  • Turley Cemetery is located in Caryville TN, in the area called Red Ash.
It's a very peaceful area during the day, and quite spooky at night.

We love a good ghost story as much as anyone, in fact we are a collection of Paranormal groups, cemetery preservationists and kind hearted folks that see cemeteries like Turley and want to give back. You might not be aware but "Haunted Red Ash" is completely a construction of the internet. While it may seem creepy to some, to those who live around here and bury our dead at the site it's precious. Unfortunately, a decade of vandalism, gravestone destruction, and general apathy has taken it's toll on this peaceful place. In the coming year we hope that you'll join us in changing the culture of investigation when it comes to sacred burial sites and help us undo some of the damage done to Turley Cemetery and other burial hot spots like it. We hope you'll help us!

It's an unfortunate part of our world, there are those who wish to preserve and there are others who wish to destroy and deface. It's been this way since ancient times and it will continue to be this way. Anytime we write a story or post a picture or video, we take a risk that someone out there will show up with ill intensions. I wish you luck in your endeavors.

I grew up in this area, my family goes back 4 generations in Red Ash. The tower is not a coal tower, it belonged to the White Silica Sand Company that was owned by my Grandparents. When you cross the bridge in your video theres a swimming hole I would swim in all the time throughout my life. Adjacent to the swimming hole was an area that satanic worshippers would worship and sometimes sacrifice animals. My Grandmother feared NOTHING and NO ONE, she carried a rifle in one hand and a Bible in the other. If she found out they were down there she'd run them off lol. Please note not all Satanic worshippers sacrifice live animals, just saying. But this group did. They also dedicated the area to satan...hence the bad feeling when you approach Red Ashe. But all us Hughetts weren't scared at all...mamaw and her rifle made sure of that. She would tell us kids terrifying stories that either happened to her or stories passed on to her from her Grandparents. Up the road just a bit is a dirt road leading up to the now defunct Long Pit Mining Company. It actually did not stop operations till the early 1990's. My own Father worked there on the night shift and oh the stories he told us kids. Many men were killed there. One of which I recall my Daddy saying that a man fell off his tower overlooking the belt carrying the coal. His body fell approximately 40ft down onto the belt onto a very sharp jagged chunk of coal which impaled the man to the horror of my Daddy and the miners that were there to witness it...I know all the hidden crevices and places in the creeks that carry stories the likes of Stephen King himself would be scared to death of...
And the woman? That's true. She was a friend of the family back in the 1920's and her, her husband and 7 kids lived on the other side of the road catty corner to my Mamaw. You could access their property courtesy of a foot bridge crossing the creek. It was told to me by my Grandmother that Elsie Jane was home with the kids getting supper ready when her husband walked in from a 24 hour shift in the underground part of the mines. He was a tad bit of an alcoholic and mean as a two headed cow with a braided tail. One of the kids forgot to take newspapers (aka toilet paper) out to the outhouse and when their Daddy discovered there weren't any he snapped...sadly he shot and killed all his kids. And as Elsie was laying over his kids sobbing he pulled her up by the hair of her head cursed her and her family, beat her, then stabbed her with the meat knife. She's often been seen crying and searching for her young'uns. My Mamaw always cried when retelling that story...and if you park or just go sit in this one particular spot, you will hear her mournful cry. I have heard her as well as my friends I brought there. We were in High School and thought we were tough....until that moment. And btw, next to the tower you'll find the old office for Mamaw's Sand Compan. I played as a kid many a time in that office to the sound of my Mom typing and taking care of the books and calls. That old typewriter and other things are still inside that office.

Thanks for the info. I had drove through there many times. I used to live in Scott Co. But I never knew the name or the history of this place. Was there a witch's house in the area? Or was it just made up. I don't believe in ghosts. But I know not to mess with Satan and his demons.
      Thanks and take care.

The tower I went to was right next to the road on old TN 63 somewhere before the turn off for Turley Cemetery. There are supposed to be other structures in the area but I've not been to them. Be careful up there, people go hunting out that way.
