While making the knife I ruined five sanding drums and a pack of ten here is around the same price as a table saw blade. So I decided to make my own from sandpaper and dowels.
This also offers the benefit of making them in grits and sizes not available on the market.
It's a fast process and you get a lot of them from a small piece of sandpaper. All the sanding drums in the final picture are made from only the 60 grit sandpaper sheet. The other two sheets will be made off camera.
They are quite useful for shaping wood, like for knife handles. You can see a lot of them in my knife video, where I used them in almost all stages of the build.

Good enough for all of us! That's one of the best tips I've seen on here. Thank you. I can see a day of sanding mandrel making soon.
Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thank you Brendan!
+The Small Workshop Brilliant video. Save f#ck loads of cash ---- thank you
Brilliant...
This was a great video, thanks for taking the time to show us how to save a few dollars. I'd like to add that the thin Dremel cutting wheel can be used to cut a slot into the shank portion of the screw so that a small screwdriver can be used to install or remove the dowel portion.
+William Charles Agree 100%. There are far too many convenient, quicker, & functional changes dremel could make but nothing much helpful & cheap has changed been made since they turned the sun on. I always check out those cheapy dremel knock-offs cause some neat items can be found in the kits.
dunlaoghaire Amen, to that. Those Harbor Freight knock offs when on sale can be had with all kinds of attachments for the price of just a couple of the Dremel attachments. The motor portion of those kits are really cheaply made, but who cares? It's the attachments that make for the value.
So simple and yet... so awesome. Great video!
This Idea is Great! and it should be pointed out that your Idea could applied on Drum sander of a much larger scale such as useing a 2 inch dowel and mounting it to your Drill Press a sacrificial board to the adjustable work table and the rest writes itself now if you were to buy a drum sander like that it would set you back a small fortune but a few hours in the shop and you have a decent work around assuming you turn the dowel yourself on you drill press if you don't have a lathe I have both so i'm very lucky
For larger drum sanders you can build a notch and tapered keyway so you can fold lengths of sandpaper and tuck it in and not waste wood.
Beautiful! I love the centering jig with the brackets. Pure genius! And the modified screw was a great idea, too. :)
A GREAT idea, people seem to forget the things they buy (at high prices), are man-made, hopefully this will remind them, thanks for sharing brother.
Děkuji . Dobrý nápad , hned jsem ho vyzkoušel . S úspěchem.
Oh, I'm totally gonna have to do this! That jig is especially clever. Gotta love how you can use a rotary tool to build tools for itself!
Thanks, that was my purpose, not to use fancy tools so anyone can make them.
What a great idea. I will definitely have a go at that.
Holy crap. That's brilliant.
Great Idea,and costs almost nothing!
Thanks!

Got a secret for making the cut off wheels?
I get very little use out of them before busting them up :/
Some literally fly apart as they touch whatever I am cutting
+5th Columnist CUT CIRCULAR PIECES FROM A CHEAP ANGLE GRINDER BLADES , OR BROKEN ANGLE GRINDER BLADES
Buy 4-1/2 angle grinder blades in bulk, or even the larger 14" chop saw blades and use a hole saw to cut smaller pieces out of them. Just go very slowly so it cuts cleanly instead of tearing and breaking.
Inexpensive, effective and DIY...What a brilliant concept. Thank you!
Such a simple solution! Thanks for posting this up mate!
This is brilliant. Ive been holding on to these things well beyond their useful range, because I didnt want to buy more. Thanks to this idea, I can actually use them productively.
Wery cool my friend. Recently I need something like that. Next time I will be ready)
What a great idea! I am so glad I watched this. Thank you for sharing.
very cool!
Nice vid thanks for sharing I tried making some of the some of the stones out of carborundum grit and super glue, worked pretty well.
Can't let a good idea and video go unmentioned. Awesome
Cool idea
Subbed for the amount of precise detail in such a small, easily replaceable tool. Very well done. Thanks for sharing :) Will definitely be using some of your techniques to make my own.
Love the centre drilling jig. Thanks.
I think you've got it, Meistro!! Good job.
what a great teacher you would make, who knows! maybe you are.
it defenetely is a great video and an awesome way to make a drum sander.
WOW!! Finally someone was smart enough and good enough of a craftsman to give us this great idea!!! Thank you sir!!! I’m gonna subscribe to your channel
Cara, muito obrigado por postar esse vídeo! Eu estava mesmo precisando urgente de uma idéia dessa. Parabéns pelo trabalho, muito legal mesmo! Boa sorte, fique bem e em paz, vlw!
Love it! I was wondering what you were going to do for the arbor -- a cut off screw is way simpler than what I would have come up with. Nicely done!
OK, I don't want to take your time, so I will be short: with this video you answered several questions, that are very important to me! Excellent method. Thank You! Greetings from Hungary!
Great idea. And the cutest vise I've ever seen ;-)
simple idea, but so great. I'll be making some of these.
Thanks for sharing.
I love using dowels - any size or material, made, bought or picked from a bush. Love your example & looking forward to more - thanks!. Regards from the Kalahari
you make it look so easy, there have been so many times in the middle of the night when i needing a sanding drum and didn't have any. Every time i ended up wasting way more time trying to make a usable drum then it would be to go get some. Evidently the ability to make a perfect center hole is a gift from god only for the chosen and I ain't one of them!!!
Even if the hole is not perfectly centered they still work fine, they just wear faster on one side. Unless the hole is really off, then they vibrate too much. But the jig I used made holes close enough.
Superb! Quick, cheap, effective! Thanks for sharing.
I know the vid is kind of old, but that's an awesome tip. Been looking for some small drums to sand home made wooden knobs and this will be perfect. Very cost effective, as well. I'm glad I happened across this one. Thanks!
I live in S. E. Asia and buying such items is difficult. Your video is so clear and logical I felt like cheering Hooray! Thank you for thinking about us DIY-ers who don't have Big Box Stores next door. Subscribed immediately.
Thank you too! Happy you found something useful here!
This is brilliant. Those damn things are super expensive where I live and as for a variety of grits, no chance of that. With your method I can make as many as I need quite cheaply and also make them in any grade I need. Subbed. :)
If using the thin discs breakage?? I glued two together lot stronger jat
perfeito
Very good idea, thank you for taking the time and effort to share with the world. You are the man!!!
Excellent method for centering cylinders
Great idea and pretty easy to do too! Nice work.
And here we have a contender for the most awesome shop tip of 2015!!! Great, thank you so much for sharing!! :)
Not even close, but thanks a lot for your comment! :)
Hi, thats a sweet tip indeed! Thanks for putting it out there! Its given me some interesting ideas ..
Excellent Video. Great idea and very nicely demonstrated.
Fantastic!! Will definately be doing that from now on. Thanks as always
This is GENIUS! I have a dremel (knockoff) and every time I use the drum sanders the confounded things unravel and fly off the mandrel!
Thanks for a brilliant idea. I'll have a go at making some of these.
Personally I'd have never thought of this. So simple and pure Genius!!
Thank you Terry!
Very nice and practical. Certainly look superior in use to those flimsy pre-fab drums. I'll be sure to make some for my own use, in various sizes and grit.
Thanks for the great video!! You just showed me how to save a bunch of money, plus I can make them different diameters, lengths, and grit. Thanks again.
Thank you too!
Pretty cool idea! Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Brilliant idea and a real money saver. Thank you.
This is great. It looks way more efficient than a drum. No slippage and easier to change up if you are in tight spaces.
Oh gawd! Talk to me about slippage. The bloody things unravel, become loose and fly off the mandrel. This way ain't nothing flying nowhere!
Works suprisingly well! I think I'm going to try this soon :) Haven't used the dremel in a while
The "dremel" is my go to tool whenever possible, since it's small and quiet, two necessities in my shop.
How simple, yet brilliant.
This is extremely helpful thanks for the video!
Very clever, gonna have to try this.
Thanks!
You didn't indicate you've won a Nobel Prize for this trick! Oh, you didn't win? Well you should have. You have one from me. In my area there are no small Dremel drum sanders available anymore, except for those I will be making tomorrow. Much thanks & appreciation.
LOL, thanks, glad to be of help to fellow makers!
Awesome sanding drums. Thank You for sharing.
Thank you too!
Definitely one of the best online tips I’ve seen!
Very good idea and very well done.
Thank you!

you are very creative. i have watched a few of your videos. I just subscribed, thank you.
Great tip. I'll be making some of those myself!
Absolute genius! Thanks for sharing dude.
Very clever. Thanks for posting.
seems much more stable and heavy duty than the usual dremel attachments. Good job!
Thank you!
Great idea! Thanks for sharing it!
Damn!!! That's awesome! I can't believe i didn't think of that!
Thank you!
Your use of string made all the difference in making this a viable idea.
WOW nice and cheap Tools , thx a lot 4 sharing ur Ideas here , hope u will show us more
greatings from Germany
Great video thanks ! I'll be making them straight away tomorrow !
what a BRILLIANT idea!!
Thanks!
My dad doesn't like it when I use his drum sander & he just washed the vehicle he drives, thanks for a mobile solution. +1 sub
That is brilliant. Thanks for sharing!
Good Job! Keep up the good work!
its just simple and brilliant. love it..i love it thsnks a lot
Excellent tip man, thanks for sharing.
That works great! I know buying pre made ones blow up in a matter of seconds. Going to make my own from now on.
Thanks! Glad you find it useful! If you want them really tough use sandpaper made for band sanders. It's virtually indestructible.
Wow! Superclever. Thanks man.
Very nice. I like working on a budget!
That's very clever. Definitely going to try this one myself.
Thanks, they are very easy to make and quite useful!
What grit paper was that? I have cut a slit in the shaft "nail or screw" donor and made a flapper type wheel... You can adjust the sanding pressure by controlling the distance with that little setup... Quite good for removing the aluminum transfer from the piston onto the cylinder in rebuilding small engines. I love this idea ... And I'll bet five bucks they last longer because the quality of the paper is actually better in your homemade ones!!! A++
Love how you test for orbital movement.
fantastic and you can make longer drums, I'm on it, Ta! and well done
Wish I'd seen this a couple of weeks ago! Never mind, it'll come in handy in the future no doubt. Great vid. Thanks!
Thank you too!
Nice work man.
Thanks for sharing the tip.
Thumbs up for sure !
Thank you too, Eric!
They looked perfectly centered!
Muy buen invento.Felicitaciones !!!!.(buenos Aires Argentina)
Thank you!
really nice work
excelente idea, ya aprendi con tu video hacer mis repuestos.....
Fantastic I bet the same thing can be done for spindles on a drill press....
This reminded me I need to make a spindle twice as long as the default ones...
Спасибо!!! Всё простое так просто. И не надо ни каких заморочек.
Your freaking amazing my man! Thank you once again.
this video will run two ideas ! Greetings from a Brazilian + a subscriber
I would only ask about their durability, but seeing how easily they can be made I don't have the need to. Great idea.
good idea!
Thank you!
Gosh darn BRILLIANT man! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you too!
A very good Tipp, thanks fort sharing!
great video i like how you just show how to do it you didnt feel the need to explain what a hacksaw is or you can use any leanth ruler
to the point
Wow that is just great! Thanks for sharing :)
