Recreating "Hard to Explain" by the Strokes on Drums | What's That Sound? EP 34

- Listening to the drums on "Hard to Explain", one could be forgiven for thinking they were created by a drum machine. Strokes drummer Fab Moretti and producer Gordon Rafael used a handful of tricks to achieve this effect using real acoustic drums. Noam & Jessica gave it the "What's That Sound?" treatment, how did they do?

I love these drum sound breakdowns. To see some of the plugins used for the processing would be super helpful and to hear a bypassed/processed comparison for each of the major processing steps.
I'm so frustrated that they use so much unattainable gear sometimes. I don't personally have a friend named Ben. Is this even on the market?
Warm Audio makes a Ben-style friend now too
It’s only unattainable until you own it. Gives you something to strive for if you really want it.

@@sawsquaresinetube Or gives you the drive to figure out how to do something similar with whatever you have. Knowing what techniques/characteristics are needed > owning the actual gear used.
@@JUNKO____ That is a good philosophy. Some people won’t settle for < both. Using the original equipment the right way.
HOOOLLYY SHIT THEY DID HARD TO EXPLAIN🧎🏽♂️🧎🏽♂️🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I was in a HS band and we spent so many hours trying to figure this out/basically dampen my kit to death.
wow finally, been waiting for this one! such an iconic drum sound, so sick!
I feel like it might be out of your wheelhouse, but it'd be interesting to see you guys try to recreate the super distorted electronic drums of Bjork's "Five Years" or the processed sounds on "Joga."
Any Fontaines DC or Black Midi song or basically anything recently produced by Dan Carey would be very interesting to see.
YES
Enjoy the royalty/license free "version" in the demo at the end, lol. Good stuff.
The sound works so well for the bands sound but it could sound hilariously bad in many other contexts
just what i was thinking!
Yes!! I've been obsessed with trying to figure out this sound since seeing an interview with Gordon Rafael talking about how they did it, but none of my clients or drummer mates would put up with me testing it with them lol
love this series guys. I would love to see you guys do the Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop. the quick release of that crash has always intrigued me. I assume it was gated but i'd love to see your take on it!
Great pick!! So great
Can't believe they able to explain something like Hard to explain😊
Great video! Great song to analyze. Would love to see the whole song deconstructed.
love the guy that stood there the whole time holding the hihat haha. could only do so much to keep him out of frame lol
at the end of the day, this sped up version feels so different while sounding the "same". It's impressive how tempo changes makes us feel
great video
That hi hat stuck in my head endlessly
i felt edged to waiting for the guitars to roll in all throught but brilliant video!
The drum machines the Strokes were imitating, such as the LinnDrum, DMX, DrummTraks or Roland 707, used sample-based sounds rather than analog tone-generating circuitry.
I once tried to record a cover of this very song.
For the drums I used a 1963 Pinguim (brazilian Ludwig, sort of), no reso head, a lead bucket resing inside and very skewed EQ (low end galore, scooped low-mids) and compressed with a cassette ALC/limiter.
I used the kit's snare (14x5 wooden, rounded bearing edge) + that Steve Albini spare head technique, not quite a BFSD. Also close mic'd top and bottom. I read on SoS (IIRC) that the strokes would place the hi-hat to the other side of the set, to sound more like gated drums. I did not use overheads but two very tinny dynamic mics on crash/ride and hi hat, mixed low. All this to a 2-track submix.
Vocals were a headphone wired to an XLR and belting my face off. Guitars went through a 6" frontman combo amp, recorded with that tinny mic and a subwoofer...
Drums please Fab
Noam always looks like he's ripped a huge bong right before filming
It would be amazing for all us electronic musicians if you would re create new orders blue monday I know they used a oberheim dmx I'm sure you have one laying around the reverb studios ..but yea they ran it through the reverb rooms at Britannia row studios and I'm sure added other stuff ..
Finally!!!
Please do a Grizzly Bear episode! There is like no info out there and such great drum sounds.
lets gooo
Please do the drums for Dirty Mind or any Prince records for that matter. I love his processing!
Real question is how do they make the sound work when he switches to the ride cymbal later in the song?
I would to see one of these on U2/Larry Mullen's drum sound on Pride (In the Name of Love), though it might be tough without a castle lol
Is the chorus just an edit to a normal full kit or is the riding the crash cymbal an overdub?
Would love to see a video on the Nigel Olsson oversized Slingerland kit he used on the early Elton John albums . Ala, Dont shoot me im the piano player.
What about when the ride comes in for the chorus?
Please do Damaged Good by Gang of Four. I'm begging y'all 😩😩😭😭
I always wondered how they got that hi hat sound haha
Would love to see a Mac demarco drum sound
How about the sound of the Rush album Moving Pictures? Especially having to work with a large kit (not saying replicate Neil’s giant touring kit of course.)
This is all well and good, but there is also a crash ride hit for 1/2 the song which would have been important to know how close to mic/how to mic
Anyone know where I can see that tic tok video he mentions at the beginning?
the halloween ghost on proQ3...
I’m pretty sure you DID use a drum machine. She was hitting solid 16th notes for the WHOLE VIDEO!!
Just a tip, next time you're spreading out the kit like this, put the hihat on the right, might be weird but it will be much more natural for the drummer. Jessica is a great drummer, but I could definitely hear her left hand struggling to keep those hihats consistent
This is what the strokes did, same mic might have picked up the crash ride too (which is omitted in this video)
Listening to this I thought “why they didn’t also try to add the ride-crash that Fab uses at the chorus of the song?” but then you said that each element was intended to be recorded as separate as possible, and that ride-crash kinda destroys everything in the mix
I never clicked so fast to a CZcams video
I find it funny that this was the song to replace New York City cops because not only does it not sound like the rest of the album but it’s completely the opposite of that song.
But why are the guitar notes all wrong?
They're avoiding copyright infringement
@@SinnetSongs I see!
Good try, but doesn’t sound like the song to me. The hi hats especially sound nothing alike
yooo where do i put my email for the giveaway?
