- I made a new battery for the T1 Ranger using Molicel P45B cells, and wanted to try that out. I was also collecting data for Walksnail engineers, logging debug info to an SRT (subtitles). Then just a fun cruise around later to run out the battery. A fun flight all around!

I use 10000mah 21700 2s - doesn't fly so well but will maintain altitude at around 5a😁
Another lovely flight! I'm more than a little jealous of your nice flying weather! It's gone back to wind and rain for me. 😢
Don't feel bad, that was the last chance I had to fly before the wind and rain return here. Not to mention the heat! lol Heat index yesterday was 121ºF, actual temp was 102. I welcome a bit of rain to cool it down some at this point. :D
Brazil isn't much better lately either. 😕
P45b are Really good cells i get 22 mins cruise flight time on just regular 5inch drones with these cells and flying aggressive freestyle they barely get warm.
Yeah the max amp draw is overkill for what I'm doing with them, but I figure they'll be happy a live a long time in a low stress environment... lol
I just ordered my first 8x Molicel P45B's and another 4x P42A's this morning. LoL! Let us know about that spot welder.
I've tested T1 with 4s1p 21700 5000mah liion and its flies good, landing speed slightly increased. It flies almost an hour and covered 50km
Nice, I like the 3S setup for cruising around like I do. I wasn't sure a 4S 21700 would even fit, it's a little tight with the 3S, the front corner of the battery is just touching the bottom of the front hatch, with the battery right back to the spar. I had to slide the FC back to the rear too to get it balanced, but I do have the Walksnail stuff up front in the nose along with a pan servo.
@@bonafidepirate I’ve placed it as rhombus touching one cell the bottom floor of plane. No battery plates and mounts. Just Velcro
@@nogod4me_fpv OK, I still have the plate in mine, with a MenaceRC Switch laying under the plate. (for switching VTX power off until I'm ready to fly)
IFly mighty one on 4S and I use the bigger veto motors with the V tall 5 in bi blade props.
Now that I'm super used to it flying on 4S I don't think I could go down to a 3s
Awesome flying, Keith! 😃
I hope they ask some quad fliers as well!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I soldered my 21700s together using 1.5mm solid copper wire using a big iron. A 4S pack would be great in the Swordfish I reckon....🤔😳😏🇬🇧
I'm using a 4S1P 21700 in the Swordfish and it works well. It's the ZOHD Lionpack Max. I think they use Samsung cells and rate it at 5000mAh. The cost of that battery was one of the final pushes to get me to try spot welding my own... lol I have another 3S pack of 5300 Vapcell 26650s that I intended to use in a glider that I soldered together, but was never totally happy with soldering on LiIon cells. It works and held together, but took a fair bit more heat than I was comfortable with. The cells seemed to survive it though. lol
@@bonafidepirate Yes, mine are Molicells rated at 4000mah 4S....they cost around 10 dollars each as I recall. I use a 250vac Soldering Iron, it's a big one with a heavy tip. Just use wire wool to clean the surface and use real leaded solder. The cycle life is way higher than a conventional Lipo battery. Something often overlooked...🤔😳😳😏😀🇬🇧
Are you using a head tracker or do you have the camera gimbal assigned to pot switches?
I bought the cheap spot welder, now I gotta find where I put everything lol 😂
It's pretty fun being able to make our own batteries. I probably just about broke even on the first one just in materials, but I'll start saving on the next ones. lol
Did you also source nickel strips from Amazon?
Cool video Keith! You should do a walk thru video on your spot welder!
This a win-win, fun flying for Keith, while capturing engineering data.
To me the more interesting frames of video for engineers would be from 11:24 (11:30, 11:35) where encoding of the video pixelats in lower centre of video do the higher motion across the video frame. It's interesting to watch this section of (lower quality) video at 1/4 playback speed. It's does not like the antenna angle, or distance to the T1 Ranger are changing much, but video encoding quality seems to fade better/worse. More pixelation can be seen later again as the T1 Ranger makes low passes near home, near trees, behind antennas, etc.
I don't think they are focused too much on compression algorithms, more to do with the RF signal. It's hard to just the compression anyway considering this is recorded on the PC, encoded again in Vegas when I edit, then again when CZcams gets it.
@@bonafidepirate Was referring to the algorithm in the VTx that encodes and sends out video stream. Agree, it's possible RF bandwidth was reduced at those points, limiting data that could be sent.
From an engineering perspective, the somewhat similar frames, with differing quality could be good feedback. Unlike flying through a forest, or a bando where each frame differ significantly from the previous/next.
Would you mind sharing your current ardupilot parameters? I'm going to be building the ranger with ardupilot and walksnail soon and I'd like to have it as a reference since it seems to fly really well for you.
Love these videos. How do you get your pan to go in such a wide degree of range? I have the 300° one that you mentioned in one of your videos and I can’t get it to go more than 180°. I am using iNAV.
I had this issue and figured out how to fix it. Go into INAV and change the pulse min/max from 1000/2000 to 500/2500. Hope that helps.
@@pgrcadventures1414 Thank you for your response 👍🏻 yes , eventually I to figured out that adjusting those perimeters made the difference 👏
This makes me wanna get liion for my t1 as well! Which spot welder did u get? Would you recommend it
I bought this one amzn.to/3Q6Tzfa but only paid 30-something for it on sale. There's a bunch that look just like it from different sellers on Amazon, I'd bet most of them are the same. It seems to work well, wasn't hard to get the hang of it. I watched a few videos on how to use them properly and practices on some old dead cells before trying on the good ones. I do have to run mine on the highest power setting to get a good weld that's hard to pull off. It's not burning holes in anything, and tears the nickel strip to pull it off so I guess it's holding about as good as it can. lol
Literally been looking at the Epoch and the Molicell P45Bs trying to decide which to get. I might go with the Epoch just because I haven't used them yet and I want to see if the extra few bucks they are charging is just for their fancy label or not.
What Epoch cells are you looking at? I didn't see those when shopping around.
@@bonafidepirate Its the Epoch 21700 P45B, but looking into them further this morning the consensus is that they are just re-wrapped Molicel P45Bs so the extra ~$3 is literally just the label.
@@CDRaff Interesting, I hadn't see those. Looks like they're rebranded Molicels though like you said, so I guess whatever is easiest to get. I bought mine from liionwholesale
I'm a bit surprised everything still functions well on 8V. when we first tried li-ion on our long range flights we found we lost VTX around 11 volts.
What VTX was it? I'm not positive what the V1 Walksnail transmitter is rated for, but the V2 is supposedly good down to 6V. The voltage on the left of the bottom row of icons (built in Walksnail OSD) is the transmitter voltage. It's running on the regulator in the FC so it drops a bit lower than the battery voltage once it gets low. It stayed up around 7V at the end of the flight though.
I try to keep landmarks and always try to keep an idea where I'm at at all times when I'm fine just in case it goes down or have an idea
It happened three times twice with my drift when it broke apart mid-air two times and another time there's a battery failure and in act two of the three times even though I was keeping track I still have no idea where it went down and I had to luckily I was using DJ I and I was able to have instant playback was able to watch the video and that's how I was able to find the model
I wanna fly but my stupid fatsnail avatar goggles died when I plugged them into a usb c portable monitor that worked fine multiple times before it killed the goggles. I'm not experimenting with the video out feature ever again.
WTF 😳
Did you contact their support?
@@MCsCreations 3 days ago bought a new set of black walksnail goggles today
@@MCsCreations I was running a 4s battery on the goggles and the portable monitor that worked fine for 3 days was powered by a Asus usb c phone charger. Not sure what went wrong possibly the portable monitor bridges the power of the 2 separate usb c ports and hits everything plugged in with the full quick charge 3.0 voltage?. USB C video output has always worked flawlessly on my 144hz LG desktop monitor idk why it rekt the goggles this time.
@@lililililililili8667 I see. I believe you're right about that. 😕
I'm really sorry!
@@MCsCreations Ordered a new set of the black walksnail goggles for 600 not plugging monitors into anything but my VRX in the future.
I was wondering if you were going to land in VTOL mode with 3.0v on your cells but you didnt :) Smart move
Especially considering it's traditional fixed wing and doesn't have the VTOL conversion... lol
@@bonafidepirate Ha, I've 2x VTOL T1's - had forgotten they do a normal version :) :)
