This movie was great... and probably several years too early. I feel like it was a combination of the studio not knowing what type of movie it was which led to them marketing it as a traditional comic book movie instead of what it actually was and then the audiences not buying into those trailers and other marketing methods... and all that led to a low box-office gross. I think it's a cult classic but one that's been forgotten by most except by the few that saw it.

Comic book movies werent big enough for a comedy like this to make waves. The homage/parody aspects rely heavily on knowledge of the genre, which was known to the mainstream as something only interesting to nerds and children. Literally only the biggest few comic names ever made it mainstream, like batman/superman/spiderman, even well into the early 2000s, to where non comic fans would go watch them.

Another hero film you may like is Frank Miller's 2008 "The Spirit" which is a different kind of hero film with similar visuals to the "Sin City" films. Critics seemed unfamiliar with the source material, they didn't get the tongue-in-cheek nature of Will Eisner's characters. Samuel L. Jackson plays the villain, The Octopus. Scarlett Johansson is his cohort.

One of my favorite exchanges is also so simple-
Roy's Boss: When are you gonna tear down that jeep like I told you?
Roy: We went through this yesterday, that "jeep" is actually an armored car of some kind. It's built to withstand bombs; I can't just rip it apart with a crowbar.

I'm with Emily on this one. This movie has always been a hoot. Huge William H. Macy and Geoffrey Rush fan. Jaenene Garafalo was terrific. I'm not a Ben Stiller fan, but his limitations work in this one. Paul Reubens and Hank Azaria did good work. Claire Forlani's eyes make me a better man. And the writing is spot on!

Congratulations on 20k subscribers - fully deserved! And welcome back, you two! It's great to see you again (even if it IS in some sort of surreal mirror dimension!) 😁
I hope you keep on healing, Matthew, and Emily, you make a great Cinema Sherpa!
As for the movie itself, I agree that if it was released now, it'd probably stand a much better chance of finding its audience. Perhaps if it had been released in, say '96, it might've been something of a hit, or even in the mid 2000s, but in 1999 the superhero genre was in the doldrums thanks to "Batman & Robin" so there wasn't really an audience to sustain a parody. That year also had a lot of big movies in it too, so the competition was intense... but at least it gets love now! That's probably precious little consolation to the people who lost their jobs after greenlighting the project, though!

Oh, and Michael Bay used to direct commercials, as well, with his most famous one probably being the Got Milk? Aaron Burr commercial. And this film's director also directed commercials for that campaign, as you mention. They may have known each in some other way but I'm guessing they definitely knew each other because of that and probably threw Bay in the film for shit's and giggles.

Love the reaction guys, I'd forgotten about this little gem! I loved it as a kid. I do remember it not being popular, but cant remember why? Maybe the Batman and Robin stain rubbed off on it? Or the marketing made it out to be something different than it was
Dig the new hair colour Emily!
Ah damn Matthew, that sucks about your back. Been there twice - once a deadlift gone bad (luckily "just" a slight protrusion on a disc in the lumbar section of the spine) and just before COVID I was doing some plyometric pullups along out gym's squat rack/monkey bars, slipped, fell about 3 metres (~9 feet) onto a couple of stacked safety rails that hadn't been put away, right on my lower back above my hip bone. Some how nothing was broken, just heavily bruised, muscle trauma, SIJ dysfunction and a couple of months of physio rehab... to be followed up the week my back felt good, fully rupturing my right ACL - but that's finally healing without surgery.
It's a struggle, but, keep to the physio stuff, good nutrition and recovery, and you get there. Best of luck mate!
