Homemade Drum Sanders

    While making the knife I ruined five sanding drums and a pack of ten here is around the same price as a table saw blade. So I decided to make my own from sandpaper and dowels.
    This also offers the benefit of making them in grits and sizes not available on the market.
    It's a fast process and you get a lot of them from a small piece of sandpaper. All the sanding drums in the final picture are made from only the 60 grit sandpaper sheet. The other two sheets will be made off camera.
    They are quite useful for shaping wood, like for knife handles. You can see a lot of them in my knife video, where I used them in almost all stages of the build.

    This was a great video, thanks for taking the time to show us how to save a few dollars. I'd like to add that the thin Dremel cutting wheel can be used to cut a slot into the shank portion of the screw so that a small screwdriver can be used to install or remove the dowel portion.

      @dunlaoghaire40 Před 8 lety +3

      +William Charles Agree 100%. There are far too many convenient, quicker, & functional changes dremel could make but nothing much helpful & cheap has changed been made since they turned the sun on. I always check out those cheapy dremel knock-offs cause some neat items can be found in the kits.

    • @williamcharles9480
      @williamcharles9480 Před 8 lety +3

      dunlaoghaire Amen, to that. Those Harbor Freight knock offs when on sale can be had with all kinds of attachments for the price of just a couple of the Dremel attachments. The motor portion of those kits are really cheaply made, but who cares? It's the attachments that make for the value.

    This Idea is Great! and it should be pointed out that your Idea could applied on Drum sander of a much larger scale such as useing a 2 inch dowel and mounting it to your Drill Press a sacrificial board to the adjustable work table and the rest writes itself now if you were to buy a drum sander like that it would set you back a small fortune but a few hours in the shop and you have a decent work around assuming you turn the dowel yourself on you drill press if you don't have a lathe I have both so i'm very lucky

    • @Grizzydan
      @Grizzydan Před 5 lety

      For larger drum sanders you can build a notch and tapered keyway so you can fold lengths of sandpaper and tuck it in and not waste wood.

    you make it look so easy, there have been so many times in the middle of the night when i needing a sanding drum and didn't have any. Every time i ended up wasting way more time trying to make a usable drum then it would be to go get some. Evidently the ability to make a perfect center hole is a gift from god only for the chosen and I ain't one of them!!!

    • @TheSmallWorkshop
      @TheSmallWorkshop  Před 8 lety

      Even if the hole is not perfectly centered they still work fine, they just wear faster on one side. Unless the hole is really off, then they vibrate too much. But the jig I used made holes close enough.

    What grit paper was that? I have cut a slit in the shaft "nail or screw" donor and made a flapper type wheel... You can adjust the sanding pressure by controlling the distance with that little setup... Quite good for removing the aluminum transfer from the piston onto the cylinder in rebuilding small engines. I love this idea ... And I'll bet five bucks they last longer because the quality of the paper is actually better in your homemade ones!!! A++
