- John Daly wins the Open Championship at St Andrews with drama coming from Costantino Rocca, who needed a birdie at the last to tie Daly. When he duffed his pitch into the Valley of Sin, all hope seemed lost.
Yet using a putter from 65 feet, Rocca knocked his ball up the steep slope and then into the hole. He sank to his knees and slammed the ground with his fists in sheer jubilation. “I had no putt, but it went in,” said the Italian.
Rocca was spent even before the four-hole play-off, which Daly won by five strokes after the Italian took three to get out of the Road Hole Bunker allowing Daly to receive a heart-felt ovation at the last. “The names that are on here,” he marvelled while looking at the Claret Jug, “it’s unbelievable to be a part of it.”

As much as Daly is a rough and wild party man he still has deep respect for the legacy of golf
You sure? Lol they tossing money around overseas right now
What a dumb thing to say.
@@treybear8174 chill out
Daly had as much talent as anyone who has ever played the game.
That he did. I cant wait to see what his son does with golf, he can smash a ball like his dad
Daly could hit big drives, play these feather little pitch and chip shots, and putt with grace. He was full to the gills with pure raw talent.
Agreed..........
Indeed he's the reason I started playing golf , exciting player to watch .. but took a few too many risks on every hole ... But that's John, and that's why he's loved by real golf fans
it' s to bad he played his best when he was half in the bag
2 majors and Snubbed by the elitists for the ryder cup... I love jd he's a legend.
I think the open and pga are the easiest majors to win the masters 1 time had a winner over par the pga usually is under par but how tuff the conditions can be the score can be higher the us open is hard it depends on its conditions and the open the same depends on the conditions
@@jordanboteler8978 no shit
He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
@@jordanboteler8978 they have to beat the same golfers in every major
John Daly has a wonderful golf game, big drives, wonderful iron player, feather chip shots, and the softess feel around the greens. And he's playing a ultra ball, those things are hard as rocks!!! Lol
One of the best sports victories ever.
2 major championships, changed the game, won a lot of tournaments, one of the most popular golfers, man should be a HOFer.
@@Huddle_House56 i did not follow golf, but clearly Daly is a HOFer. his unique position - aggravating - irritating - sloppy in-the-end was part of his legacy. Golf exploded with Daly the " everyman " at the helm. well, actually maybe he is more in the " honorable mention " category. his legend lives on ....
Best hands in the history of golf. Period. And for him to hit it 350 with that technology is incredible.
I hated golf when I was a kid. I thought it was boring. Now I love to watch it. Haven't played yet but I will soon. I wish I could go back and play a game with my Dad. He loved golf. My Dad has passed a few years back but I think of him when watching these videos and when I get to see a game on TV. Thank you for putting this video up. My Dad would have enjoyed this very much.
Best game in the world no matter how good, or bad in my case, you are. Have a go and you will get the feelings your Dad had, guaranteed. Good luck brother
Hardest sport in the world.
That Reebok jumper looks like something I'd wear down to the car wash
I was thinking something similar 🤣
How JD handled the media during the 150th Open at St Andrew’s shows the integrity of a true gentleman. A golfing legend: John Daly.
Rocca put on one hell of a fight in regulation... a ridiculous up and down with a putter from the road, and a hell of a putt on 18 from the dump, right after flubbing an easy chip shot just to keep in it. Congrats to DALY, LEGEND.
This made me appreciate John Daly a GREAT deal more than I had. (having only started playing in '99 at the age of 52)
I started in '94 at age 47. Got good enough to beat my three younger brothers. no invitations to the Masters but some great high 80's rounds.
@@minnowpd I started in 2018 at 34. I am a golf course maintenance worker. Shooting in the mid/ low 80s now at the second hardest course in my state(where I work).. Wish I started younger. I am so hooked on this game!
John Daly might have been a wild one but I wish there was anybody half as entertaining as he was these days ! A lovely Guy on and off the course ! A true one off and Legend in his own right..
What an incredible, raw talent!! Forever one of my favorites!
I was 20 at the time.... I watched this with my dad as I was/am a huge Daly fan. What a great memory this is for me. My dad has since passed so this was special for me tonight. Thank you for posting this..... I appreciate it. Grip it and Rip it JD!!
Daly passed by Tiger on the range still practicing. He said why are you still out here? Tiger said "If I played like you I wouldn't have to practice".
"If I had the natural ability you had...."
Both are close but wrong..
He was sitting at a table drinking crown when tiger walked past.
none of this correct bro tf lol 🤦♂️
Never heard that story before😁
Daly. Natural striker of the ball. One of many unorthodox swings to excel at the highest level. Amazing, colorful life down a road with no edge lines.
Terrific coverage of so many great golfers in just 54 minutes...fantastic golfing under grueling weather conditions.
AND I WON'T TO THANK ALL THE HARD WORKING PEOPLE THAT KEEP OUR GOLF COURSES IN BEAUTIFUL AND GREAT SHAPE THANK YOU
You are very welcome
I work at a golf course part of the maintenance crew. Appreciate the shout out
Jack taking 4shots out of a bunker makes me feel like a good golfer
That tiger woods guy seems pretty good, he should stick with golf and see where it takes him.
John Taking 4shots of Jack
That young gent named Tiger seems like he can play, who knows, he might be the greatest of all time!!! It could go either way, 50/50
Man Arnold Palmer, what a gem. You can hear the pain in his voice knowing that he wouldn’t be playing anymore.
And Ian Baker Finch had the nerve to ask what the hell was Arnold Palmer doing playing in the Open. Baker Finch then went on to hit one of the lousiest drives off the first tee and Arnold had a little payback asking what Baker Finch was doing in the Open.
@@jameshoran8 What an asshole, lol Baker Finch is a piece of shit, compared to Arnold Palmer. How can one make such an idiotic comment?

If I was a pro golfer, winning at St Andrews Old Course would be the ultimate goal.
I'm probably the worst male golfer in the southern hemisphere. That's why I like it. This particular tournament is a bona fide classic. The ages. Palmer, Nicholas, Tiger, Faldo, Norman, Campbell... & of course old long John. Someone should narrate and produce this again because this does not capture the moment.
For sure. It's basically the motherland
I love the Old Course, but my dream would be Augusta National.
@@RicardoAGuitar Yeah, mine too.
@@jonburrows8602 ya nothing better than winning on a pasture
John's win was epic, but Rocca's Valley Of Sin putt to force a playoff was the highlight of the tournament
I was born on the 21st of July 95, so cool knowing I just hit the scene and Daly just won the open at the home of Golf
My eldest was born 24th Feb and he got the fright of his young life when the Rocca put went in. I roared, and he must have filled his nappy. Took about ten minutes to stop him crying!
Kenny MacM hahahahaha that’s awesome😂 I wish I could of saw that putt drop live. I don’t what of would of done!
Before the Open my golf friends and I went to the bookies. They picked various players. I put £10 each way on Daly at 66/1. They thought I was mad. ‘Will you take a cheque sir?’ asked the bookie. ‘Did I give you a cheque? Cash please!’ 🤣🤣 Thanks JD
The best Opens are the ones hosted by St. Andrews, legendary venue. I remember this so well, amazing achievement by Daly. Remember the pants 🇺🇲
I remember the blustery winds, which one must brace for. Daly confounded the winds, others were destroyed by it. There is no place like St. Andrews.
Nice touch by Brad Faxon to be there for Long John. Daly probably felt Rocca had fate, momentum and pedigree to be a Major champion. But there is Faxon probably telling him, "it is not over." Great job, Mr. Faxon!
Nick Price might have my favorite swing of all time. So compact and repeatable. He also owns my favorite quote. “How do you make more putts? Hit it closer.”
This is a super documentary into what was clearly a classic open
I was in the Golf Hall of Fame Museum at St Andrews about 15 years ago. I was trying to explain to them that America is not Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus or Tom Watson. It's John Daly. He represents America more than any of those other three.

I seen that live when a was 13 best memory I will ever have
Don't tell that to the wife and kids, right?
Daly is the GOAT. Rippin drives with a cig in the mouth. Legend
You mean he eats goats.
Also can't forget the time he teed it up on a soda can in The Skins Game
Ill never forget that year John Daly won, when Rocca flubbed that shot into the Valley of Sin only to make that miracle putt for a playoff. John's reaction was revealing not when he dropped his head in disbelief but when he immediately regrouped himself. He had a look of determination and confidence at that precise moment that I will never forget til this day. It truly motivates me whenever I face challenges in life. Thank you John for your golfing and for what youve done for the game.
The fact that he was like an #9 for alternate blows my mind! Such a cool story!
That was for the PGA Championship! His first major
Raw power and tons of control in that putting
Rocca from the path on the 17th, then holing a monster on the 18th from the valley of sin, not all opens are equal
My favorite daly story is the 8th alternate championship at crooked stick. Dude wasn't even supposed to play but got the call and came and won it all. Amazing
The win that makes him a Hall of famer..
You've got to love JD! He could get tanked up on Wednesday, go through your missus and you'd still be cheering him on come Sunday afternoon! 😂😂😂
I usually forgive a drunk, I married her. LOL
I guess that works for American ladies! My missus is not attracted to fat dudes tho, however good their swing may be
I remember watching this live and when Rocca fluffed that chip on the 18th Daly and his wife were ecstatic. When he sank the putt the smiles evaporated. Daly did so well to pick himself up from that
I was watching ABC and the announcer said...John Dalyh looks like he has just seen a ghost.
48:31 that sick sound of a muffed shot, I have heard that a million times
You're not alone on that one.
Such a humble man, true talent.
A MUST Watch Film If you haven't seen this you are missing out !!! #1 John Daly
I was visiting my dad's parents in ARK when this happened.. amazing!!! i was 6 and ill never forget it
The grandstand I was sat in next to the first tee felt like it was going to collapse when Rocca hold that put.
JD: THE BABE RUTH OF GOLF.
what a guy!! most would think nothing of him:-(
He loves St. Andrews with all of his heart.
He is a natural and also honest to himself
Arnie, an exceptional golfer up there with the very greatest of all time. It's more than that though, he was just great for the game...
"What the hell do you want me to say?" lol
The best mullet in golf.
Even though Daly near the top after round 1, you don't see or hear a mention of him until 31:30 of a 53-minute video during round 3. Oh well, if you're here to see John, start there.
The gong when Isao Aoki is walking by. Lol.
Haha right, a little fucked up. I cracked up at that too
Nobody makes tournament videos like this film anymore. What a shame.
It doesn't get mentioned often, but that 'Young Tom Morris' shot which Daly hit on the 17th in the playoff was incredible. I'm surprised more people don't take a similar approach, bringing it in low, right-to-left and around the angle at the front of the green, as opposed to hitting it high and risking all the hazards
It's a dangerous shot though because out of the rough the clubface can close and then your intended draw turns into a hook and then it will be gobbled up by the road hole bunker
Great Autobiography 😂 took life by the scruff of the neck..wild thing go!!
Everybody's favourite--he had no enemies
John Daly is a god damn American Hero!!!
This was so awesome to watch, the changing of the guard so to speak. Arnie bows out, Daly wins, and so many golf greats playing here. Fantastic video with great narration, Cheers...
"God bless you and this is awesome." John Daly
Love these official films 👍
The Claret Jug…”that” jug sat on my fireplace mantel in Fayetteville, AR for 1 month. It gives me the chills every time I think about it.
This was amazing. Thanks for uploading. Alba gu Brath!
Ernie els has one of the most buttery swings in the history of golf. Definitely my favorite swing. So smooth and still rips bombs.
Vaughn Taylor has the smoothest buttery swing in golf but it's difficult to find footage of his swing. He won a pretty big event in 2016, beat Phil. I think he won 3 events on the PGA tour.
I agree with the naming of Ernie Els for smooth, buttery swing. I'll add 22 y.o. Jerry Pate, Fred Couples (ANY time in his career), prime Tom Watson, prime Johnny Miller. And Sam Snead, from before my time.
11:38 imagine this 19 year old coming back the next time the open is in St. Andrews with a chance to complete the career grand slam at 24?
Who tf mixed this audio lol
Monster putting !
Michael Campbell had a great run for a couple of years, and still playing
10 years latter, won the 2005 U.S. Open and the richest prize in golf, the £1,000,000 HSBC World Match Play Championship, in the same year.
@@mtl-ss1538 yes, that was a great run
over the years, were so many big moments in the final round on the 18th, at st andrews, rocca's putt, seve's birdie put to win one year over watson, doug sanders short missed put to win, etc.. unforgettable moments
I followed the ball with John Daly and Jarmo Sandelin at the Scandinavian Masters, I think it was 1997. When JD was going to play on the first tee, he took an iron club because the first hole was a relatively short par 4. The spectators started to boo because of the club choice. He changed his mind and took out the driver. The spectators cheered.
Was there as well.. They started on the 10th tee at Barsebäck and both birdied it as I remember it. At least Daly did.
By the way, it was in 1995. The week after this Open win. Daly finished 9th.
That’s an all time electric pair, Jarmo Sandelin was not exactly a quiet player himself. Seems like those two had to have either totally loved or absolutely hated playing together, I’m guessing the latter
Banned for “exotic behavior.” 😂
John's tee goes farther than my drives.
I was there. Great great great touch for a big man !!
Michael Campbell had a beautiful swing, didn’t he?!
6:28 why I love this sport. The GOATs can also be mortal at a moment's notice. St Andrews will sure make a mortal out of anyone
I don't think golf has to b ended with tears but to know there's always tomorrow and the day after as long as the sun keeps shining an the breeze keeps blowing huh
A good pal of mine played in this. He was 200/1 so backed himself in the local bookies in Fife. He missed the cut
Lol
Was his name Colin Montgomerie? 🤣🤣
Great Champions win a first Major and see it as the start of their greatness, John Daly win The Open and said right let's go home and have the biggest party ever! 20 years later he stopped partying and suddenly realised....oh Shit, I could have won everything! 🤣🤣🤣
While other pros would practice in-between matches and tournaments John was drinking. While all the other pros invested in swing coaches and private trainer's John was busy giving the casinos 40 million dollars. Safe to say if John Daly had worked at golf ⛳ like Tiger 🐅 he easily could have been a top 5 golfer of all time.
Phil Mickelson (and Pete Rose and Michael Jordan for that matter) says hi. Daly isn't the only compulsive gambler in professional sports.
John Daly could have been a better player than he was. Just how good no-one can say.
49:12 the 1995 open championship will be most remembered for Costantino Rocca's putt over the valley of sin to force the playoff rather than John Daly's win

Makes me so happy Daly won this stuffy Euro open.
a flawed but great golfer.
For the young people watching, his hair was not in style. Nobody, except JD, had that hair style.
You obviously didn't spend a lot of time in small-town Canada in the 90s. To be fair though it was still 1987 for much of the 90s there.
Johns mullet was iconic
Rocca actually lost The Open with that miracle put in the 18th for a play off with Daly! His emotions went from abject failure to disbelief euphoria! He was never going to recover and keep calm to win after that! 😳
And that pipsqueak Pavin rooted against him in the playoff smfh.
This was a John Daly I dont think we saw much of again. Calm and in control and playing great golf. He could have been a golfing great but drink and riches ruined him. Alas. I would encourage young kids to mimic his free flowing style when he won his majors.
