Gene Wilder hated doing this scene because he despised the idea of yelling like this at a child and crushing his spirit. What a sweetheart.
Peter Ostrum said Gene Wilder wanted to warn him about this scene before filming, but the director told Wilder not to, as to get a genuine sad reaction out of the character of Charlie.
Later, Gene apologized to Ostrum about having to get mean
@@bradyryan5105 I actually love when they do that in film. In The Office, during Michael’s final episode before leaving the show, they didn’t tell Steve Carell about them singing a song for him at the end. This was risky because they all had to nail it the first attempt, but those were REAL TEARS from Carell. Beautiful.

The author of the book hates the movie. So at least they have something in common.
Gene Wilder was actually upset at this scene. He was extremely close to all the children on set, and Peter Ostrum was nearly crying when he was shouted at by his friend Gene. I've heard that when cut was called, Gene hugged Peter tightly and comforted him. Gene Wilder was an amazing actor. Yeah he actually cried when he saw Peter was upset after all the fun stuff. Gene Wilder, a tremendous talent and a kind gentle soul, a terrible loss
He probably had an abusive dad or mom and hated yelling around a child with the same voice he heard yelling at him.
Some people really can’t handle hearing yelling because of childhood abuse, even if the yelling has justifiable context.

@@KRG30001 watch it again brother
Wonka also has gotten everything in his office half off, or has had a nasty dissolution with slugworth or someone who technically owned half his stuff. Its probably why he wants a successor so badly hes been zucked. Charlie now gets to deal with that. And the security issues with top secret recepies and prolly osha pissy about the oompa loompas. Wonka couldnt even read the the whole contract to them! It was cut in half! He kept etc etc when the page cut off. Then said it was clear as crystal! Great boss, charlie is gonna have SOME time with breaking away from g-pas manipulations and into wonkas. Its a dark film where people manipulate children for gags. Unlike the 90s films that children manipulated adults for gags. They had their start 7 years later with "meatballs". Or maybe 5 years later with "carrie" and she only got "revenge". The genre hit its height with "heavyweights" in '95. Then back to hurting kids for gags in "billy madison" in that same year

One of the most amazing displays of juxtaposition in film. I remember watching this movie as a kid and being so amazed at the transition from the fantastic, seemingly endless world that was the factory to seeing Wonka hunched over a small rolltop desk doing paperwork, and yelling at Charlie's grandpa about rules. It almost felt terrifying, like knowing all the wonders of childhood could come crashing down on you at any moment like that and ground you back to reality. He's not even being mean, it's just such a shock to be reminded of the brutality of real life especially in contrast of something so wonderful happening to you

Lol in the movie Wonka has the hugest bitch fit about it
I don’t think it’s about cost.. it’s about principle that nothing was to be tampered with. The entire test was about winning the factory and the ability to follow rules and go along with Wonka’s tour without so much as a hitch.
The other kids were punished by virtue of their “rule breaking” and general bad behavior, and that was entirely satisfying to Wonka, so their price was paid. The process of fixing every issue they caused was no problem and not a matter of money.
Wonka believed in Charlie, but his anger came from a place of disappointment because he knew in his heart that Charlie was the one.. and was sorely let down that they stole the drinks and endangered their lives because they messed around when no one was looking. Wonka wants someone completely competent and responsible to own the factory.
In the end, it’s the returning of the gobstopper that changes his heart, but it was truly about trust and following orders.. because how are you supposed to run such a top tier facility with so many quirks if you can’t stay in line for one day on a tour.
Grandpa Joe is the real crook. Family eats cabbage soup water and he smokes Tobacco everyday? And sits bed ridden for 20 years and then all of a sudden he can jump and dance and walk like he hasn’t had muscle atrophy? Grandpa Joe is the biggest chest and swindler of his whole family lmfao

That’s why he says “etcetera etcetera” because the lines of the contract were cut off.

He sounds so genuinely angry…
It was an act of course. He was doing this to test Charlie's integrity. Everything Wonka did was to test the children, but mostly Charlie, to determine if he would inherit the factory.
Gene Wilder hated filming this scene because it required him to get vicious in front of Peter Ostrum.
