Not a single Mid was harmed in the making of this video.
jamie c thatâs the best comment I ever read đđ
HAHAHAHAHAH, PERFECT!! I had so many thoughts regarding the mids, you have encapsulated them all perfectly!
c
Really? Sounded to me they were all killed off once Lee stepped on that first pedal.

THANK YOU!
Thankyou
Thank you a lot!
They missed the one I'd have liked to have seen tested, VHT's Redline V-Four. Pre-Amp guts of VHT's Redline 20R/40R/60R amp in a pedal format. Has 4 modes OD/Distortion/Metal/Redline (Djent Hi-Gain Metal).
Glad that most of you have enjoyed this video! I know a few of you would have chosen different pedals, or might have set them up differently, but I guess what this video really does is show that different people like different things & there is no such thing as the "best" anything - only what you like & what you don't! These videos are shot completely honestly - the pedals are simply picked based on what we had available on that day & the person doing the playing (in this case Rob), genuinely has no idea what the pedals are & is under no pressure to pick/like certain ones. If you like this style of video, we have already made 3-4 to cover other styles of pedal & our intention is to do more to cover more pedal types. Cheers all!
Good video concept. Itd also be interesting to try robs favourite pedal In front of different amps from cheap to expensive
Or trying to get opposing tones from amps, cleans from a diesel, dirty fender etc
Would love to hear which metal amps actually produce good, sparkling cleans. A lot of guys need versatility, these days but most amp reviews for high gain amps focus on just that, high gain.
CaptAnderton If you have one or can get it, you should put the Digitec metal master against the metal core. Pesonally the metal master sounds better than the metal core to me
Yo rob, Nice video! I'm surprised that the Filaments drive didn't quite stack up. The only pedal I think was sorely missing (and that Rob may really like) is one you've probably been hassled about a ton: Precision Drive by Horizon Devices. They sound killer for metal and has a built in gate if you're into that kinda thing~
Go to Andertonsmusic.com for info about "5150". I hope this helps.... this amp is much better for USA VS UK gear shootout.
Metal Zone, Miku, and a hot pink Ibanez plugged into a potato. This is my dream rig.
No no no....plugged into a Crate solid state stack from the 90's. Potato goes in the loop.
I own a hot pink Ibanez đđđ
@@JInfinity7 tater in the loop, and using an ABY to go to a Crate stack and a shitty tiny bass amp. Also make sure that Ibanez has a Floyd on it, but itâs set up incorrectly.
_"If you got all the wasps in the world, they wouldn't sound as bad."_
_"So, can you make it better, Lee?"_
_"Nope."_
-The comprehensive Andertons review of the MXR Fullbore Metal pedal.
Sahil Londhe actually it isn't that bad, i have one and it's awesome
enrique sabbi - please post a video. I've never heard a fullbore metal sound anything less like all the wasps in the world.
I didn't own one for long, but the EQ is pretty flexible. Turn the gain and treble waaaaaaay down, then find a sweet spot in the mids and push to taste. Basically, don't use it as intended.
The NotSoGuitarGuy To be honest if you don't know how the Eq section works it will sound like a fuzz but try it yourself, take your time and you will find it very versatile when it comes to heavy music, no mild crunch with it
You'd be surprised, treble at 0 turns it into a monster. Whoever designed the treble range was on crack, but the rest of the pedal sounds really good, you just need to know the treble trick.
Chapper's new nickname should be "More Gain Freeman".
Chris House More Gain Friedman! đ
lol
Aziz, gain!
How about "More Gain Friedman"
Genius
Its hilarious because Chappers is like 'can you please do X, increase X' and Lee's like 'erm yeah' - proceeds to randomly twist knobs.
In every. single. blind comparison video, Lee is absolutely atrocious at using pedal knobs. đ
@@devinftf Random example: Rob hears the BE-OD, asks for less treble. Lee turns down the treble, then IMMEDIATELY turns up the gain for no apparent reason.
The A Team riff was worth the price of admission.
The problem here is that you should've put someone who can dial in a metal tone in those pedals, because Lee can't do it, as it isn't his style. You should've put Rabea or someone else to dial the tones. Great video tho.
Azekiano was thinking the exact same. Could have helped for the more "option paralysis" pedals like the filament
great point - but I do like the non bias (WTF factor) that Lee adds to the mix otherwise you end up with comedy only comedians will appreciate
I somewhat agree, however, in my opinion the best pedals should sound good with almost any settings. I actually own a metal zone (stupid impulse buy from my early teen years) and I can get a good sound out of it.......but there's really only one or two sounds that are even usable. So I consider it a crappy overall pedal, that has it's uses occasionally.
Lee drove me crazy. Random turning and pushing.
yeah hes not all that great at getting a metal tone tbh
Now do it with Rabea cause he has a completely different high gain sound
YES. Guarantee his pedals would be totally different. He has a much more modern sound.
Hear hear!
Not Real Yes please!
Didn't they do this only about a month ago?
Berserker26 - Video or didnât happen!
Rob: "Make it less bright please" - Captain: MOVES ALL SWITCHES AND KNOBS
LOL! So true! With ML-2 "Could I get less gain" *Lowers gain then raises it again so the drop is about **3:30**-**2:30* (which is next to less than nothing, this thing sounds metal at zero.)
Less treble! Less treble!! -
- TWIST TWIST TWIST TWIST
Less Treble!
...Oh dear......
TWIST TWIST TWIST TWIST
-NOPE.
AHAHA
The Captain spins the knobs so fast he goes right past the sweet spot. Am I wrong ?
Yeah, it is frustrating to see him doing that.
Wishful thinking: A good dist pedal doesn't have a sweet spot all the sounds should sound at least usable
You got that right, sir.

Ola Englund recently put a Metal Zone in the effects loop and OH MAN it made an incredible difference. The pedal went from unusable to wheres my credit card I need one of these!
Yeah I saw that, sounded killer
Yep. Now because of olaâs vid Iâm getting one
yes,but Ola is unique.I saw him make chug anything!
Makes me really wonder how much better some of these could sound given the same treatment
The Metal Muff is just a clone of the Metal Zone with a mids control, fixes it entirely
True about the Metal Core. I actually was planning to get Boss Metal Zone on 2011. Luckily they were out of stock so tried giving Metal core a try. Honestly one of the best Distortion pedals I have got. Truely underrated.
The Diezel VH4 is the pedal version of the VH4 head they brought out a while ago. For me though the 5150 wins all the way sound wise!!!
I don't know why but 16:11 had me dying laughing.
"One, two, three, four."
*plays one note*
"AAAAAAHHHHH"
I would love to see Lee do the same kind of test with âblues-eyâ pedals and Chappers at the controls
Who else watched the whole video because of their undying love of metal?
And the fact I just purchased a Metal Core pedal and am waiting for it to arrive.
Not me.
I did!
I did
I watched it for my undying love of the Anderton's process
Whenever I go to buy new gear I always check this channel. Really good and comprehensive reviews and demos. Keep it up guys.
Just purchased the Boss Metal Core pedal based off this vid. These two guys are great! Thank you both
Lee's fiddling induces massive anxiety.
lol - trigger warning
I'm sure he knows what he is listening for and he can do that very quickly, but for the rest of us, yeah, it just is like,,, for f sake stop already, haha. Just let us hear a second of that before you turn another knob. He's not the only one guilty of this but it does kind of make me want to just run in there and pull him off the thing. I think he's also just operating at a faster gear than most of us are in when listening to these. So it seems as if he's in panic mode until you get to know him. Then it's just Lee, haha. I know I do that sometimes at work when I'm just in a higher gear and moving more efficiently flying through things and slamming things around a bit. Everyone else thinks I'm panicking and royally pissed off. From my perspective it just seems like everything else is in slow motion. At those moments no one else can understand anything else I say until I down shift massively so I can speak clearly with room between words and such. Maybe Lee should just count "one one thousand, two one thousand" lol, or something between knob tweaks. He's still my favorite though of everyone there, great guy.
Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal championed by CSG!!!
And every Swedish melodic death metal band ever
[Insert "ALL THE GAIN" joke here]
Brad James z Gold.
They should do a similar with CSG but all the pedals are metal zone and modded metal zones
NO MIDS!!
MORE GAIN!!
I was so happy when I saw Captain pull out the Metal Muff with top boost. I was like "Ayyyy! I got that pedal!" then even more so happy when it made it into the top 5. It was the first pedal I ever bought I wanna say 3 or 4 years ago.
I was the same way hahaha
Lol me too
2:44 is a beautiful moment.
A metal pedal shootout and in the pile of pedals you can see the damn miku, you know the video will be a fun overload.
Miku should appear in every video
John Osborne Top 5 Gibson guitars:
#1: Miku
(This is so funny bc my nameâs Miko... hehe)
+Jack Williamson that gave me a good chuckle, especially because I hate that thing.
One into one would be even worse. No offense to anyone that likes them.
Jack Williamson I want to hate it to but the original Miku video was hilarious
@ Jack Williamson: What happens is you break the Internet.
I would say like what they're doing is just right. A little here and there so it doesn't get old too fast :)
Iâm sure other people have commented this but: Ola Englund did a review of the Metal Zone a while back and found it to sound MUCH better when plugged in to the Effects Loop rather than into the front of the amp. He described it as sounding âbrokenâ when plugged into the front of the amp. Which is how mostly everyone uses it, and why it gets a bad name. When he plugged it into the effects loop he was completely speechless. It sounded great.
I saw that video and immediately plugged in my old metal zone in the loop. Pretty damn good. And I felt a bit ashamed over my demos in the 90ÂŽs..
It wasn't better then my dirty channels on the ENGL or Marshall though, fortunately. Or I would have been even more embarrassed.
He got it to work both ways, thru the front and effects loop. That's all that matter, clean or in front with some distortion.
czcams.com/video/nxRe99Tjlwg/video.html
Also try the Empress Heavy. Would've been an excellent contender in this shootout.
5150 is the name of Eddie's studio, the first album they recorded with Sammy Hagar and it's the California law enforcement call sign for crazy person on the loose.
jonny j eddies studio is more important
Idk why, but seeing Lee put both hands up like "Idk else to f*ckin do?!?!" when rob askin for more gain is hilarious everytime haha!
Thanks fellas! this vid helped me purchase a boss metal core and I couldn't be happier with it! I would say it's the best bang for your buck in getting that crushing metal sound. I've got a blues driver in front of it and some reverb after and it suits my needs perfectly. I don't have the cash, space or volume requirements for a 5150 and this pedal gets me as close as I need to get for rocking out at home. I am pleasantly surprised by how low noise the ML-2 is. I use single coils and this pedal gives me crushing tone with minimal hum. Thanks again!
First metal pedal I bought was the fullbore. I was drunk and ordered it online. At the time I thought it was a good decision.
We are living the same life
Replace âdrunkâ with being âhigh on crack cocaineâ and you pretty much have it,,.looks like weâre cut from the same cloth gentleman.
Letâs see MG Marshall mini stack, Boss Metal Zone .At the time it was such a great idea, Affordable Marshall stack, A Boss pedal for high gain metal distortion? how were we supposed to know they would become NOTORIOUS?! awarded for sucking the most **** OF ALL TIME. Ahhhhh.....
I pumped my fist so hard when the Metalcore was in the top 5
Itâs on my birthday list, canât wait! đ
I don't understand why almost everybody dislikes and laughs at Metal Zone.
I'm using this pedal to even play Jimmy Hendrix, Dire Straits or bluesy tube tunes, but for most I'm able to make an awsome metal sound!!!đ€đ
You need to know how to control it's immense distortion capabilities, high trebly tones and complement it's sound with adjusting tones on your amp!!! even adjusting the volume of your guitar makes a huge difference.
This is not one of those pedals which you plug in and expect to find a killer sound in 5sec. In my opinion Metal Zone can be VERY versatile, as long you know how to achieve it.
When I bought this pedal in the 90s I was very frustrated with it, I remember my ears were bleeding at the beginning, but in time I learned how to control that pedal and now I'm glad I never sold it.â€ïžâđ„
I've been using the same EHX Metal Muff for almost ten years now and I just can't get away from it. It is frankly perfect for so many sounds.
My favourite from these was the Ăberschall, I'd say. Sounded great.
I bought an Ăberschall. Sent it back almost immediately. Wasn't my thing at all and couldn't get a decent sound out of it. I now have the Diezel VH4-2 and a Revv G3. 2 of my all-time favourite metal pedals and I'll NEVER be parting with them!! Haha.
Challenge for you Rob and lee. Can you tell the difference between cheap and expensive guitar cables. Loved the video đ
Love watching this 2 together demoing the suff, so much fun!
I really like the La Grange OD pedal so rich and lot of options to tweak the sounds. The Empress also is a top pedal for gain.
This video was awesome! You guys should do more of these with different pedals like wahs, compressors and over drive.
There are no words for how much I enjoy you cats. I just want to hang out, play guitar, drink some coffee, and well... hug you two. No, that's not weird. You make my life more fun.
...Cats?
By Far my favorite metal pedal reveiw hands down. I have been struggling with what to get and you put them through the test. I like that Metal Muff a whole lot. I am starting a Deathmetal project soon and might just go with that one.
Best episode yet, you should use this format for all pedal categories!
âLetâs turn the mid offâ said every young high school metal kid with a Roland cube
I love how Lee is trying to change the knobs on the Metalzone to make it sound good. You can only polish a turd so much my friend.
Apparently some people say that it's more or a pre-amp kind of pedal and that people who think it's shit aren't using it as such and that the tones are easy to mess up as well so that's a thing
czcams.com/video/nxRe99Tjlwg/video.html
Entertaining to say the least. Thanks for your work, Captain and Rob.
Metal Muff was my first pedal and I have no regrets about it, it's great for a modern metal OD with a ton of bottom end and tightness.
I can't believe you cut the Keeley FIlaments and the Amptweaker.
Agreed. I have the Tight Metal Jr. and it is awesome but it does take some fiddling and the Captain didn't have the time.
kawikaphotography I have the original Tight Metal (the one that was replaced by the ST) and the BE-OD. I like them both for different reasons. The BE-OD sounds a lot like amp distortion while the Tight Metal is very versatile. The Keeley Filaments is on my list. It may replace the BE-OD.
And left in things like the metal muff
Totally agree with Rob. I have the Friedman but was surprised to find it a little bright compared with the Overdrive Channel on my Backstair HT5
Thanks guys. I am a newer metal guitarist looking to buy my first pedals, coincidentally my top two choices were the BOSS Metal Core and the Metal Muff pedal. This video made the decision for me. Keep up the great work.
Isn't 5150 referencing to the police code 5150 which means insane/crazy dangerous person? That's what I always thought though.
Yes, you're right
it's the name of EV's studio and i think it's street no as well :)
Thierry Driessen no, the reason itâs 5150 is because itâs an Eddie Van Halen pedal and that was the title of a Van Halen album
Ean Bruette Well duh, but that all stems from the police code
Actually it's from 5150 studio which was/is Van Halen's studio and refers to a section of the California legal code related to psychiatric detention
I was just thinking that you guys should do a blindfold pedal challenge. You should do a video for chorus, overdrive, and reverb.
Metal core has been a mainstay on my board for ages, love it! Well done Rob! By the way try a low gain vintage od into it as a boost! It sings!
I LOVED IT!!!! God that VH4 is a monster. I'm actually really surprised at how good the metal tone on the victory was.
Lee, you should really get in touch with Peter Diezel and stock some of his amps like the "Lil' Fokker". They are immense!
5150 does it for me.
Love this show and appreciate the reviews. Would you ever show us how your rig sounds in the mix of an entire band?
Absolutely superb video. Having it done blind made a huge difference for me on the validity of the outcome. Very pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Fun and well made. This could be done for all the effects too. The blind wah and so forth.
I'd be really interested to hear exactly what Chappers is looking for because he dismissed some tones I really liked and said he loved some tones I really didn't think sounded good. I'm not a metal guitarist so obviously we're listening for different things tonally but it'd still be interesting.
Chris Preece same here I noticed he hates the treble sounding metal pedals
As a death metal guy, I would look for pedals that are not fizzy or pronounced in their top end frequencies (bc that's just harsh) and got a lot of mid or upper mid bite for note definition with lower tunings and satisfying chuggs. And I think that (mostly) he went for that as well. Which is why I was incredibly surprised by the Metalcore bc it sounded very unpleasant to my ears. Not like the Metalzone but getting there.
Something is weird abut the video, no to the Filaments and Dracarys, 2 of the best modern distortion pedals around was a bold move, not sure if maybe Rob just wasn't keen on Lee's EQing?
I agree, i tend to play 80s metal and i would have chosen the pinnacle and diezel over everything else as they were far less fizzy/fuzzy.
I'm on headphones but I feel like I couldn't possibly be hearing what Chappers is hearing. But I'm also not a metal guy and I love fuzz pedals, so maybe I'm not remotely listening for the same things as him.
The Friedman and the Diezel crushed everything else. Chappers, you have some odd taste in tone man.
Wow, an oldie and very surprised by the metal muff. Nice one guys. Thank you.
I needed a fairly cheap distortion to front end my Boss Katana, got the Metal Core, couldn't be happier. :) Thanks!!
The Muff made it but the Filaments and Dracarys didn't? That is highly unexpected. Also I'm pretty sure sou can tweak the Palisades to do the job even though it's a 'TS' type pedal.
I don't use distortion pedals so I really don't care whether they are worth the asking price tbh.
I have some arguments to refute your points but in all honesty I'm only still here because of how amusing I find your utter lack of chill.
Wampler Dracarys should have made the cut
Aight at this point I have no idea wtf you are trying to say any more.
9:53 Lee humming "Pantera's Mouth For War"
Best video on pedals in a long time, it shows that price and tone don't always go hand in hand.
I had gotten tired of these videos and took a break for awhile. Then today I stumbled into this one. What was I thinking? These videos are AWESOME!!you guys work awesome together, and Rob, thanks for giving the squeelies a bit of a miss.
After you do this with every type of pedal can you make the ultimate pedalboard with all your favourite pedals from the videos?
The Metal Core pedal is my distortion pedal. I use it through a clean jazz amp from the 60s and get a pretty good sound. Could never really get a good sound out of the Metal Zone or DS1 Distortion.
Bandit Keith King of Duel Monsters Right on bro, I think it gets spillover hate because of the Metal Zone. I put a Jim Dunlop Wah in front (toe down) for a buzz-saw-esque tone which reminds me of Appetite era Guns 'n Roses.
Hey guys... loving the great videos you guys keep putting out! So I was wondering if there is a video to see if an expensive pedal through a cheap amp is as good as an expensive amp with a cheap pedal or just the amp channel?
By far my most favorite from you guys. Loved it.
Metal Muff is super versatile. A lot of folks don't even know its out there. I do hate that it says "
n/ METAL!!" on it... but eh.
Yea its very fuzzy but still articulate.
9:53 best cover of mouth for war
I just bought a ML-2. It fits my budget. Thanks for making this video!
this must be the best series every! think this really helps when trying to by metal pedals
You would have saved a lot of time if you had turned down the treble on the amp
What?! The Super Badass is great in my set-up!
Love mine too. And I set mine up better than lee did
You dudes are always on in my studio. So I subscribed! Love your channel brobros
The BOSS metal core pedal did sound the best and the price is so low too. I'm so glad you guys are doing this and you're doing it very good, you literally tried the crap out of all of the pedals good job! You saved me so much time by doing this and helping me decide which distortion pedal I want to buy. So i'm going to buy the BOSS pedal because i even like BOSS brand anyway and I also because of the way the button is easy to step on with your foot. I don't really like the pedals with the pointy button, they make so much noise like "CLICK! CLACK!" when you step on them. Keep up the great work guys and God bless.
I keep looking at the gorgeous headstock of the guitar. I just love the look of that dark wood. I have no idea why that sentence sounded dirty to me.
I wish he had waited on all of the pedals for Rob to call out adjustments before tweaking the knobs.
was looking for a metal pedal because i only have a not so crappy amp. saw this video. was looking for a boss but only the ehx metal muff was available in our local store. bought it. melted the faces and doors and walls of all our neighbors. thank you mr. chapper and cap! btw im saving up to buy a chapman guitar here in the philippines :)
God I love these longer videos! If you're considering making more of these it's a big yes from me :). Hell if you want to make em longer, as long as you guys are having fun (:
This vid actually sold me on the Uberschall pedal
It's called the 5150 because 51 people out of 50 will enjoy this video
Of all the pedals, I personally loved the 5150 all-around best.
great pedal along with the Friedman be od
5150 refers to the California law code for the temporary, involuntary psychiatric commitment of individuals who present a danger to themselves or others due to signs of mental illness. It has been more generally applied to people who are considered threateningly unstable or âcrazy.â
Van Halen Album, and add or grossly disorganized to loss of your custody... Adults only, then by law you visit a court of law and a judge before 73 hours passes to see if the judge will increase the time you don't have custody of yourself... 5185 for minors back in the day...if memory serves... A year late...
Honestly the 5150 pedal is goddamn killer.
Thank you sososososososososososo much! this really helps me with pedal buys, because there's not that many great stores around to test cool pedals so this helps much so that I can look up stores that have these 5 pedals :)
Great video guys. Thanks!!!
26:15 that feeling every time I'm constipated
*More gain*
I've had a EHV 5150 for a few months now and couldn't be happier, cleans up beautifully when rolling the volume back ( 3 amps in 1 pedal ), has a gate :), and boost ( sag ) switch, plus it does rock when you turn the gain down if you not playing Metal. YMMV but I can dial in a better tone than on the vid ( set all the EQ's at around 1 O'Clock ), also I prefer it to the gain on my Valve King Mini Head and I A/B'ed the VK against a lot of other amps before purchasing.
What an educational treat. I have some good leads on buying metal pedals now
"No, I don't like the order of the harmonics"
Lost it.
This chappers is such a memer
You missed the best of all the metal pedals, Empress Effects - HEAVY
I have the metal muff... it is not bad. The thing I like the best about it is that all the knobs are very sensitive. You turn the treble or bass just a little bit and it is very noticeable.
I believe the Friedman BE-OD and the Xotic SL Drive (has Super Lead & Super Bass variations) by adjusting/tweaking the internal trimpots.
All the FIZZ, None of the mids lol ear strain
Caloss2 Channel I could hear so much mids in some pedals.. and they're really good too...
That ds-1 looks and sounds amazing I want one
killer episode. this was so much fun to watch and listen to.
The MXR 5150 is well worth it!
I was originally looking for a Horizon Precision Drive but couldn't find one locally and they recommended the 5150 and holy hell is it awesome!
I fear Lee wasn't the best choice I think Rabea would've been better for the job no offense captain I love you.
81Garret
I think that's part of the fun!
5150 is or atleast was the LA area police code for a criminally insane person
