"What else could you do?" - John David, Master Mason Emeritus
John David was an apprentice mason at the time of the fire of 1984. 40 years later, he is our longest-serving member of staff, still working to conserve a building he helped to repair 40 years ago, filled with irreplaceable treasures he carried to safety on the night of the fire.
Imagine being in John's shoes 40 years ago, awoken in the middle of the night to find the Minster on fire and at risk of burning down altogether.
We are hugely grateful to have John with us this year, and to hear his characteristically matter-of-fact memories of a night that must have been so dramatic, retold as only a true Yorkshireman could.

Absolutely beautiful and uplifting.
Inspiring service accompanied by absolutely outstanding music. Thank you.
Passacaglia J. S. Bacha super wykonanie. Dziękujemy
Enjoyed the Bach!👏
Bravo Ben. Thrilling Franck. Let’s hear 1 and 2 soon.
A truly wonderful service (watched here in New Zealand)! It was so moving to see my longtime friend, Debbie Long, be ordained, and what a happy and loving way the service was led. I loved that there was a round of applause! The sermon was spot on - looking back I can see that this was something of course Debbie would do, but I never imagined it through the years. The group singing were just wonderful - heart and soul in their playing and singing. A huge shame I could not have been there in person, so thank you for the broadcast!
This piece of music takes my breath away every time I hear it
When I was 18 & 19, in 1985, I was visiting family in Yorkshire (from Australia: I emigrated with my parents when I was 3) a few months after the fire, and my uncle was one of the carpenters in the firm tasked with replicating the destroyed beams and rafters of the roof of the transept. He knew I was doing a cabinetmaking apprenticeship in Australia, so asked his boss, Geoff Brayshaw, if I could come to their yard and help with making the new roof. I spent 3 weeks marking and sawing & fitting HUGE joints in framing timbers of 100+ year old oak, made into the new beams, working sometimes to drawings copied from 18th & 19th century restorers' drawings in crayon on boards, discovered in storerooms in adjoining buildings. Either that, or getting extremely sooty measuring and replicating the burnt and shattered beams that could be rescued (what is an apprentice for, after all?). We used modern beam saws and morticers for some, but others, especially at angles, we had to cut like the original makers would have cut them, with hand (electric drill-powered) augers and huge framing slicks (specialised heavy chisels). My feet and inches maths improved in leaps and bounds! (& yes I did carve my initials where no-one will ever see them, probably, unless they look). Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the installation of the trusses that I had a small part in making (I had to get back to Melbourne, making dining chairs and 'French farmhouse'-style refectory tables: chunky in themselves, but delicate in comparison with the 18" x 6" timbers I had been working with) , but I have photos showing the installation process from Uncle Rob and his workmates. A great learning experience.
That fire left me gutted from thousands of miles away in Texas. Immense gratitude here for all the many firefighters who fought and succeeded in saving the Minster. And also for those who so diligently rebuilt and restored this sacred place.
Would love to know the psalm setting as it was beautiful!
Always first class!
I remember that horror like it was yesterday. Even from Texas, I was just gutted at the thought. Then just five years ago the same kind of gut wrenching over Notre Dame where I had performed when I was 17. These incredible, unfathomable, rare works of marvel and mystery giving testament of the magnificence of God are just treasures too great to be lost. I do wish the UK would restore and rebuild the ancient ruins of so many others which fell into ruins over the centuries. They too need to speak again.
Wonderful. Thank you from across the pond
Wow, never heard Gibbons sung like it's opera before! Solo sounds (and looks) more suited to something written for the stage by Benjamin Britten. Incredible!
I had the great privilege of attending all the choral evensong services from Saturday 15th June to Friday 21st as well as choral eucharist on the Sunday. The Minster choir never cease to thrill me, thank you Robert for your continuing outstanding leadership. I'm not embarrassed to admit that every time I hear psalm 150 sung as the recessional at the end of the Sunday eucharist it brings tears to my eyes! Thank you so much.
Thank you for your kind words, Peter!
Gratitude and thanks to the extraordinary choir and musicianship all around! A beautiful service.
We chose this music for our wedding in 1970. I recently lost my beloved husband and am heartbroken, but hearing Vidor's beautiful piece now and again is a comfort. Thank you.
Well done to all who fought the fire that night.
It's a wonderful job those working to repair the Minster have done, they should all be very pleased and proud of their efforts.
Bravo veramente bravo 👏👏👏
Anglican means Music, duplicated Nowhere
Marvellous performance of 'The Spirit of the Lord' 😍
SMUKT!
Wonderful Anglican Church music. Thank you and greetings from Germany
Thank you for posting this
Played exactly as it should be played.Magnificintly.
Fabulous bravery from these women. So proud of them. I am a Catholic woman who longs for women priests and so happy to see these women being ordained despite all the resistance they have to put up with, even now.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Bravo Amici Coro!
A great piece by Widor! Also like St Saeun organ symphony, 4th movement Powerfull end to the whole works! Fraser❤❤❤
Thank you, York Minster. The choral presentation was beautiful.
Beautiful Service. I love this organist - he really feels every note - congrats on a great performance of the Duruflé voluntary.
I remembered about 10 years. Ago visiting York Minster standing next to one of these massive bass pipes! When it sounded you didn’t hear it but you felt the massive pressure wave! I didn’t stay to long as my inside was vibrating! A great sound overall! That’s why they call it the King of Instruments! Fraser❤
Agree that tempo is about right., many play it far to fast and the audio sound waves crash into each other! Bach’s tocatto and fuch in D minor is just a mash of noise if it’s played too fast! It’s a good test for a hi fi speakers as the frequencies go way down to 16 HZ and harmonics go way up past the human hearing range! I studied audio engineering many years and found it fascinating! If you walk into a church when the organ is playing you walk through the waves and get a pleasant feeling in your ears! It’s the Doppler effect where frequency, amplitude, and phase all sound together ! Try it sometime! The Hammond organ is another example ! Sound straight out of the speakers sound dry! Switch the Leslie speakers and the sound comes alive and spacious! Listen to Procal Harem or bands like Focus they make many interesting sounds from the Doppler effect!🎼 Fraser.😃👂👂
You have had a bad day... generally miserable.. not feeling appreciated....close your eyes, listen to this and let it wash over you..
Well sung, to every chorister, on thus special day.
So grateful to the Minster for holding this again
Thank you so much for 1:11:10...!
Amen
From the central plains of Texas, thank you for this blessing as I’m confined at home the past six months. The live-streaming of services has truly been the greatest redemption to come from the scourge of Covid. I am now able to follow both York Minster and Rochester along with my home church of First Presbyterian in Tyler, Texas. I am very grateful.
Will be streamed? I am very eager to see a Compline from the Minster. I always see those of Keeble and Magdalen's colleges but one from Minster's quire.... no paralell at all!
I am sorry, it won't be on this occasion. We'll put this request to the Music & Liturgy Team and see if we can get a service online in the near future!
Played at the perfect speed An excellent performance just perfect.
Particularly noisy congregation at the end of the service!
SMUKT! IF YE LOVE ME BY THOS TALLIS SUNG OUTSIDE THE QUIRE!
What happened to the First evensong of Pentecost - a major Feast in the whole Church? It came over as: Oh yes we have to spend some attention to this as well. Was it not more liturgically appropriate to select a date on a weekday in the coming week or so? For the rest I wish Canon Milne all the best and God's blessing in his new position in the Chapter and for all his role as Precentor.(I listen a lot to your online evensongs - at least 2/3 times a week).
This beautiful piece was played at my graduation ceremony and my late husband and I chose it for our wedding. Sadly he passed away too young aged 54, last November 😢
Beautiful rendition of the Toccata! Love that quiet part (closed swell) around 4:30. Maestro Morris plus the power of York Minster - It's like voices from Heaven! Greetings from Canada!
