That painting is wonderful! I love what you did with the scene - elevating the hills in the distance, bringing in such vivid colors into major contrasts of lights and darks and warms and cools. Love it!
Great video Michael. I always find it interesting how the intense sunlight in the "winter" looks so much different than high summer sunlight. A lower sun will do that. I like your explanation of the larger shapes to smaller shapes and just concentrating on the shapes themselves, rather than painting "things" (my words). When I paint objects that need not be terribly defined, I tend to still want to know what it is I am painting. It has happened where I've done a painting and only realized after I've painted the shapes, what it actually is, largely revealed by the context. I really enjoy your urban landscapes.
This painting amazes me . It’s great how you can paint structure this good free handed . What an excellent color scheme , the distant mountains correlate perfect with the buildings greens , the warm colors on the structure catches the eye with the red awning . This is a top 5 of my favs
You really do a fantastic job of capturing the intense Sunlight contrasting with the deep shadows. Love what you did with the distant hills too...sort of Cezanne-esque. Beautiful work!
Love this!!! Great advice on breaking down to simple shapes only, I often struggle wanting to put in too much detail. You brought in detail without having to put in detail!! LOL!! Fabulous!!
Wow less is more our mind fills in the rest ; the cars are the best example of less is more Thank for sharing please share more of your painting techniques
This street corner is interesting. The Victorian buildout windows look so good. It’s amazing what you do with just strokes of the brush. Then dabs are details. You are not generous with the details but it works. The right side has most of my attention and I love this painting for the way the color works in complimenting the composition. Beautiful.😊👍🏻
Bravo! The reds and greens really pop! It is amazing what square and rectangular patches of paint can do when expertly applied. Abstract at one foot; detailed at five feet. Nice feat! (Pun intended.) Quite and illusionist. Really fine work.
You have inspired me to try plein air painting myself, I did my first one this weekend, but it’s about 10 degrees in Minnesota so it was a major struggle, but even though the painting didn’t turn out very well, I had so much fun that I can’t wait to do it again once it warms up a little
The mantra “general to specific” is one we all know but how often do we not do it! This shows what happens when you follow the rules and get it right. Lovely job, well done.
Hi Michael. just wonderful, also love the effort you put into your editing, showing close-ups of your paint application and color mixing. Your choices for light and shadow so well explained, overall wonderful video. I'm a big fan of your work and floater frame tutorials too. Thanks for all you do. Happy Holidays!
Thank you! Love how you broke down what you were doing and the load the brush and mark. I love how the store came out without overthinking all of the detail. That is my problem, I always try to add to much minute detail. Thanks for all of the great explanation!

Peace and love..Suz What ☮️💚🌻
Beautiful piece Mike. Would love to see a burrito in the next one, maybe a bowl of oats or a vegan banana with peanut butter. I live for the food moments in your vlogs😁
All of your paintings are an eye opening lesson in reducing shapes and colours to their base qualities which is always fun to witness the process which you so clearly explain.. There is an appeasing and attractive minimalist character to all of your paintings. Thanks for sharing with us your awesome talent.
Michael, looking again, attempting to understand more , “” the elevated foreground, a unique co-existence of bright light, dark shadow, filled with color, see nearby, in the boughs of the tree, ‘ a queen of light and shadow, appearing as both, she admires the concentrations of what you’ve discovered, looking on, she sees both, and you. Special beauty in this painting Michael, (I’m sure : )
Love the odorless mineral spirits. I’m doing watercolours now, it’s such a vibe. I paint more like an oil painter though, with layers. I use a stencil to start in pencil/ pen then add to the scene.Loving it. You have helped me a bunch❤️🇿🇦
Very nice...the lower building had me worried but it worked out...I like the way you make the painting appear to be detailed but upon closer inspection only darks and highlights on the cars.
From my perspective, you're a master colorist! I love your narrative providing the names of each color and combinations. As an artist who hasn't painted since 2008, just hearing the names of each color brings back so many wonderful memories that for me, is like rocketing into space and beyond. A little dramatic but so true to who I am. The city location for me was like being squeezed in a crowed event compared to your open beach locations with the sounds of the waves and the seagulls. I would love to see you paint a still life or a portrait of someone dressed in costume juxtaposed on location some where. just say'in .. Sue from Virginia
Love that POV palette. You are really fight there for place to plein air, not easy in urban area. Excellent work. Thank you for your time and skill sharing.
Really beautiful painting, sir! I know nothing about your challenges, but I do know that you made really a great piece of art. You have your own style and technnique and I like that. Fantastic job! Greetings from the EU! Btw. Today, I'm the 200th like. lol
"load the brush make a stroke"...repeat... can't be emphasized enough...also how you did the detail on the cars with simple dots ... amazing how such a gesture means so much...
It's a beautiful work, very well solved, the brightness on the atmosphere was really dulling the colors so they were difficult to transfer to the painting.
I really enjoy your videos. How do you get the prespective so well done when painting plein air? I have a problem with taking in too much area or not enough area...lol. Is it just practice? It amazes me how well you do this... Thanks for sharing your talent! We're lucky to have you! You are so inspiring!
Excellent painting! I’m always attracted to those little corner shops too. I was wondering if you could tell me what you do to your panels for the ground? Is it just gesso? If so, what brand and how many layers? I can’t seem to create a surface that isn’t too absorbent or too slick. Thank you!
He uses gesso with pumice added in. Ok I found one of his explanations it’s in “Secrets Revealed *art stuff, no tea” gives his whole process and a medium recipe. Hope this helps!
Love it. Very loose yet full of definition. Why not a very loose hint of pedestrians? Just to give it that real place content as opposed to the opposite. Cheers.
Yeah, three brush strokes and you got a person sorta, two for a dog on a leash. I can understand why you might be adverse to having people because of how the eye is drawn to them but they do add heaps of interest especially on beach scenes. Love watching you paint. Good to see a new current one. Keep posting please. 👍
@@chamberlainpaintings My bro just came back from Ireland where he surfed with a soft top. 🇿🇦He usually surfs with Al Merrick boards if he is buying in the States🍿🍕🌈
Love how you block in and build color not getting too worried about detail.
Simplifying by focusing on big shapes instead of the details is one of the biggest challenges in painting. Squinting helps!
I see Hopper’s influence in your paintings particularly in your cityscapes. Very nice.
Those colours of the foliage against the windows - lush! Love your work & your channel, thank you for sharing the process so well!

It's really great. I love it☺️ I really like the pictures that are not drawn in too much detail because they seem more characteristic to me.
