  • www.Viewtron.com - Watch this video to compare using a Viewtron security camera DVR vs NVR recorder. Customers often ask us what is the difference when comparing a DVR vs NVR system. This video explains the basic points to consider.
    Definitions
DVR (Digital Video Recorder) - Surveillance recorders for BNC cameras that use coaxial cable.
NVR (Network Video Recorder) - Surveillance recorders for networks IP Cameras that use CAT5 or CAT6 network.
Hybrid DVR / NVR - Works with BNC and network IP cameras.
    Additional Points
If Viewtron DVRs also support IP cameras, why would I buy an NVR?
#1 The AI software that is built into Viewtron NVRs. Not DVRs
#2 Support for higher recording frame rate 4K/20FPS vs 8FPS.
#3 You may already have network cable run for IP cameras.
#4 You may want to take advantage of the benefit of PoE (power over Ethernet). Only NVRs have PoE.
I recommend that new cable installs should use CAT5 / CAT6 cable. You can even use video baluns for now if you plan on using BNC cameras.
For existing systems that are upgrading, if your coax is in good condition and it is difficult to replace, upgrade your cameras and DVR to a Viewtron hybrid.
The video quality is about same if you compare BNC cameras to IP cameras. For example a 4K IP camera will look about the same as a 4K BNC camera. Quality more depends on the cable and the quality of the equipment. I highly recommend Viewtron.

On a nvr system Poe, if network goes down is the camera still powered and does it still record ?

If the IP cameras are plugged directly into the NVRs PoE ports, yes recording will still be enabled if the network goes down. However, if the IP cameras are plugged into a switch on the network, then recording will go down.

I have the DVR Swann 4k system which has excellent picture quality until you try to zoom and it only gets 8fps max. Will a IP system give better results in the zoom and fps dept?

Donald, Thank you for your question. Our Viewtron NVRs support 30 FPS at 4K resolution, so that will definitely help. In regards to the zoom, I assume that you are talking about digital zoom. Are you using a 4K resolution monitor? If not, that will help.

@@cctvcameraprosMonitor resolution does not affect picture quality when digital zooming. The enlarged area is cut out programmatically from the image at maximum resolution before placing it in the output video buffer.

So DVR is basically the older system that supports a bunch of outdated camera systems. So what is the point of even having DVR in 2022?

DVRs are for BNC cameras. NVRs are for IP cameras. There are 4K resolution BNC security cameras, so they are definitely still relevant, especially if you have a lot of existing coax cable in place that you want to use.
