"Dollar-Store Avengers" pretty much nails this flick.
I loved that title! Before I knew of the Avengers, I called these guys Discount Power Rangers. This movie is like so stupid and cringe and corny and so much bad! But I love it! lol There are many other films out there as bad as this one, hope to see your reaction to them if you haven't already seen them. lol
As nobody else has mentioned him. Dr A. HELLER. Played by TOM WAITS. Great singer. Composer. Actor.
I hear he's big in Japan.
@@williamozier918 i met him once on 9th and hennepin
In the 70's if you took a girl on a date and she ordered the lobster (the most expensive thing on the menu) it meant she was going to be a pain in the ass. "We've got a blind date with destiny, and it looks like she's ordered the lobster."
HA! Lovely
Thanks. I always wondered what that saying meant.
Rumor has it that all the characters who showed up as heroes for the "try out scene" were just actors who showed up in an "open casting call" - there were no lines written, everyone just improvised their own characters (showing up in their own costumes).
Yes, that was Dane Cook as "The Waffler"
25:39 - I like how this frat guy is literally just Michael Bay. I've always thought that is was the weirdest cameo in this film. 😆
When you start to doubt your powers, you give power to your doubts.
Don't you start!
This is one of my favorite movies to quote. I can rarely do yard work without thinking to myself "Lucille, God gave me a gift. I shovel well. I shovel very well." Often, while getting dressed in the morning my wife will toss out the line between the Bowler and Invisible Boy: “Maybe you should put some shorts on… or something,… if you want to keep fighting evil today.” 20+ years later and it still is always good for a laugh. Both of us will often randomly spout "There's another chicken. Crazy chicken world." or "Who would want to rent a chicken?" there doesn't even need to be a chicken present, but it does help. "Disco is not dead! Disco is LIFE!" is just a useful phrase at any time. Any time someone messes something up and says we did something I don't miss a beat "What do you mean, 'we'? I was right here." Working in tech I like to occasionally use: "So, this is basically a huge electromagnet... Well, actually, it's an electro-nuclear-magnet. It's the next inevitable phase." Another fun one to use on occasion: "Well, I am a ticking time bomb of fury." It truly is a gift that just keeps giving.
It also is the movie that gave us All-Star, not Shrek. Personally, I prefer most of the rest of the soundtrack, especially "Back in 1999" or "Rainy Day Parade" but to each their own. The entire Sountrack is a winner though, check it out.
I always kind of felt that this movie, “Princess Bride”, and “Galaxy Quest” are all kind of similar in that they are great comedies in genres not known for comedies without being a slapsticky parody of the genre.
One of the funniest superhero comedy movies ever made!
It has an awesome all star cast, William H Macy, Ben Stiller, Paul Reubens, Wes Studi, Janeane Garofalo, Greg Kinnear, Hank Azaria, Eddie Izzard, Claire Forlani, and Geoffrey Rush. I wish they had made made a second film to this movie. It's a lot of fun, and pokes fun at the superhero genre.
Don’t forget Tom Waits - the most unlikely person to be in this movie.
Tom waits.
Also Michael Bay as the leader of the Frat Boys. Why, oh why couldn’t he have died in a massive explosion?
Finally someone reacted to this movie, I fell in love with it when it first released, and still watch it from time to time, granted it's stupid, and ridiculous but that's part of this movies charm.
Right? It’s doubly strange how little recognition this movie gets in the YT reaction channel scene when Superhero movies are generally so popular these days. It’s perfect for anyone burnt out on the standard MCU & DCEU fare
This isn't even the only off-kilter superhero movie that features Eddie Izzard as a villain. Izzard also played the main villain in "My Super Ex-Girlfriend."
The Mystery Men were originally characters in a comic book called "The Flaming Carrot."
Ut!
The Flaming Carrot Story is he is a man who reading too much superhero comic books and think he is a superhero and choose to become one.
@@langbo9999 It’s worse than that. He suffered brain damage from reading superhero comics.
It’s regrettable but understandable that he wasn’t included in the movie. How would you film a guy riding a lawnmower like a skateboard?
Leave it to Sam to *perfectly* sum up Mystery Men: Dollar Store Avengers.🤭 And honestly, us nerds loved it. We made fun of it, but still watched it every time it came on.
Surprised no one mentioned that Michael Bay is in this movie as the leader of the Frat Boys...yes, that Michael Bay, the director of Transformers.
Ohhhh my god 😂😂😂
@@OGBReacts exactly, just a random cameo. Along with Dane Cook as The Waffler 🤣
I was wondering if someone was going to point that out 🤣
@Jordan Butterworth I had too... it's the law and DreddIAmTheLaw.gif
Fun fact. This is the first movie to include _All Star_ in its soundtrack.
That's right. Before _Shrek,_ there was _Mystery Men._
"She Ordered the Lobster" = Your date ordered the most expensive thing on the menu, you didn't bring enough to cover it.
This was such a great flick. So much fun, silly, and outrageous. The best part of this movie, and the graphic novel, was the fact that a bunch of ordinary people banded together to "fight evil and crime", and how ridiculous it is. Your reaction to it is great.
21:23 the sphinx is a parody of the wise, spiritually-powerful native american dude trope. he's played by wes studi, an absolute legend of an actor who totally kills it in this movie. but that's why he always speaks in cliches! this movie is way more clever than it has any right to be tbh.
The great thing about Baby Bowler, is she has the same powers as the PMS Avenger, but works 30 days a month, AND has a magic flying bowling ball.
This movie is completley over the top nonsense, but it has the perfect tone, because you clearly can see, they had so much fun doing this. And that's what i miss about movies these days.
Apparently Ben Stiller was surprised when Dane Cook showed up with a waffle iron and grill marks. He said, "What are you doing? You are supposed to waffle like you can't make a decision!" I think Dane improved it
“Is this the Dollar Store Avengers?” Yes.
eeeee this is one of my favorite comedies ever. i always get really excited when people discover mystery men. it's a real overlooked gem.
The guy with the forks was Agador Spartacus in The Birdcage. Hank Azaria.
Everyone thinks about Shrek when they hear All Star, but for me, it's this movie. Brings me back to the 90's.
I always think, “wow, this band is bad”.
Mystery Men... then Inspector Gadget... then Shrek... then Rat Race.
@@earthien When I think of Gadget my mind goes to that Youngstown song.
I worked at universal studios Hollywood during college, and this song played all day, every day, in every part of the park (even staff elevators and changing rooms). After 2 years of that, I have never hated a song so much in my life.
@@thefreedommovement That's how I feel about Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. 8 years of both daily, multiple times a day...
This movie had so much hype around it when it came out. Billboards and ads and it was crazy. The song all-star by smash mouth was a big part of it and the music video actually has clips of the movie in it. Even though now people associate it more with shrek
I first watched this, when someone at school was handing around a tape of it, with a screener version. Every now and then text would pop up saying the usual "this is property of blah blah, not for distribution"
1998 to like 2003 was an era of weird-ass movies getting huge budgets and major mass market releases, that kind of thing just doesn't happen anymore.
I used to play Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon with my friends, and I used this movie a lot, because Tom Waits (the non-lethal weapons guy) was in Queen's Logic with Kevin Bacon, so this movie gives a second-degree connection to a lot of big names. (Side note: Linda Fiorentino was also in Queen's Logic, *and* she was also in Dogma, which had a tonne of big names, such as Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Alan Rickman, Selma Hayek, Chris Rock, and George Carlin, so there's another massive second-degree connection for any of you Six Degrees enthusiasts)
All hail Kevin Bacon
I forgot Claire Forlani was in this movie. You should check out her movie with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins called Meet Joe Black
Another Superhero film with a similar "odd-ness" which came out at around this same time was a small indie movie titled "The Specials" - quirky enough to watch if you love this genre
Written by and starring James Gunn.
Mystery Men walked so MHA could run 😂 I used to LOVE this movie as a kid! The design, the characters, I loved the villain. I wanted to be as cool as The Bowler
Such a stacked cast for such a silly movie. I love this one!
Me and my sister watched that movie yesterday. I almost cried when Captain Amazing died.
One of the funniest movies ever, more people should react to it!
When Dane Cook started getting huge in 05/06, I was watching his stand up and was like ".... is that The Waffler?" 🤣🤣🤣
I love this cast:
Janeane Garofalo (also in another of my favorite off beat movies: Dogma)
Paul Reubens (Pee Wee Herman's fame)
Eddie Izzard (one of my favorite cross dressing comedians)
Tom Waits (one of my favorite singer/song writers)
and Louise Lasser (of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman fame)
"Is this the Dollar Store Avengers?" Zing!
This is an all time fav. "NemeSES..."
😄 I ADORED this movie from the first moment I I saw it as a kid! I honestly probably watched it around 10 times whenever it showed up on cable channels like TNT or SciFi & all before I decided to buy the DVD myself. It’s a sincere & loving parody that honestly doesn’t get the attention it deserves despite the multiple recognizable stars in the cast. As others have said: I love seeing a great & rare reaction video like this & particularly strange how many reactors overlook it especially in our current Superhero movie era
Dollar Store Avengers - so spot on.
Baby Bowler: "Maybe... you should put some shorts on, or something, if you want to keep fighting evil today."
Mystery Men: get a movie
The Mask: gets a movie
The Flaming Carrot: "Ut!"
Dr. Heller is the great musician Tom Waits who is perfect for that role lol. Such a hilarious movie!!
29:14 "You need more forks?"
I'm surprised you folks haven't started buying them in _bulk,_ by now.
I loved this movie so much I dressed up at a con as 'Radio Man,' from the try-out scenes.
This movie is so ahead of its time. It was such a spot-on parody of Superhero movies before they made like 5 or 10 a year.
Smash mouth had a couple songs. Mtv had a bowling show for a season.
Thank you for watching this movie!!!!
Such a great cast!
Nice! More people need to react to this. Fantastic movie!
yes meatball sub with mayo is underrated try it, honestly i still dont know if i got it from this but hmm its actully good. tasted bread and provolone cheese
This is one of the many great superhero movies that weren't from Marvel or DC! My favorite is the movie "All Superheroes Must Die"!
It was a fun underrated movie.
“Dollar store Avengers” will be how I describe this movie from now on!
End-credit scenes weren't really a thing in 1999.; I mean, a few movies had them, but it wasn't the norm. It was the MCU movies that codified end-credits scenes for superhero movies.
15:17 I know it’s not actually him, but I cannot watch this movie without thinking that the spleen actor is the voice of CABOOSE…
if you are open to random comedy series reactions - check out RED VS BLUE
About time someone made a reaction video about this awesome movie!
This is another movie that fit in the category of 'Popcorn Film'.
No connection other than Paul Reubens (The Spleen), I hope you get a chance o watch Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (directed by Tim Burton) sometime. :)
I love Suzy Izzard! She's so funny in this movie!
Ridiculously dumbest things throughout but loved every moment! I had the best time watching this on the big screen.
22:23 "I don't need a _compass_ to tell me which way the wind shines."
🤔 Um... what?
Well Tham, thith ith the bethtetht thtuper power mithfittht movie out there. For those of you who don't speak Spleen: this is the best user power misfit movie out there. You know what? For someone who doesn't like Ben Stiller, I've seen a butt load of his efforts. This trip out these guys were the kind of heroes I might have come up with if I was a creative writer in the fourth grade. Jimmy Kimmel had a segment on his Supers last week. A comic he made decades ago. Lots of Star power to help him out. JJ Abrams directed the trailer. Hilarious! I promise there is no Spleen. Now as Dr Laura might say,"Go take on the day". Luv ya, bye
You have discovered one of my true guilty pleasures. Just plain silly, but hilarious if you are in the right mood. And you nailed it by calling it a "mind cleanse"! Check your higher brain functions at the door.
9:54 "Your first night of freedom and you... blow up the asylum. Interesting choice. I _knew_ you couldn't change."
"I _knew_ you'd know zat."
"Oh, I know _that._ _And_ I knew you'd know I'd know you _knew."_
You know?
Face-palmed😆
greg kinnear is perfect as smirky yet idiot capn amazing. i luv this movie.
I'm subscribing because you're reacting to this movie.
He's a Pantera's Box.
Ben Stiller - you have to think of his character as the most dedicated founding member of a band... but he has the least talent. Movie was really ahead of its time - the studio had no idea what to do with it, which is why it was banish to an August release back in '99.
I really enjoyed this reaction, thank you for your hard work 💪🇺🇸
Finnaly!
Casanova Frankenstein best super villian name ever
Very funny movie
Believe it or not, I saw this in theaters. Kind of mixed feelings by the end. Didn't outright despise it or anything, just felt the humor wasn't really my type of thing. Also weird to me seeing Paul Reubens in a role outside Pee Wee Herman or Hank Azaria in general, since he's primarily known as a main voice actor for The Simpsons.
Your knowlrof Hank Azaria is pretty limited.
@@tempsitch5632 I don't know what ''knowlrof'' is. Either way, the only other live action roles I'm aware of are Heat and Run Fatboy Run.
@@digidv85 I'm going to be requesting a reaction of one of them soon, Shattered Glass.
@@digidv85 LOL That’s my phone trying to help. I typed “knowledge”. You know two big films though and you’ll probably recognise more if you look him up. He co-starred on a hit sitcom before Simpsons. Speaking of sitcom, he had a big guest role on Friends too.
@@Rmlohner I rented that movie back in the day, don't even recall Hank starring in it. Maybe I was too occupied with noticing Hayden doing a good acting performance for once. Kind of disappointing Peter Sarsgaard got Globe recognition instead of him. I mean look at the former's resume: Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith (Won a Razzie for this movie), Jumper, Takers or Awake were at best mediocre.
Classic
You may also recognise a voice, if you have seen The Simpsons.
I love Lena Olin but miscast here as a budget store Harlequin except grossly underused as she doesn’t do anything except be psychiatrist side piece eye candy for Geoffrey Rush’s Casanova Frankenstein. She’s much better suited to scary femme fatale types like in Romeo Is Bleeding with Gary Oldman or in the Alias series.
JUST JUNK IT
For some reason, this movie's box office performance was _abysmal._ It didn't even make back _half_ what it cost to _make._
This IS the dollar store avengers
This, in my opinion, is the best nonsense superhero movie of all time. Plus, it has Tom Waits.
The actor that turned invisible, hasn’t been seen since this movie came out.
@8:01 Do you know who that is ? Eddie Izzard ? A British genius famous comedian that also happens to be a transvestite. Also learned to do his comedy routines in other languages, so he could tour other countries. Also ran like 80 marathons for charity.
Stop writing on the windows!
I thought you could only say Moo?
Moo.
And she recently came out as actually being transgender (though doesn't especially mind if people still use male pronouns).
@@Rmlohner What ? He got the chop ? I remember him saying he never would.
@@tempsitch5632 Not as far as I know.
On the whole I don’t really like Ben Stiller. I think his acting and characters are stilted, irritating and one-note. Not to mention even when it seems the movie is trying to make a point, ala Zoolander, it comes across as mildly funny but overly heavy handed.
HOWEVER, Mystery Men is a surprisingly good satire of the superhero genre. And this came out well _before_ the modern era of ridiculous Marvel explosion porn. The whole idea of “Superman” flying around covered in corporate logos is, I think, a hilariously prescient view of modern superhero movies, and frankly a perfect encapsulation of society.
This movie is stupid as heck but I have to give it immense credit for satirizing a genre that didn’t really exist when it was made.
"I am pencil head..."
"... And I am son of pencil head.."
"Two generations... Of that." Lol
did you notice that one of the Frat Boys was Michael Bay
I didn't but someone pointed it out before and that's hilarious
Ben Stiller is the worst brand of cringe. Thankfully he's surrounded by real talent.
Underrated film
its the super hero movie we didnt know we needed!
One of my favorite nonsense movies that appeal to the dork in me lol Hope you enjoy it's beautiful ridiculousness as a fellow goofball 🥸 ♡
