I can't believe after years this is the first iI've learned of local view
Haha yeah it's a nice little way to isolate! I use it all the time!
I just finished this tutorial and so far is the best I've tried for sculpting I learned a lot, thank you so much for sharing!
No worries Pao! I'm glad it helped! Show me your creation when you're done!!
Agreed! This was great!
Thanks Michael!

@@RussellMidfield haha yeah I guess so. Working on this cute bear now. I've been without inspiration for some time now. Thanks to you I reopened Blender again :) Keep up your good work. I hope you will get the credits and subscribers you deserve.
Oh that's good! Yeah I know the feeling, many a time I have sat in front of a default cube wondering what to do next, only to just end up closing Blender. It's always nice to get back into the groove! Thanks, the CZcams market is a little saturated to say the least haha but I'm having a lot of fun making these videos and I'm really glad they are somewhat helpful.
Thanks for the shout out, Russell! Also, I loved Tomoya's work, it really gives me some Ocarina of Time vibes haha!
No worries Cesar, you killed it man, and the accidental squidward totally made me laugh! It's true, you guys both have a great style that you can call your own!
thank you Cesar!! I really love your squidward too. He is looking absolutely majestic and bloody handsome!!
Let’s keep being creative and make more fun stuff 👍🏼👍🏼

Thank you so much! This has really helped me with improving my sculpting skills in blender
Yeah no worries man! I'm glad it helped!
very detailed tutorial !!! u explained every shortcut and many more tips. like shift to smooth and ctrl to invert, etc. love it
Thanks L'Artique! Yeah the shortcuts are so handy! Once you get them down it makes working Blender even better!
@@RussellMidfield i do have one question tho. dunno if im blind but i dont think u showed how to make the eyebrows. having some difficulty tryna make them on my own
Haha no you're completely right haha, sorry, I took out the eyebrow part since the video was getting a little long and I was trying to trim it down a bit. The way I did these eyebrows was using the Snap to Face method here: czcams.com/video/ZVegqKzMyPo/video.html. Basically, add in a single vertex, then enable Snap to Face with Project Individual Elements. Then extrude the vertex to make the shape of the eyebrow. Then face everything up. Then add in a solidify modifier and play with the Thickness parameter to get the look you want. You can add in a subdivision surface modifier and Shade Smooth to round out the shape as well if you'd like. Let me know if it's not clear!
@@RussellMidfield alright man tysm. il try it a bit later. rly excited bout how its come otherwise !!!
Yeah no worries, good luck! Tag me somewhere when you're done I wanna see your creation!
Awesome video!!
Thanks Mr. DW!

Haha yeah you know it! 😅
thanks so much , i learned a lot :) yay
No worries aspie! I'm glad it helped!
thank you bro
No worries man!
Very good tutorial. Thank you
Thanks Ali!
@@RussellMidfield I hope you make a tutorial like this one, about character texture painting, I mean hand painting not procedural texturing, showing how to create detailed skin bumps and displacements, how to create rouphness map, and how to add and control layers to the texture just like in photoshop or substance painter.
I think Blender should have a real layers painting option, instead of using mixRGB and mixShader nodes. These nodes are good but not exactly works like real layers, they do not hide completely the layer below. I hope you understand what I mean, and hope to see a tutorial to focus on this point.
Thank you again.
@@aliamir85 Oh yes, that's a good idea, I know exactly what you mean! I love texturing and painting by hand!
I was exactly searching for this type of tutorial about sculpting, thank you so much for your sharing, will try it out asap !
Yea no worries, I hope it helps! Let me know how it turns out!
@@RussellMidfield Btw before I dive in, are you sometimes using dyntopo aswell or only remesh ? If you do in which case please ? I find dyntopo way less intuitive but what do you think?
I only use remesh if I remember correctly. I find remesh usually is sufficient for my needs and all for more detail, but sometimes dyntopo can be useful depending on the context!
@@RussellMidfield kk thx :)
Yeah no worries!
Thanks for share
You bet man! Happy to!
@@RussellMidfield You have a very good expression. Thanks to you, I am learning useful information.
@ Thanks Erkay! I'm happy it is helping you!
Wowowow, amazing tutorial! Thank you! In general, do you recommend reference images when sculpting?
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful! Yeah, I think it's always good to have a reference while sculpting. Once you get more comfortable with it, you will likely find you don't need the blueprint images though. You won't always have isometric blueprints from the front and side like the ones I provided here so it's good to practice without them. But it's alwsys good to have reference images on another screen. A free program like Pureref is really helpful to organize them if you want to get fancy!
Hi Russell. Thx for a wonderful sculpt series. I was wondering what is your process for developing the blocking blueprints for your characters. Do you use concept artwork and then create the blueprints from silhouettes, or do you just eyeball them. Keep up the great work.
Hey Richard! Yeah no worries, I'm glad if they help. Both! Most of the time I just add a bunch of round cube spheres and cylinders that are at 16 arc divisions and play around with them. Thanks again!
omg if just i found this sooner
Hahaha well you're here now and that's what counts!
Great tutorial! A bit fast to follow along as a beginner, but pausing helps.
One question - how are you panning/rotating the view using your tablet pen? I didn't notice until halfway through but it seems way easier than reaching for the mouse all the time. Thanks!
Thanks Martin! Haha yeah it's a little quicker in terms of pace haha. I predominantly do slower stuff though!
Oh yeah, I have a button on the side of my pen set to middle mouse button (MMB). That, in conjunction with "emulate three button mouse" active in the Edit Preferences menu, allows me to hold MMB and press either Shift or Ctrl to pan, zoom, and rotate by moving the pen tip around the surface of the screen. Very handy and felt really intuitive for me right away
hey man thank you so much it was amazing tutorial and I learned a lot from this and now I will learn more about sculpting but i have a question that whether I should continue with mouse or I should buy a budget drawing tablet like HUION HS64 will it be worth it ? or make a difference ?
Yeah no worries, I'm glad it helped! I would recommend getting a tablet, a Huion HS64 would be a great start. In my opinion it makes a big difference in sculpting and painting!
@@RussellMidfield thanks
Great tutorial, I don't understand anything because my English is pathetic but I managed to do something similar anyway. Greetings :)
Thanks Adolf! Haha your English sounds pretty good to me! I'm happy the video helped anyway!
@@RussellMidfield I also think that the google translator is getting better xD
Haha lol 😅 Ich stimme mit Ihnen ein!
Also another question, for your scrape brush were you using any custom settings or was it planely default?
Oh good question, I believe it's default. I have the Sculpt Plane under the Advanced area of the Brush Settings set to Area Plane and Accumulate. That's the only thing that I can think of that might be different!
what are your shortcut on your tablet for blender, I'm using an xp-pen 13.5 pro, thx ? by the way great video
Oh my tablet doesn't have any buttons on it, I just use the keyboard for my shortcuts in Blender!
Great tutorial. Is the face riggable? Is it feasible for this model to speak dialogues?
Thanks! Yeah for sure.
@@RussellMidfield Alright, thank you!
The tutorial is very good but a lot of times when I remesh it crashes :v
Thanks! Aw damn sorry, yeah the remesh function can definitely result in some very high polycounts. A small adjustment between 0.1 and 0.12 for example can result in very different polycounts, sometimes it can take some experimentation to find the right voxel size.
my clay strips brush doesnt work somehow... i merged the objects and followed u step by step but there is only 1 part in between 2 objects in which i can sculpt with the clay strips brush. Other bushes work normally
Hmm darn sorry, I may have accidentally skipped over a part in my video, I've done it a few times before haha, even one missed click somewhere and it can make following along hard. Strange how it's just the clay strip brush though!
@@RussellMidfield what do ido now? xD im sitting here with blender open and trying to fix it xD i tried to fix my normals but that didnt work as well. Added you on discord to show it to you
Hahah oh gosh, I'm not sure what would cause just the clay strips brush to act in such a way at the moment to be honest! Ok I'll be on a little later!
where did the huge eyebrowws come from at 21:27 ? the seem to have appeared out of nowhere and not sure how i should go about putting them on
Oh yeah sorry I ended up cutting that part out to make the video a little shorter. I made them by adding a single vertex, then turning on Snap to Face. In Front Orthographic view you can then move the single vertex onto the brow. Then you can extrude the vertex into a rectangular shape over the brow. Once you have that, you can then add a Mirror modifier, and a Solidify modifier. You can adjust the thickness to your liking. Shade Smooth and a Subdivision Surface modifier will help make it look a little better too.
@@RussellMidfield no worries man! Thanks so much for the awesome tutorial and the quick reply, I will do what you said and see how It turns out.
Also...if you happen to have time and can point me to a video that you've made or someone else made about how to export finished models like this in .glb/gltf format and have everything keep its look that would be amazing! I'm trying to make NFT's and whenever I export in that format everything disappears ie; colour, mirrored objects.
I'm not sure what step I need to do to "finalize" the model and lock it all in.
If you could help that'd be amazing but by no means go out of your way. Thank you again! 😀 ill be watching more of your videos to learn for sure!
THX How many polygons for mobile game for 30/60 FPS?
Mobile games tend to be lower in polycount, I have seen anywhere from as low as 500 up to 3k tris, depending on how many are on screen at one time. Textures between 256x256 and 1024x1024. Lots of factors to consider though!
Really nice tutorial. I've subscribed too. I have an issue. At 7:54 my clay strips brush is a square and not smooth like yours. What could be the problem? Please help
Thanks eso! Mine is a square too, are you using a tablet with pressure sensitivity?
@@RussellMidfield Thanks for the speedy reply. I use a mouse though. Maybe I might invest in a tablet later on. Do you think I can further develop this model by Adding fur?
Yeah that would be a great idea! Blender has a nice hair/fur feature that is easy to use
What drawing tablet do you use and how do you like it?
I use a Huion Kamvas 20, its awesome, I really like it. I had some issues with the pen breaking, but was able to fix it relatively easily myself. Other than that it's been great. No problems with drivers. Great value in my opinion. For the same price I was not able to get anything even close in terms of size or features. I recommend it!
Not sure how to rotate the eyeballs like you did in video. When I go to rotate, it spins both eyeballs around my axis point.
You can change the origin point of the eyeball by using the 3D cursor and Set Origin option in the Object menu!
@@RussellMidfield thank you so much Russell!!
somehow all my brushes dont add, they substract and i have to press strg/ctrl while i paint to build on top, normally when i sculped it worked the other way
Oh weird haha! Maybe in the Active Tool and Workspace Settings tab on the right (little screwdriver and wrench), under Brush Settings, you have the Direction toggle set to Subtract instead of Add. That's the only thing I can think of that could cause a permanent switch like this.
@@RussellMidfield when its on add it subtracts and when its on - it adds :oooooo idk what happend
Lmao remesher killed dynomesh! Its been a long time since I've seen a tutorial even mention dynomesh
Haha yeah I prefer remesher myself, but dynamesh has its place too!
im having a hard time combining the legs with the body. They're joined and the same color but when i go to sculpt, it only sculpts the legs. It is not combined with the body. I cant figure out how to get them to merge!
Very strange! So you have done the Ctrl+J on the body and the legs, and they are one object over on the right side layer panel?
@@RussellMidfield thanks for the quick reply, i figured it out. The symmetry modifier tool wasnt fully applied to the object! after i clicked apply i was able to join the pieces.
Ah that's awesome! I'm glad to hear!
so im having a problem when i remesh nothing happens pls help me
Ok, what steps are you taking to perform the remesh?
@@RussellMidfield so i hit the eye drop click on the model do .1 hit remesh and nothing happens
What is the voxel size when you use the eye dropper? You have to make sure whatever voxel size you enter is lower than what the eye dropper says. Have you tried entering lower numbers? 0.05? 0.02? Or even lower?
@@RussellMidfield like 0.235476 idk
Ok. 0.1 won't make a huge difference then. Try something lower like 0.02 if you are wanting to add more detail.
why dont you use dynamic topology?
Mmm just a personal preference I suppose. I find that it becomes difficult rather quickly to add detail with dyntopo which is probably the first thing that comes to mind. I do find that it's great for adding in rough shapes though for sure in the blockout stage. The voxel method I feel like works well in both the blockout and the detail phases which is a little bit more streamlined to me.
@@RussellMidfield I see. I find it more fun to be ordered chaos it gives a the vibe I want for it
Oh yeah that's true, it definitely has a nice look to it in itself!
@@RussellMidfield definately
Voxel Remesh doesn't appear on the screen
had to scroll the menu
Darn that's weird! Make sure you are in Sculpt mode!
@@RussellMidfield I found it thanks
Nice!
i was wondering how is it possible that once youre on remesh detail 0.036 your brushes show soo much detail yet for me 0.036 is still low detail on brush, is it your settings or is it just preparing the original shapes?
It depends on the scale of your model, if your model is much smaller than mine then you will need a smaller voxel size. It's not unusual to have a tiny voxel size of like 0.005!
One more like for 666
