Two versions of the video for "Dark is the Night for All" were released. The first version was banned by MTV for being "too disturbing." The second version featured more scenes of the band and removed scenes of people in various forms of bondage, such as being tied to sticks, making ambulation impossible.

As a teenager, my room was PLASTERED with A-ha posters. I loved them as a kid and now that I am an adult, I can SEE why I've always had excellent taste in music ;) They have proven time and time again to be REAL musicians, who don't just conform to whatever everyone else is doing, with their own style. Harmonically speaking many of their lesser known songs are SUPERB. (Thinking about "There's Never a Forever Thing" for example). And man, they were and remained GORGEOUS!

I live in the US and no one here knows about this song! A ha is a one hit wonder here in the states with “Take on me” being their only hit record. The only reason I know about this awesome song is that my wife and I are always in Britain in May & June every year and in 1993 this song was a huge hit going up to number 12 on the UK charts. It should’ve been a much bigger hit than that. This song is so great that it should’ve gone number one in most countries.

The MEN the myth the LEGENDS. Morten had an amazing voice, but he had such great songs because of Pal’a amazing writing talent and musical abilities as well and Magne’s amazing writing and musical abilities. Morten Harket is not A-HA by himself.

There are three of them in this band. Magne and Pal? Morten hates this kind of attention too. I highly recommend watching “A-HA the movie”. You can see for yourself. Also came across an article where he said “I am a 61 year old dad of two teen age daughters. This kind of attention is embarrassing”.
Nothing will ever beat the class and musical brilliance of A-HA. Aha is the best musical band ever, period. Nothing ever comes close.

One of the things that makes a-ha's earlier recordings so exciting is the aliveness of their spirits, and this is evidenced by the passionate or emotive vocalizations between the lyrics or lines, such as we can hear in this one.
I guess 'enthusiasm' and 'passion' are better adjectives than 'aliveness,' but you see what I mean. I definitely like their work from both periods (and hope they will reunite at some future point in time, as well for a third, inspite of what they've said about ending their partnership on a high note), but their early work is of course infused with all that enthusiasm of making it so big in so many countries around the world, including the UK and US markets, which are so economically important to any artist. The excitement over their success and of course their youth and the newness of everything is expressed in their earliest music, including my favorite a-ha song ever, 'I've Been Losing You.' The grunts, and all those vocalizations between lines just infuses the music with the energy they were feeling at the time.

@@shelld1261 I'm sure he had a say in it!!!! You don't know the band if you think they aren't strong characters who don't say what they think - watch their new movie, it's very revealing and not a bare chest in sight.
@Joanne Ridout I did watch the movie and Morten talked about how he hated this stuff. Remember the scene with the reporter asking him to take his shirt off? That’s why this is cringe worthy to me. I am not sure if it was much choice, sure they were told to do it to promote the song better. If it was all their choice, it seems weird to me that Morten would stress about how much he didn’t like it. Just like they talked about in the movie, the promoters used Morten’s looks to promote the band. I just figure it would be nice as well as he would appreciate people stop going on about his looks and talk about his amazing voice as well as talk about Magne and Pal’s talents instead. Found an article where Morten said “ I am a 61 year old father of two teen age girls. This kind of attention is embarrassing!” There’s a scene in the documentary where he is in a car, going to the concert, he goes on and on about the quiet. You can feel how much he hates the idea of getting out of the car and getting that kind of attention. At least that’s how it came across to me.

Somehow, I missed this song in the myriad of their other hits. Must confess A-ha have greatly matured through their 80s era. Will miss them....hope they re-unite for some gigs.

It was several years after release before I discovered this album as it didn't get much, if any, exposure in the US. And then I shocked when I saw that it had been recorded at Prince's Paisley Park just under 30 miles South from my home!
Memorial Beach is a-ha's most experimental album and was much underrated, it was one of the least sold as well. It's a shame, because there are beautiful songs like this one. Unfortunately, in the US, a-ha is not as popular as in other parts of the world. In June of this year, the documentary A-ha: the movie was released at the Tribeca Festival.
