WILL IT CHUG? It's Monday! PUMP IT UP!
Big fan Ola. Need more dimebag videos.🤘🏻
Ola, why dont't you include the camera mic sound in these videos?
You Rock..pedal..?? not so much!!
MXR dookie drive would be cool ;)
Hi Ola I’m a really big fan 😑
As someone who has owned this pedal, the whole purpose of watching this video was to see his reaction to the top boost. Did not disappoint 😆
Same
😂
Hahaha damn accurate
The Top Boost is for Black Metal. You were obviously not ready.
Agreed LOL
I play in a black metal band and I use this pedal. Can 100% confirm I use the top boost.
Or hardcore
who is ever ready for it
no its not, IT WILL UGH.. it sounds like EMGs screaming from cheap headphones in my nightmares tonight
“It’s actually not THAT bad”
>has it dialed in to sound exactly like every tone he’s ever used
You're right, all his video's sound the same.
@@realeyesrealizereallies1176 yeah but lets admit, as metalheads, that a lot of metal sounds the same anyways.
I think its all on his Solar guitars they all sounds the same...
@@allsic the guitar doesn't matter much at high gain
This is not a problem, actually
any human being will sound different from the rest, and will sound, at least, similar in his entire life
Of course, there are individuals who can mimic an especific type of style, or many of them, but I'm talking about the majority here
It says "METAL RULES" Inside the battery compartment. At least it did in mine. Thought it was a nice touch.
It does inside mine too, they are legends for doing it
My op amp big muff has smashing pumpkins lyrics from the song rocket
Im gonna have to check my Micro Metal Muff and see if it says anything! 🤘👽
Hell yeah we a little cult or somethin!
2:39 Most badass metal tone. Best I’ve heard on this channel.
The one reason why he sold me on this pedal
Spot on!
Right?! Got one on the way this vid made me glad I bought it. Gonna see what my telly sounds like thru it 🤣🤣
In the loop, slightly crunchy and with a TS in front, it's simply amazing. Once again, those who say it sounds bad are those that are using it wrong.
its a pretty decent pedal but gets a bad rep, avoid the top boost and it does some great Metal sounds
1:48 *Sad but true starts playing*
True!!!!!
@@alee7275 but sad

thats what i thought xd
🤣
Lol I really love this kind of very high gain solid-state distortion sound. Metal Muff sounds much more aggressive and much harsher than any tube distortion sounds out there. Hell even fuzz pedals are not this aggressive.
Yep and I own both. And a fuzz wah.
Your clap at the start scared the shit out of my rabbit lmao
awwww
Bendinglez you have a rabbit in your room? Lol. I wish I had a rabbit.

Don't rabbits poop like every 5 minutes?
I honestly think EHX sprinkles magic on their potentiometers to give them like 85% more range than the competition.
Ehx is just bolder in designing choices.
0:49 That's actually some surprisingly good german.
2 years of reading German with 50% absence from class! I passed!

I understood every word. All you try hards, Please ask Ola for advice of pronounciation.
Am I right or is the missing part of the introductionary sentence supposed to be "... zu entwickeln." or " ... zu bauen." Which translates in total : The team of Electro Harmonix has dedicated themselves with total passion to develop (or to build???)the absolute best heavy metal pedal."
5:13 I could watch this on a loop for hours.
Maybe next pedal could be" joyo uzi " pedal i heard its good
JHS show reviewed it recently.
also the Joyo Taichi and Joyo Tauren are pretty good but they are just overdrives that go into hi gain
I have it and its awesome! Ola needs to chug it💪
Very good for the price.
I got one and for the price it's pretty cool.. bit like a fuzz distortion blend
i use mine a ton. my favorite setting for leads is just all the knobs all the way up, neck pickup with the guitar tone all the way down.
it just sings! 💚
The pedal sounds great when it's without the top boost.
It sounds great with top boost. Very Black Metal.
Eagle Warrior that’s not a good sound
It still doesn’t sound nice than
Top boost is not a “main” tone. Just for solos.
Aidan Bouw that’s why the top boost is for black metal
I’ve had this pedal For like 15 years. It’s slays for a black metal tone !!
maybe the boost ist intended for solos to cut trough the mix
Even without engaging the boost, the pedal still cut through any mix easily.
In that case you might want a mid boost though
Yeh it is intended for that, but trust me it’s next to useless. For it to be effective you really need better shaping controls separate from the main pedal, because however you set it, you hit that boost and it’s too much and you can’t shape it quite enough
I have the pedal and I can only think that the top boost would serve as a solo function. That's all I could get it to do. Neck pickup seems to work the best from what I did.
@@AcoskyFilms The way it works is that it sounds so shrill and offensive that the rest of the band have to stop playing to block their ears, allowing your solo to shine through the mix.
This pedal sounds incredible on my raiden special 5. The top boost goes well with the low end. It gives my bass some insane sustain so that I can do harmonics and reach into other realms of creativity.
Hello Ola,
Fellow german here. Thanks for not butchering our language!
Best regards!
sounds so dope when you crank the mids
I'm convinced that the Top Boost is there for people who love the sound of a solid state Crate combo amp with the gain & treble maxed.
Such as me
It's great for noise rock
@@becketthor6478 bruh
What's not to like lol
I've got this pedal and the top boost sounds terrible when engaged.
Yeah it's something you need to keep at like 9-10 o'clock MAX - the main reason I eventually traded it in was because I didn't feel like there was a point having a double-size where I only used one footswitch.
It's the reason I kept it: it's a highly specific sound I used a few times recording. And playing live it's actually really useful to cut through better.
But still, it sounds completely over the top on its own.
I never user the boost, just awful
@@mariog2609 also known as: instant dark throne sound.
If it's too metal for you, you're just a posing bitchass whimp.
It sounds best out of an Orange
This is one of my Go To pedals for modern metal tones. Once you get it dialed in to perfection (treble at 1pm, mids at 9am, bass at 1pm) its orgasmic! Im running it into the front of my DSL40 clean but on the edge.
When you were playing power chords towards the end, it sounded like GODFLESH!
No one here knows what that is but us.... Lol
Hey Ola. I know there're a lot of fans of 80s tones and I am one of them. I would love to see a video where you try to nail 80s tones with different gear and especially with a helix or HX stomp!
Man, that pedal easily sounds better than most of the pedals on Will it Chug. I have no idea what Ola's talking about.
You have to hear it in person, the whole top end is this shrill sounding fizz.
I have this pedal and it slays everything...but you gotta like what it does. The top boost is good but you have to balance it with the treble control, and boost mids slightly too...then it sounds amazing.
Totally agree man!
It sounds really good. Dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about
Nah it sounds solid state, over-processed and a bit naff.
I have the Metal Muff built into the Tone Tattoo. It's interesting that EHX actually tends to ADD features to their circuits that are built into the multi-effects units. The Metal Muff in the Tone Tattoo is like the Pocket Metal Muff which has VOL, DIST, and HI/LO/OFF SCOOP, but the MM in the Tone Tattoo adds TREBLE, BASS, and a GATE that you can adjust the THRESHOLD on so that you can do super-gated super-high-gain chugging. It actually sounds pretty awesome. When you combine that with the Neo Clone and Memory Toy built into the pedal it's a lot of fun...And it's 100% ANALOG!
EHx pedals are so underrated, especially the vintage '70s pedals. I've owned the Big Muff Pi, the LPB1, and the Small Stone from that era, and unless you're pushing them too hard, they sound incredible!
People who say they sound terrible apparently don't know how to dial them properly, and are looking for an instant solution without putting the effort into finding the sweet spot.
Underrated!? In the 90s most of the 70s originals were worth more than my car. My friend got his hands on an Op Amp Big Muff and about 8 of us came over to check it out. I managed to get an electric mistress and used it a single gig before it was stolen.. I went back to DOD and Boss stuff because no one wanted it
@@jaecenwhite2590 Still, I miss all my EHX pedals. What memories they made!
The moral of the story? Don't sell your old pedals.
Keep them all. A quarter of them will become badass antique pieces haha
Sounded great to me. I definitely prefer Distortion pedals that have their own flavor and style rather than try to imitate tube amp distortion, in which case I'd rather get a good tube amp. I could use that top boost for some dank Black Metal, solos, or for searing Death Metal tones that will haunt Ola in his nightmares! \m/
I agree! I have a great sounding tube amp but sometimes I want the all the tone to come from my pedals
A good tube amp wont cost 60$ thats the point of this pedal
Damn! This pedal was really cool. Ive never heard this before. Sounds radically different from a normal Big Muff.
I've been using Metal Muff for more than 8 years. It is indeed the marriage between the top boost and the treble that makes me love it.
This is the pedal that saved me from throwing my shitty amp out of the window, used it for years, still have it. Sounds way better in FX loop for crappy amps imo, otherwise go front of amp like this.
Aw man the sound of that 8-string... it's got such that wonderful goregrind vibe!
This was my first pedal! The top boost sounds like ass, but otherwise I love this thing
Presumably that's for cutting leads or something, certainly not a good rhythm tone.
This was also my first pedal! :)
My first pedal too and I still cant get rid of it
Yeah it's for leads and for playing in a complete mix, there it actually has to be quite extreme.
Same. My first pedal too. And still have it.
Anyone who have owned this pedal, they definitely know the volume knobs does all the magic, from ear bleed in your face thrash tone to ballsy thick chugging metal tones.
SO dayum funny to see you try this pedal. I've had it for over a decade now, and it's been a real help when I could have an amp with decent distorsion AND clean sound. And it's very versatile as well, you'd be surprised!
This thing is a beast in the FX loop, the top boost works even better imo
I've been using the Metal Muff for years. It's a great versatile, relatively cheap pedal. You just gotta have one of these if you're starting out, and want to have a bit of different ranges in your tone. It's even a bit similar to an overdrive if you put the Distortion at 6-7 o'clock, and can be dynamic to your playing
This pedal is good with solid state amps. Rotten thrash/death sound in a box. Top boost is for solos, I guess.
I got one of this back in the day. I partnered it with a 8 band EQ pedal and got a great sound.
I have the pocket metal muff and I love it's sound. It's now my main distortion pedal.
For me the pedal took up too much room in my board, but I thought it sounded great. I bought the next level down with just a tone knob, but it really needs the extra eq options. If EHX released a full eq version, without the garbage top boost circuit, I would buy it.
Done! Comes in a nano enclosure with a noise gate
They already did.the nano version has gate and active eq
I actually like a trebly, screamy distortion sound.
I bought one of those new back in the day, and I still have it, and still use it. It's a great pedal for what it is...One of the better sounding overdrive pedals from back then. Back then, they mostly sounded very digital (fabricated, as you said) and high-pitched. It has a lot of adjustability and you can actually dial-in a decent sound out of it with a good tube amp and good speakers.
The Top Boost part is garbage, but the regular overdrive is pretty decent once you dial it in.
It's funny that when you dial a tad of top boost and pull the highs back, you end up with a different flavored distortion. Actually a very usable tone.
@@mvyper yes, that's exactly what I used to do. Top boost enabled with top boost and dist knobs fairly low
It's a pedal you have to learn to work with but it's absolutely awesome. A knob tweakers dream.
If you’ve ever used a countersink on aluminum after drilling a hole, that loud annoying screech is what this pedal sounds like lmao! 🤣 But if that’s someone’s thing, hey go for it! Great video! 🤘
Ola reading german made my day, awesome pedal too!
I think the characteristics come from the big muff, thats why its different than the other metal distortions. Aome like it, some hate it, but its definitely a character in the line of muff fuzzes
Surprisingly it's based on the metal zone
I got the nano version of this pedal. I run my green bullet mike with my Seydel steel harmonicas through it. I also use it for guitar. Love this solid state aggression! Like a kick square in the head. Stay Metal.
I have one of these pedals too. I use it through a fender rumble and almost never use the top boost. When I do, the knob is almost all the way down. It does well for a thrashy black metal tone in like E-D standard. I wouldn't go lower than drop B with it. If you can find one for cheap, it can be fun. But I would not recommend paying full price like I did when you can get an eyemaster or boss ds-1 for 50$ and get some destroyed guitar sounds
This pedal has been my baby since I was 15 and 15 years later I still love it
I had this years ago and I downgraded to get the nano which I think is excellent. The top boost I think it was supossed to be used when doing solos but who knows, it is just ear piercing.
i am getting my metal muff pedal tuesday...im sold
Whenever you crank the bass on a product I can just imagine Louise in the next room trying to answer emails while the whole rooms shakes and everything falls off the walls and her desk 😂
This is my favorite guitar channel, most other channels aren't metal enough for me.
When I was younger, I had a friend that would run this pedal through a "Raven" half stack which is also trash. He would crank up the knobs of the Metal Muff pedal and god almighty it sounded like trash. I would tell him and tell him to dial in some decent tone but he never did listen to. The worst part is that anyone can look past the sound if you're inexperienced. So you had people in school complementing him on his "shreds" and crazy "lead" tone.
Sure was crazy.
I played with him too- in a parallel universe. He had a shit pedal going into a shit Yamaha amp- with full gain on both. Pure square waves coming out of the speakers! 🎸😜
@@GearGasms I was that fucking idiot in a parallel , but a decade before, I used play through....fuck man this is hard to admit..5150 block letter...whats wrong with that you might add? Indeed, great high gain amp...but...I was not getting my gain from the amp...oh no...............(pokes head from behind shield) I was using a DOD grunge pedal fully dimed (a volley of stompboxes rains down on my head)
On behalf of all these fools, I apologize, I dont know why we do it, I eventually saw the light ad noticed how great the Gain channel was, but it took me a few months, so there is hope...the tone morons can be educated
I would imagine that top boost helps if you're using an amp that needs it. Otherwise, keep it off. Sounds good without it engaged.
Really good video, that distortion is killer.
What a good monday! I have a metal muff, and actually you can dial good tones.
Between the "Woollet Jug series" and Ola's chug sounds "good gum don't oh" I highly recommend using CZcams subtitles.
Ola auf Deutsch ist ein wahrhaft wundervoller Moment...
its awkward to hear you reading my native language. By accident you sound like an infamous guy from the 1940s of germans infamous history.
Stimmt, aber es war schon lustig.
David Hasselhoff?
@@TheHexebus exactly!
The Top Boost is essentially a treble boost circuit similar to the old Dallas Rangemasters that allows you to compensate for older style tube circuits like the Vox AC30 that get darker at high volumes. Some modern tube amps still use circuits that get dark at full volume. So, you can use the Metal Muff with Top Boost into a clean amp to provide all of the distortion, or you can use it into an already dirty amp to hellaciously overdrive the front end and compensate for any treble loss IF you need it. Otherwise, just skip the treble boost circuit.
The EQ have lot of range, but feels like in wrong places for shapeing guitar tone.
Yeah the eq was the only good thing about this pedal
also sounds a little bit "fuzzy"
@@pablocaamal7718 of course it sounds a bit fuzzy, metal MUFF... big MUFF... EHX...
@@pablocaamal7718 it's a big muff...
The top boost i found to be really good for soloing with a band to cut through the mix. I use it with the top boost down on like 2 or 3 though but it gives a different frequency to push solo tones through the mix
Finally an honest review about this pedal. I have it and it's not worth it imo but every review says is the best pedal ever, is hard to find honest reviews. Awesome as always Ola!
Yeah I have some EHX pedals that I love but this belongs in a dumpster
It’s hot garbage. If you EQ it to play with a band it accentuates the fuzzy fizzy portion of the sound and white noise and you lose the parts anyone wants to hear. It’s like a ProCo Rat that’s broken.
For the price, its ok. And not every guitarist plays in a band. Some people just want something fun to play in their bedroom. This is a perfect pedal for a 16 year old.
I use this pedal paired with a 10 band EQ & it sounds awesome. Everything from vintage rock to modern metal if you know how to use it. The EQ is a must.
Nicee. EQ before or after?
I have the pedal going into the front of my amp thru the clean channel, and the EQ is in the Effects Loop. @@stevengonzalez2518

I owned 1 of these for years and it did it's job very well.. welcome to the muff world
Hi Ola, I've been watching your videos for about a month or so now, recently stumbled across one of your "Will it chug" episodes. Man I love that you do these videos man, I appreciate it because I own a home recording studio, and was looking for a new preamp/ distortion pedal, and later on this year or maybe next I am gonna purchase the diezel vh4 pedal, thanks to you lol. Right now I run a universal audio Apollo interface, gen. 1, and I run 8 pedals as of now on my pedalboard, running direct into the Apollo using an engl amp emulation from Uaudio and brainworx, also using an outboard thx compressor. I own the EHX metal muff, and I had been messing around with a plumes overdrive pedal running into a RAT and the rest of my pedals, and I wasn't happy with the sound, switched the metal muff in and now things sound like they should. Must be the combination of my other pedals and the amp SIM, because the sound is better than recording analog with a mic'd up sucky amp. I'm liking my new sound quite a bit and am going to post an album here soon so people can hear the tone I'm getting. Mind that I have new gear that's only a couple months old if that, so was still dialing things in until yesterday. Sorry for such a long comment, hope it's not a bother. Thanks!!
I had one of these about 10 years ago that I played through a little Blackstar HT5 head and could get some of the most brutal tones I've ever heard in my 35 years if owning guitar pedals. Most people don't like it because it's so easy to overdue it in so many ways because of the touch sensitivity of the knobs, but if you spend some time and tweak the hell out of it; it's actually easily one of the greatest high gain distortiol pedals ever made. It's kinda like the big brother of the Boss Metalzone that was kicked out of the bar for getting too drunk, trashing the place and beating the shit out of bartender.
This pedal sounds like a Line 6 on the Insane setting
It does sound like a line6..lol
Probably the same circuit.
I start a Channel "will it german?" and give CZcamsrs german Manuals and they try to read it. X-D First Episode:L Ola Englund .... and he nailed it!
Top boost is for solos. Kind of ;)
Might be some Pantera solos.
Definately 6 out of 10!
With the top boost engaged, it's a strong 1 to a light 2.
Such a great pedal and easy outa the box
If I had a midi controller, that'd be a sound. Ola Englund - 'Chug Chug Chug'
🤣
I too got this pedal. Important note that it's not exactly a distortion pedal. Officially it's the mix of a distortion and a FUZZ pedal. So yes, it may sound rectangular.
I agree, the distortion sounds like microchips (not just sometimes, always), but if one finds the good settings it's not that terrible. Top tip: don't krank up the distortion dial too much, because after three o'clock it only compresses (kinda like a BOSS DS-1/2). And don't cut the mids! My dials are around twelwe o'clock with the EQ and this may disable me from doing pinch harmonics, but at least it doesn't sound like ones and zeros.
I never used the top boost, because it doesn't offer any function I could use.
However the EQ is great, I can fiddle around it for ages and still wouldn't run out of new tones.
I play a Cort X-2, the signal goes through this pedal and a BOSS DS-2 (not engaged at the same time as the EHX, but the signal still goes through it), and into a VOX Pathfinder 10 (good starter amp).
Conclusion: The EHX MMWTP may be a controversial pedal. Some may love it, some may hate it, some may be like "Meh. It does the job." It's not cheap, but if one feels like it, give it a shot!
I actually have this and haven’t used it in like 15 years. I’m into tube amps (Orange, VHT, 5150, etc) with boost at this point but that was a pleasant stroll down memory lane without having to plug it in and try it out again for myself. Same opinion, artificial sounding distortion and the top boost is worthless.
i dunno about Ola but the sound around 5:39 really put me in the mood to menacingly walk in a circle in a VFW hall. Not everybody wants their distortion or fuzz to sound like a tight, well-oiled machine!
Another good demo, thanks. I would love to see your take on the 12 Ax7 driven Damage Control pedals. I have a Demonizer and Solid Metal and they each have their own advantages. If you have any interest, I’d be happy to ship over for your insight.
I love when u say HEAVY METAL PEDAL. Nice
Thank you for yet another helpful, unbiased review! I actually think this is just what I need to get my Marshall JTM30 into the right territory - i've already got the mids, so this looks perfect.
I have a JTM30 & I use the Metal Muff in front with an EQ in the loop. It sounds awesome! Everything from vintage rock to modern metal if you know how to use it. The EQ is a must have though.
you have to have the top boost on just a little or not at all its actually good for a Queen type of sound depending on the guitar as its like a built in treble booster you can get ear shattering glass shattering highs
Ola can you try an Amptweaker? Pedal, James Brown etc the “Tight Metal Pedal”?
Yuss!
LOL, he would never do it.
Yes! I made the same request...
Pretty sure he already did
@@zRavenlord No, he hasn't.

So what they did, in order to make it work with metal, is to make it something other than a Muff. Makes sense. 🤘🏻🎸😜
And it still doesn’t sound good in metal either lol
I know it's a distortion pedal, but I wonder how this sounds straight into the FX return, acting as a potential preamp.
Shitty. I tried that.

2:43 best part. You will thank me guys
That Metal Muffs sound does remind me of the Metal Zone into the Fx return, and the top boost on the Metal Muff is like a Metal Zone in front of an amplifier.
Mr Ola I haven’t been around in awhile. Hi. Nice to see you again.
Great! Now I can have the sound of my first shit solid state amplifier in pedal form for just 85€!
Seriously why did they add that top boost.
Not a bad pedal through a dirt channel.
It's a Fuzz. Not a HM2 clone.
Fuzz has always been Metal.

Not every distortion pedal marries well with every amp...or speaker.
Muffs suck
He use a mesa dude! A mesaaaa. And still sound like shit
@@elhijodelriff in some amps it sounds awful. But thru some amps, like the fender champions it actually sounds really nice
I have EHX Tone Tattoo (Metal Muff Pocket). And i love it! Even Fender Tele Classic 50 sounds very aggressive and true metal with it, and Ibanez is just a king. Plus on any amp it gives very decent near perfect (for my taste) sound. All default (12o'clock) settings.
