  • Telstar was a #1 pop hit in 1962 in the USA and the UK. A perfect tune for the Space Age! The band was The Tornados. I'm playing a 1978 Emmons pedal steel guitar, E9 tuning. My site: www.playsteelguitar.com

When I was a kid, I had to regularly see a specialist in Montréal. We lived about 50 miles from the City, so my dad would plan his wholesale buying trips around my appointments so he could drive me.
Three songs were major hits at the time, so they always played on the radio at least once during our drives. To this day they always remind me of our drives together - among the few times it was just the two of us. (I lost him to a car accident the following year, so they remain pretty important memories 60 years later.)
The songs were Andy Williams' "Can't get used to Losing You", Little Peggy March's "I will Follow Him", and the last was The Tornadoes' "Telstar"
    Thanks Doug. Great rendition.

FAN-TASTIC ... WOW ... that sent me on a walk down memory lane 👍👍😎 First time I heard " Telstar"
was in the early 60's ... probably 1963 or 64 ... I was born in 1956 ... so I was 7 or 8 years old. My sister ( God rest her soul ... she passed away in 96 from complications of MS ) she was 10 years older than me and she played the 45rpm record of " Telstar " quite often ( among others, she was a Music lover too like me, guess that who I got it from. She even played the Clarinet in the High School orchestra and Band) . This was a
" FANTASTIC " rendition of " Telstar" ... I play guitar myself but haven't try playing a Steel guitar or Pedal Steel... but the Country Dance band I played in ... back in the Mid & late 70" and early 80's had a Pedal Steel player ( he was much older than me) ... anyways... I enjoyed this rendition of " Telstar " ... thanks for sharing! 👍👍😎

Thanks! Yeah, that modulation is in the original recording. It was played on an organ. I think it's well suited for guitar too.

Doug Beaumier . When the satellite Telstar was orbiting the Earth, I was in a van with my band mates travelling from the North East of England to London for an audition in Shaftesbury Avenue (Our version of Tin Pan Alley). We didn’t get the gig because the drummer was the only player who could read the dots!!!
      Memories.

Telstar was the world’s first telecommunication satellite, and this song was essentially an ode to American technology. I was about 12 years old when this song was playing on my transistor radio. Well done Doug!
