The interior of our 1971 Super Beetle restoration is coming together and we’re ready to get the rear seat in. The rear seat takes more than just upholstery as it is also can serve as a platform if the backrest is folded down. Our tech shows how the whole assembly, upholstery, rear seat board, and backrest carpet pieces in place. We also cover in detail the rear seat release cross bar for those that took theirs apart and can’t quite figure out how it goes back together, so watch and enjoy!

i purchased a 1965 vw beetle without the back seat. I found a replacement back seat but don't have the Cross Bars Shown on this video. where can i find the cross bars needed to install the back bottom and top back seat. ed
Your best bet is a junkyard or thesamba.com. The rear seat backrest is the same from 1965 through 1972. The lower rear seat crossbars are pretty much all interchangeable from 1963-1977.
Do you happen to know the size of the self tapping screws you used?
I regularly use #8 Self Tapping Sheet Metal Screws, I think they are 5/8" long.
I don't have a channel that the carpet tucks into. Is it on the jbugs site?
We do not offer the channel, no. A piece of sheet metal could be bent in a brake to make on, or you could cut down a piece of rectangular stock to duplicate it.
What, no horsehair? :)
Curious...did Super Beetles not come with the hold down strap for holding the backrest in the down position or did you simply decide to not add one?
We don’t want to vacuum out the horsehair every time someone sits down!
Originally the rear seat would have had a strap, we just didn’t put it back in. Perhaps in a future restoration we’ll use one.

The materials are Whiskey Saddle Unisede and Saddle Vinyl which were custom ordered from TMI.
Why is my lever not retracting back. I placed everything on right. What is the spring supposed to be be up against to cause the lever to retract
Watch the beginning of the video closely. The spring is braced against the seat from and then hooks onto the nail (is you are using the original VW part) or a screw if you prefer to swap the nail out.

Your best bet would be local scrap/junkyards, otherwise take a look through the classifieds at thesamba.com or on eBay.
Mine has a nail vs a set screw for the bar. Why is that

The brown interior would not have been my first choice. IMO it kind of clashes with the blue. Again, my opinion, grey or black would have looked better. As far as the rest of the build - it looks great.
To each their own. Grey or black would be the common choice, we wanted something different and you are one of two people that have said they didn't like it, my wife would be the other. I didn't build it for her though so I don't really mind.
