November 5th, 2011. 27 year old James Kirkland aka “Mandigo Warrior” took on 29 year old Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo in a battle for the vacant WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight Championship.
At this juncture, both men’s lone loss were upsets; Kirkland was shockingly stunned by little known 17.5-1 underdog Nobuhiro Ishida via TKO1 in April 2011 while Angulo lost a UD12 to 3-1 underdog Kermit Cintron back in May 2009.
Prefight records; Kirkland 29(25)-1, Angulo 20(17)-1.
Going into the fight, Kirkland had commendable triumphs against Brian Vera & Joel Julio while Angulo had top wins over the likes of Gabriel Rosado, Joachim Alcine & Joel Julio.
The 2 BOXING WARRIORS collided in an action-packed slugfest where a combined total of 871 punches were thrown throughout 16 minutes and 58 seconds of pugilistic implosion.
In round 1, Kirkland was decked within 30 seconds from the opening bell while Angulo was floored with 17 seconds left in the round. Angulo threw over 100 punches after scoring the knockdown in an attempt to call in an early night which he almost had, as Kirkland looked utterly helpless while bombarded on the ropes for nearly 30 seconds.
As Kirkland was enduring the onslaught, referee James Callas yelled, “James, show me something or I’m gonna stop it!” which fueled him to return fire and wobbled the exhausted Angulo before evening up the knockdown score to end one of the most memorable opening salvos of the 2010s.
In round 2, Kirkland began pacing himself efficiently with his right jab to keep Angulo at bay and outworked him.
In round 3, Angulo fought with the southpaw stance through most of the round and it worked well in his favor as he had the upper hand against Kirkland whenever they traded at close or mid range.
In round 4, Kirkland consistently shoe-shined Angulo who was largely unable to throw back. However, the Mexicali born fighter managed to connect with a head-snapping left hand, but he could not follow up due to exhaustion.
In round 5, Angulo’s legs were evidently no longer under him as he was viciously hammered to the body and head. Occasionally, he retaliated but there was little to no pop left in his punches at this point.
In round 6, Kirkland wasted no time zeroing in on the dogged but punched out Angulo with barrages after barrages of shots that left Callas no choice but to jump in and halt the merciless assault at the 1:58 mark.
The Mandingo Warrior became the new WBC Continental Americas Light Middleweight Champion via TKO6 after a brutal back and forth affair in one of the most unforgettable fights of the last decade.
The opening round of James Kirkland vs. Alfredo Angulo was voted as Round of the Year 2011 by Ring Magazine.
Note: James Kirkland had reunited with his original trainer Ann Wolfe who conditioned him to go the distance while Angulo’s trainer Ignacio Beristain merely prepared his fighter to go for an early finish. Kirkland’s reconciliation with Wolfe was a key factor missed by most analysts in predicting the outcome of the bout.

The HBO production was soooooo bad too lmao. I dont know if they didnt have time to set up or something, but the sound was way off and you couldnt hear much of anything on the original broadcast. Camera work was shoddy too. The whole thing was weird. I remember watching it live.
