"Dépêchons nous messieurs, il n'y a pas une minute à perdre !" On prête cette citation à Rossini lui-même avant une représentation de son Guillaume Tell qu'il dirigeait, ironisant sur la longueur imposante de ce chef d'œuvre. Mais quel bel opéra !

Et les cymbales, pourtant essentielles à cet opéra, sont utilisées seulement dans l’ouverture, alors qu’essentielles à l’œuvre entière…

Obviously, they've heard this performance, and continue to mourn the miserable way so much of the dance and instrumental music has been butchered out of existence. What did they save, 16 minutes worth of music?
And for all his vaudevillian grimacing and snarling, Hampson is as dull as a lukewarm pan of dishwater.
The Pas de Soldats is the worst thing I've ever seen. Grow up!!!
