  • "Sukiyaki" was an international hit in the early 1960s. It sold 13 million copies and was #1 in the USA for three weeks in 1963. I'm playing a Guyatone D-8 steel guitar, E13 tuning (low to high) B, D, E, F#, G#, B, C#, E. Thanks for watching! 😊🙏😎 My website: www.playsteelguitar.com

Funny ..... I remember this song from when I was almost 10 years old, in 1963~!~ I was a little afraid of it, because it was one of the first times that I experienced melancholia from a piece of music,, and so I loved the melody, because it struck me in my heart,,, and now,,, at almost 70 years old,,, I feel exactly the same way,, and as I type this,, my eyes are very watery 😢
Goes to show you how children can, and do understand love loss, even at the tender age of 9 ~!~!~!~ Thanks Doug~!~

You kill me, Doug! I grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY, above a saloon, and spent many a Sunday in my aunt's bar. I heard Sukiyaki, Stranger on the Shore, Ring of Fire, Walking After Midnight, etc., etc., on the jukebox every day of my young life during the early sixties. Not only do these tunes bring me back, but they fill my heart to the point of bursting, as only music can do. It's that combination of melancholy and joy, and your creative genius, that I just can't get enough of. I can tell you feel the same way. Thank you so much, man, you are a gem!

Thanks Tom, yes, these songs were the soundtrack of my youth too. I learned to play guitar on these tunes, and I was especially drawn to the instrumental hits of the era, The Ventures, Duane Eddy, and all the surf rock stuff. I ended up playing the steel guitar, and now I enjoy playing these tunes on steel. I’m glad you enjoy them as much as I do.

Fun fact: the original title of the song is 上を向いて歩こう(Let’s Walk Looking Upward)however, the only Japanese words Kenny Ball knew were Sayonara (goodbye) and Sukiyaki (a Japanese dish which uses beef), so he chose his favorite “Sukiyaki” as a title for the English version.

    • @dougsteel
      @dougsteel  Před 2 lety +4

I've heard that story about the name change. The way I heard it, after the song was a hit in Japan and was ready to go worldwide, the record company in London changed the title to Sukiyaki... an easier title for English-speakers to say and remember. It was a wise decision! 😊

Thank you! Glad you like it. You're right about the song title. The song was a hit in Japan, and then the record company decided to release the song in the UK and the USA... but they knew that the Japanese title would be difficult for DJs and the public to pronounce. So they re-named it Sukiyaki (a Japanese dish). 😆 That would be like re-naming a popular USA song "beef stew" (in Japanese) to release it in Japan. 😕

    *Lyrics translation:*
I look up while I walk
    So the tears won't fall
    Remembering those spring days
    But tonight I'm all alone
I look up while I walk
Counting the stars with teary eyes
    Remembering those summer days
    But tonight I'm all alone
    Happiness lies beyond the clouds
    Happiness lies above the sky
I look up while I walk
    So the tears won't fall
    I cry while I walk
    For I am alone tonight
    Remembering those autumn days
    But tonight I'm all alone
Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars
Sadness hides in the shadow of the moon
I look up while I walk
    So the tears won't fall
My heart is filled with sorrow
    For tonight I am alone
    For tonight I am alone

I think the late Mr. Kyu Sakamoto is probably saying thank you from heaven.
It's been almost 60 years since it became a hit in the United States.
I am glad that so many musicians have covered it.
This song is the heart of Japanese people.
