  • I revised this video to correct a mistake I made in an earlier version. My focus was off in my first video comparing these lenses so this video corrects that mistake and comes to a different conclusion.

I have the second version of the 50mm f1.8 E lens with its more metal and better construction rather than plastic body. As I never had the first 50mm E lens version I cannot compare the lens quality myself but there are lots of reviews online etc from people with far greater ability than mine who say the second E lens is optically superior. So perhaps there may be a version 3 of your video soon ……. Anyways in the meantime I very much enjoyed Part 2

Love your videos. But let me further complicate the issue. The version of the series E you are using is the original issue all black version. The second version of the series E, the silver version, is considered to be sharper than the original black one. I’ve had both. I did think the silver was sharper and I got rid of the black version, but this was some years ago. The silver is also better constructed than the first. It’s mostly metal while the black version seemed mostly plastic.

I've collected a lot of Vintage Nikkors and a few are 50mm. The series E 50mm 1.8 without a doubt has some of the best character wide open of any of the 50's and is very sharp as well. Love that lens.
