Around 07, my department and a few others went to .40 because we were told that they "performed better through windshields." Turns out, that was the only benefit and a few years later Hornady would make some kickass 9mm that did just as well. Made the caliber pointless as that was all it had going for it other than that brief time the FBI used it

9mm is more popular in the LE arena basically for a few reasons. First it’s cheaper, second because we now hire smurfs. The lesser recoil of the 9mm is easier to get recruits to mediocrity which is now the standard in Law Enforcement. Third it is s bit harder on guns. Maintenance requirements are more. But as they say, you can’t fool Mother Nature. The kinetic energy of the 40 is greater and contrary to the present day spin, the fight stoppng capabilities are superior. I disagree that it is more power than you need. I never heard anyone I debriefed after a gunfight say they wish they had a smaller less powerful gun. I agree it’s going away, but not for the right reasons.🇺🇸👮🏻‍♂️👍🏻

The era of the .40 essentially got started by the 1986 FBI Miami Gunfight. This was always trying to solve a problem that didn't exist.
First came the debacle of the 10mm, the FBI 10mm Lite, and the Smith & Wesson 1076 aka 'The Boat Anchor'.
The .40 soon followed. So many police departments followed suit. SMH.
All the while, many of us were wondering what the heck was going on. I don't miss the .40 at all.

They claimed the 9mm and 38s they had lacked power. And yeah they kind of do, but they jumped on the 40 when a crucial factor in that gunfight was that they fired a lot of rounds and didn't really hit anything.

He's literally walked and has video proof, trophy evidence, etc. I'm certain we all have a 'battle-proven' buddy or two with some crazy stories, etc. I've never been able to verify any of it, nor are they putting up impressive accuracy/times when shooting during our sessions.
Of course, I'm talking strictly firearms handling/shooting and not mentality. Other men are drawn to things they want to accomplish themselves, and Ben is definitely a leader in THIS space. When he talks, guys listen.

I had a .40 P99 for almost a decade and during the lockdowns ammo was pretty easy to find and it was cheaper then 9mm. Once the supply issues got better and 9mm went down in price and availability improved I sold it for a WASR-10 two years ago. 9mm has got a lot better in terms of quality where I feel .40 hasn’t changed at all in terms of development.
I didn’t mind the snappiness of .40 and overtime it became a lot easier to fire.

A rather funny piece of Glock history. Gaston Glock was at Shot Show when S&W unveiled the .40
At the time, nobody knew who Gaston was. Well, nobody knew what he looked like is probably more accurate.
So, he just grabbed some of S&W's cartridges from their booth, reworked Glock's 10mm offering, and released a handgun in S&W's own cartridge before S&W released one.

  • @echo_research_and_development

In terms of future of the 40S&W goes. My personal sentiment about the caliber aside, There will always be a demand for a caliber more powerful than a 9mm that is not fat as 45ACP that requires a bigger gun with fatter grip. It just fills a certain spectrum of power not satisfied with other caliber.

A lot of people complain about the stock Glock sights. Just like other things Glock, they are functional. Also, I believe that Glock knows most people are just gonna swap them out for whatever it is they prefer. For me, it's Trijicon HD XRs. Why make the base product more expensive unnecessarily? Recognize the plastic Glock sights for what they are: functioning dovetail keepers.

Follow the money: 40 was just a marketing scheme (and a very effective one) by S&W to sell a more expensive cartridge to LE, knowing civilians would follow. This is well-documented; glad ppl figured it out eventually. Many ppl will still argue for the 40, but in conversations with these ppl (often relatively inexperienced "recreational" shooters) my sense is that they psychologically bought into it and are reluctant to admit that the cartridge is an ongoing waste of money. Generally better to just sell the gun -- we ALL make gun purchase mistakes -- and move on. But if you shoot only one box of ammo a year, who cares? -- enjoy your 40 and blast away!

From competition scoring stand point, 9mm is certainly better. However, people who chose 40S&W usually did not choose it for scoring in a competition. I guess some did when "major caliber" was a thing, and I am not sure if "major caliber" in competittion matters any more. Not so keen on that subject.
It all comes down to what each believe about per-shot probability of incapacitating an opponent. People who are fans 9mm pretend "science is setteled." However, the truth of the matter is that their entire argument is based on, "9mm and 40S&W make about the same volume of crushed jelly in a make believe block we worship, and we assert that this caues the same amount of bleeding, so 9mm and 40S&W must be equal." This is full of logical fallacies, and unverified claims presented as facts. Most importantly, NO ONE BLEEDS FAST ENOUGH FOR BLEEDING TO UNCONSCIOUSNESS BY PISTOL ROUND TO BE THE DECIDING FACTOR IN WININING A GUN FIGHT IN SECONDS. I do get that there are some cases where gunfight was lenghty in time enough to allow someone to bleed to death, but that is an exception rather than the norm, and in many cases it involves both sides getting carried to the hospital, which is not desirable.
My position is that there are factors involved in probability of incapacitation that are still unknown or not fully exploered which the 9mm worshipers just chalks it off as "psychological surrender" in a very unscientific manner while they claim to be representing "science."
I have my own video about is subject for anyone interested.

40 is an abomination. The FBI blamed 9mm for their training and tactics issues and adopted 10mm, a bear defense round. 40 was an attempt to make it usable and avoid admitting they made a mistake. You get more recoil and less capacity for no benefit.

      @user-sc2ye2rj6g Před 15 dny

In all fairness, 9mm does seem to ‘lack’ something ballistically, and going to a larger round for some extra oomph might make sense, in theory. But, I think 40 was destined to fail from it’s inception, being a bastardized version of 10mm and all.
I think someone who is pretty skilled would actually be able to handle a 10mm, and use it quite effectively, but then we are back to the training and tactics point.
