid of. As long as you follow the instructions you are given to the "T", Take it easy as they suggest all should turn out well. Use eye drops as directed, sleep with the shield over your eye at night, rest a lot and anything else the Doctor suggests for you to do. Also make sure that your doctor does a lot of Cataract Surgeries , therefore knows what he is doing! If you are on the fence, talk to people, talk with your doctor, ask a lot of questions in order to get over your fears.. Even watch video's of the operation being done! Whatever it takes, for you only have ONE set of eye's..... ; ))
Thanks for your comment. I'm happy to hear about your wonderful experience with surgery. I agree, our eyes are very important!!
I’m glad you highlighted the importance of following your Surgeon’s protocol to a T as well as the eye drop regimen.
I want to also recommend that anyone having cataract surgery post vitrectomy that you might want to take a little more time than prescribed before going back to regular life.
For me, I felt pressure in my eye 14 days post surgery when lifting 50-60 pounds of our rental equipment. This scared me enough to extend my no lifting time to 21 days.
No regrets in having done this! Success! ~ Steve
Excellent presentation! Thank you for posting this, very informative.
the best and total explanation I have ever seen in any video, I just had my first surgery and know what to expect and be aware of. Thank you for this info.
Thanks for this! I'm going to tell my ophthalmologist that they need to give their patients a link to this video. You covered everything in enough detail that I feel way less anxious about the process now.
Very informative. ! Thank you Dr Chua
Great info and cleared up my questions.
Thank You so much!

How much did you pay
Excellent information easy to understand. Well done 👍
Very informative 👍👍👍
Thank you Dr. Chua🙏
Excellent informational video. Thank you Dr. Chua!
Best video I’ve seen on this topic. Thank you for posting.
Thank you so much for the information. I am due for my surgery in two weeks and was very apprehensive but on listening to you I feel way more confident.
Hello! How was your surgery and how do you feel after? Could you share with us your experience please!
@@davidchicas7385 Thanks for your concern! My surgery went well and as of the very first day post surgery when the bandage wasremoved I was seeing clearly! I followed the doctor’s instructions with respect to administering the three eye drops and had very little inflammation or pain in my eye. It has been approximately 5 1/2 weeks and I am still seeing well. Only challenge is that my left eye surgery is carded some 8 months …in Feb/Mar’24, so there is a vast difference in using both eyes. The closest I can explain with the difference of sight is that the operated eye vision is like seeing with a 100 watt bulb and the left eye is like with a 70 watt bulb. My depth perception is also skewed. Once again thanks for your support.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad to hear your surgery went well
Thank You so much explaining cataract surgery Dr. Micheal. I'm having surgery on my left eye in August and my right eye sometimes in October. I am sort nerves about getting this done.... I pray all goes well with this surgery.
Great description of the facts! Thank you!
Excellent lecture. Thank you Dr. MC

Thank you. Well presented. Very clear and helpful.
Thank you Dr Michael. Very informative .
Perfect job, young man.
I won't be seeing you, but i wish i was. Take care and remember...when much is given, much is expected.
God Bless You!
I just had surgery and im amazed at how my vision improved immediately
Thank you so much, I have been so reluctant to do the surgery but after this all my anxiety around the surgery have been eliminated.
A very informative presentation. Thank you from Northern Ireland.
Dr. Michael Chua, thank so much for such a well-done video that covers everything that one needs to know before an cataract surgery. I am so impressed with your presentation style. Thank you again. 🙏
Superb presentation. I'm due for this surgery in the coming months and this was very helpful in understanding the process and options. Thanks very much for your post.
Thank you vety informative and insightful.
I appreciate the full walk through you gave. I'm 68 and just got told I have significant cataracts. That was a surprise to me. I just thought I needed new glasses. Thank you for telling me the pros and cons. I'm still very nervous, but you didn't mention any patients not surviving, so I will go to my pre-op appointment. What happens if I can't hold my eye still. My eyes tend to follow the floaters, and before I know it, I'm looking at the bottom of a page, TV screen, or phone screen.
Thank you Dr this is very helpful.
Had mine done Monday February 5 and I’m impressed and pleased
Was yours by laser? Cañ you see better? Thanks
Thank you so much for taking the time - very informative and I have more confidence in my decision to have them done.
Very thorough. Thank you.
Very informative. Thanks
Great video, answered all the questions I still had. I'm scheduled for cataract surgery in less than a week.
My cataract surgery was the easiest surgery I have ever had with AMAZING results! No issues at all. I just had both my cataracts removed-the first surgery was 2 1/2 weeks ago, and the second surgery was 3 days ago. My vision change was almost immediate! I had an astigmatism in the 1st eye. The 2nd eye did not need the astigmatism lens. The only thing I remember in surgery was a bright light. I am 72 years old. I needed no Tylenol for pain.I would recommend this surgery to everyone who needs it. I was not apprehensive at all. I have worn glasses since I was 11 years old. It is so nice not to wear glasses to watch television anymore. I will use a [air of readers from Dollar Tree( recommended by eye staff) for only $1.25 if I am reading or doing crafts for long periods.
Ok.
@@dorrettbarnes7425 You're awful.
Excellent information. Very detailed. Thank you.
I had cataract surgery in both eyes Im so happy I did it I see very well now
Was yours done with plastic?
No
I just had cataract surgery done. It feels great to see again.
That’s great to hear. Enjoy your vision!
Thank you for a very informative video. Really covered the whole spectrum.
Thanks Dr. Chua...I need these in 8:42 formations as I will be having my cataract surgery in the next 6 months...For sure I will be hearing this video several times. I'm almost 70 yrs old...here in Canada..
Outstanding presentation, well done sir and thank you.
I would like to thank you and your fellow surgeons for selecting eye surgery as your specialty.
You do a lot of good for a tremendous amount of people.
I am very excited with the results from my first surgery. I can't wait for the second eye surgery in April.
Thank you, this video and your info took away a lot of stress off me. I am having catarct surgery soon
Thank you Dr. Chua for a great video. It would have been helpful to have seen this before my procedures. Both procedures went well. My distance vision is excellent. I have to grab readers to see close up. It is amazing not wearing glasses all the time. I’ve been wearing glasses for about 54 years. My doctor recommended achieving monovision with a contact lens for near vision. I will try that next. This video helped me to understand better about the type of lens. Blessings!
Excellent information 💯!!!!
Going for this in September. Thank you for this info. Much appreciated!
This is the best video that explains exactly what you will see with each lens. I chose monovision and very happy with it.
Glad you like it! I’m happy to hear about your positive experience with monovision
Dr. Chua this Information was very helpful Blessings 🙏 Thank You.
Thank you Dr Michael, for making this video. I am having cataract surgery in 2 days and this video explained the complete procedure from start to finish and I feel much more comfortable about having the surgery. Thank you again for making this video!!!
Excellent explanation!
Thanks for doing this video it helped me a lot to relax, I’m going to get surgery this fall, once again thanks!
I had both eyes done at the same time. Mono vision lens, as I used them for years. No problems after surgery. I was 75.
Thank you very much
Doctor.
Thank you for explaining in simple terms for me to understand.
Great information Dr. CHUA, my cataracts are very slow in progress, ophthalmologist said to check again in a year. This is good for now.
That was a comprehensive and really well presented and explained video. Thank you!
Hello 👋 how are you doing?
Thank you Dr. Chua.
Thanks for the advice
Thank you this was most helpful!
Spectacular video!!!
Very informative and thorough. Thank you.
Thanks to your clear explanation in your video i am now a lot better informed about the options available and questions to ask my eye specialist at my next appointment
Very well said and thorough. Everyone shpuld understand that the entire procedure is frightening and with some pain. Having experienced cataract removal in one eye, I decided not to do the other. I also fetl that anyone electing lens replacement have enough significant vision issues to make it worth performing. It takes long for your eye to set to rights, and any number of issues can arise. Too many CZcams videos seem to be designed to promote the surgery and downplay the issues from multiple clinic and doctor visits. These are designed both to protect the patient and reduce clinic liability. In my recommendation go for the surgery if you have rather difficult vision caused by cataracts. Do not do it, if you can avoid it or correct your vision problems with eyeglasses. Invading the eye for any surgical procedure should always be very carefully decided.
Thank you!
Thank you very much very well done

I have many friends who have had cataracts removed. Most say it is an easy, painless procedure and their results were good. My older brother had both eyes done, and one eye had a retinal tear (when younger he had a detached retina in that eye). After 6 months, he is completely fine. Another lady had problems with dry eyes for 4 months and is now fine. I will be having my first cataract removed in two weeks. I will have the standard monofocal lens and will wear progressive glasses afterwards. I like wearing glasses all the time, rather than having to have one ready for close reading.
@@judithdasta3969 Not exactly my experience. In spite of an anesthiologist present there was trauma and pain. Apart from a 'bluer' light, there was no improvement in vision. The worst thing is the drooping eyelid I acquired (they don't tell you about that) as well as my eyes not coordinating as well as before. I will never do the other eye. Too much a risk. I once had an opthamologist who told me never touch an eye with any surgery unless absolutely necessary. I should have listened. Yes, many come out fine, but not all. Oh yes, dry eye is now more of a problem.
Great video. Today I go for the 1st consult for caterac surgery. After watching your video, I am well prepared for the visit. Thanks doctor!!!
That was really good. Thanks!
Thank you for this very interesting and informative video! I'm going in this Wed for my procedure and i can hardly wait! My right eye has a very advanced cataract, so I'm hoping no complications arise.
I'm getting ready to get my cateracts and glucoma this week at NYCU LANGONE ..HOPE ALL GOES WELL
Thank you doctor.
Informative, very detailed and educational. Dr. Michael Chua thank you very much for these needed information.
Thank you, Doctor... for a thoroughly comprehensive review of cataract surgery. You address the facets and concerns very well, which is reassuring for patients.
Well explained.
Thank you for being so thorough, lots of questions answered. As I am going in for Cataract Surgery sometime soon.
God bless Dr. Michael🙏.
Very interesting! My eye Dr said I have them but they are just forming. I found this video to be so very informative. Now I have a better understanding of what I can expect. Thank you for doing this. This video just came in my feed. Guess I needed this understanding! Be blessed.
Very interesting, appreciate your time.
Thank you very informative 👍
