  • We are incredibly fortunate to have recorded this conversation between Robert Sharpe, Director of Music, and Dr Philip Moore, Organist and Master of Music, about the events of the 1984 fire and how it impacted (or otherwise) the music of the Minster.

I recall this event as a regular visitor to York and it's wonderful Minster. After completion of the Rose Window/Minster, in general, I was again in York for the Early Music Festival and, amongst other concerts, attended a very moving late-night concert given by the Lay-Clerks directed by Philip Moore, which featured a Visual presentation by the Chief Glazier detailing the whole story from the fire to the resurrection of the Rose Window. This is a wonderful interview. Many thanks.

A treat of a video. Many thanks to Robert and Philip for their time, and to the editor!

Apparently, the Fire Chief was baffled that after having poured thousands of litres of water onto the fire in the transcept, there was literally no flooding and the water had "mysteriously disappeared. The reason was soon discovered and we have the Romans to thank for that : the Minster having been built on a site of Roman origin, still made use of the archaic, Roman built and highly effected drainage sluices, which emptied the water from the fire into the nearby river. (or so I've heard)." What have the Romans ever done for us?" seems an apt quote in this instance.

Yes, I remember well that terrible time when we were on our annual trip to York. I remember being amazed that Evensongs continued despite the devastation.

I wonder why FJ kept the swell boxes shut?

The incessant and wholly unnecessary background noise does not help with the intelligibility of what is being said. 🙄😖🤬

      Agreed!

It is annoying and inappropriate as well as unnecessary and disrespectful to Messrs. Moore and Sharpe. Would the Minster play such dross over the sound system to enhance the sermon?

      I quite agree

Quite agree. The background music is awful, although Sam Barber 's Adagio would have added that element of utter despair - and it's actually a very upbeat conversation.
