- I once used Jack Dempsey's book from 1946 on explosive punching to teach a class on this drop step technique at a University.
You can find my long form videos and a deeper discussion of boxing here: advanced.lyteburly.com.
This is *the* most accurate demonstration of Dempsey's punch.
Thank you Wilson this is the best example of the falling step on CZcams.
thank you
Its all about body weight! Jack was the best at delivering it. Great video
As a professional boxer, i have never looked at shoulder roll like that. Thanks coach for that one

love how you made the comparison to Xingyi.
I agree ... joining the JACK DEMPSEY FALLING STEP with XING YI YI QUAN FA JING SHADOW BOXING is my goal
Good on you buddy for taking the time to show people how important it is to always prepare in doing everything correctly. Boxing is an art and if we get into bad habits at the start it is much smarter to reset and correct our ways than to have failure much farther down the line.
This guy is authentic.
I train in Karate for 5 years before learning about this from Jack Dempsy’s book.
Then I developed knockout power. It took about two years after learning this.
Chapters Seven and Eight explain this.
It takes a while to grasp (grok) this but it is worth it.
Knockout Power has nothing to do with muscles, fitness, or macho attitude.
it is about Body Weight in Motion and Kinesthetic Awareness.
I find it useful to study Jack Dempsey Tapes, Chuck Liddell tapes, and Mike Tyson tapes.
Muhammad Ali was great but I believe that if Prime Mike Tyson vs Prime Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson would have won!!
Many people will disagree with this.
Also people like talking about Randy Couture, Randy Courture ( who was great )
BUT. who won two out of three ?....
CHUCK LIDDELL - The ICEMAN. !!
Perhaps he wasn’t as versatile a fighter as Randy BUT
CHUCK LIDDELL did the very basic simple stuff better and had better targeting !!!
Also please remember that. Jack Dempsey learned from bare knuckle boxers when boxing was more a war than a sport.
If you can not win a fight within two minutes than you shouldn’t be in that fight because the other person is better.
There are always better and always worse fighters than you so why fight for your life unless you have to.
Anyway, this Mr. W. P. ,in my opinion, is authentic
and has deep understanding.
Thank you,
Signed. ‘Fred’
PS: O’Sensei Peter Urban ( RIP ), the Founder of American GoJu Ryu is worth checking out.
Also if you like elbows, it is good to study Ken Florian of UFC .
Cheers
Canada.
thanks for the kind words, research is on going
Thank you sir! 😎🫶🏾My favorite punch to throw, the Dempsey roll right hook to the body!
Great demonstration of the infamous Dempsey punch. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I was wondering why my previous attempts at Dempsey drop step jab didn't feel right and realized that my back was too erect; a little crouching helped my drop step a lot. Subscribed
That shoulder to the plexus. Oh yeah
Another interesting book to read is the book of five rings from miyamoto musashi. It’s more of a general strategy book but it has a lot of solid info and goes into detail on stuff that’s normally overlooked when talking about strategy and technique. Really cool stuff tho W.P!
very insightfull, thanks
Excellent!
I learned that Dempsey roll by myself
Best example I’ve seen
As someone who read the book as well I actually recommend reading it ^^
Me too
@@boxingwithwilsonpitts8055 yay ^^
THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. Please, if possible, explain more about this technique.
subordinate the use of your arm to your body and legs
SOLID Coach!
Amazing technique and example of Xing yi quan. Am surprised a lot of boxers don’t know they are using Kungfu techniques.
very similar method of stomping the foot to generate power
Am surprised a lot of Kungfu practitioners don’t know they are using boxing techniques.
@@folksurvival there's only so many ways to use two arms and two legs efficiently
@@boxingwithwilsonpitts8055 Exactly.
Same as oi zsuki, and gyaka zsuki in Japanese style.
I like that shoulder roll
Thank you, you're wise, I watch your videos closely
There's alot to learn from this channel
What dempsey ment with the shoulder wirl was to turn your fist horizontal
Wow! That is some power punch right there! Amazing. How much that bag weighs? That was a hell of a punch!
My guess 40lbs
👍👍
Was that Spartaj Warrior at the Begining?!
Dang, look how far the bag moves.
Its not the 700 lb bag.🤣
Very Tai Chi like, though many are not aware or would be in denial about it! lol. Good power.
Is this the “ Dempsey Roll” ?
😊
Drop power is what the chinos call it. Kids use it instinctively when they pump a swing. Volleyball spikers use it when they swing on the way down. Good servers use this in tennis.
Mr. Wilson Pitts! You were Lyte Burley's teacher, no?
I taught him a little boxing in the park in NYC many years ago, I didn't teach him 52 blocks
The are some punches in Asian martial arts that teach this technique. Without the drop step that particular punch is done incorrectly.
Is that the special 10 lb. bag for 5 year olds?
65 year olds
Doesn't matter, the principle and technique is the same regardless of the weight of the bag.
How heavy is the bag?
it's not very heavy
@@boxingwithwilsonpitts8055 Exactly! Do it with a bag with weight and show people how it’s really done.
@@billybrown00 you show them "how it's really done" I have too much thumb and wrist pain to hit anything hard anymore. I'm just trying to illustrate what I was talking about
Box sings....
Tekken
What’s that bag stuffed with, your couch cushions? 😂
🤪 😂
that is not a good basic boxing skills and posture this time.that's not applicable.Boxing coach Rey of Davao City,Phils.
pay attention coach, I'm demonstrating a non boxing technique as part of a larger conversation about old school boxing technique [ which no one uses in the modern era] and a Chinese martial art developed in the 1700's.
The drop step or lead jolt definitely does work and turns your jab into a power punch...you might have not have seen it but there are some pro fighters who use this technique
