Making A Knife From Pruning Shears

- I bet every man that ever held some pruning shears imagined them as a knife. I know I did! That's why, when we broke the handle on ours I decided to make a knife out of them.
The blade was of decent quality and basically it was designed to cut wood, so it should make a great shop knife. The chisel grind will prove useful while tracing a line after a straight edge and also should allow for more precise chip carving because of the zero angle on one side.
Since the "tang" is so short I doubled the handle with aluminum and also used the large hole as an oversized pin to take the pressure while chip carving. It's also great for hanging the knife tip up on the pegboard so it's easy to grab while working.
The wood scales are made from an olive wood cutting board that was thrown away since it's full of cracks. Since this is a shop project I saved the nice figured wood for better things and used the dull part on the side. The only fancy detail is that I tried to take advantage of the natural curvature of the wood to match the handle.

This is not a tutorial, it's just for entertainment! A lot of tools and techniques shown here are very dangerous! - Jak na to + styl
The fact that you didn't say one word and just showed the work being done with the sounds made this video a damn work of art. Thank you! amazing knife as well.
Thank you, it's easier for me to make this kind of video so I'm happy you liked it!
A real masterpiece my friend Made with inspiration and real craftsmanship. But what are you going to do with it?
@@Irene-iu9sj I was thinking same thing as the metal would not be able to sharpen enough as a wood carving knife!..
They're _pruning_ shears, dear heart! Have you seen what the replacement cost of _one_ blade is? That blade will make one _damn' fine knife_ !
One of the coolest knife construction videos I have seen. The re-purposing idea was brilliant, the techniques with basic tools were awesome, and the final product exceeded my expectations. Awesome video.
Thank you Matt!
Beautiful. That is one chunky, heavy-duty knife.
One of the best tutorials I've seen on the net! Thanks!
love the demonstration at the end ... as well as the knife, nice work!
lol glad you agree. top notch work and a beautiful knife
I know I'm just sitting here watching YT videos but I still value my time. I enjoy finding "no nonsense" videos like this one! (great editing) I also enjoyed the fact this is outside the box! What a beautiful final product!
Beautiful...now I am going to attempt one.....thank you love your work
Finally a video of someone making a knife without all the fancy tools like a table saw, belt sander, and ban saw
Why would anyone need a table saw for a knife?
Okay but what's so wrong with using those?
@@sakuraogami6885 It's not wrong, just not a great tool for knife making in general, because most functions u need for knife making can be achieved (even with better efficiency) using more compact, more simple and safer tools. Table saw is dangerous, uses lots of power, makes lots of noise, inconvenient to use, not too precise, making it one of the tools that should only be used when there is no other feasible option
hòa mạnh idk, the belt sander seems pretty convenient
@@sakuraogami6885 I was talking about table saw though
Everything about this is interesting. Project, editing and your making. Great work.
I love how nothing in his shop is or gets stuck in place, quick and easy just how i like it!
BEAUTIFUL!! A great job you did. Thank you.
I should be doing my homework but instead i'm watching this. Not gonna lie I was pretty entertained.
Sweet! I have some broken shears....hmmm might have to put this one on the Things-To-Do List soon!... Another Great video Man! Have A Super Blessed Week!..... Gus
I could continue watching and enjoying for hours....
Smooth, skillful, unique and amazing.
Thanks for reminding us how we can still use our minds and hands.
Simple yet brilliant editing, lots of heart.
That is pretty sweet!
Coming from you it means a lot, thank you!
That thing is so sick man! Your a hell of a craftsman.
You are the best knife makers I have ever seen
One of the best knifes maker i've ever seen in my life
Нож такой формы удобен как садовый. Сам доводил до такой формы, только рукоятка в изоленте. Спасибо, беру на заметку.👍
That's really pretty. Like it a lot. And I saw this after it was featured by David on Make Something's Makers and Shakers
Great skills. The end product is a work of art. Thank you for showing all the detailed stages of work and preparation that went into this knife. Most enjoyable.
super cool thanks for putting your time into this!
Amigo , eso no es un cuchillo , es una gran obra de arte y una joya , felicidades iii
this video alone got you a sub!! that was such a powerful showcase of pure talent and craftsmanship. I am extremely impressed. very good job sir!
Thank you very much!
It was a pleasure to watch this video. The idea and how it turn out were awesome.
What a stunning piece of work, a beautiful knife. Thanks for this video.
Nice job beautiful knife.
Thanks!
Amazing
Thanks!
i wish more people focused on gaining useful wood/metalworking skills!! so cool!
Don't you ever dare to stop making stuff like that ;) Your design is beautiful! Thanks for sharing :)
I remember when my arms were covered in bald spots from testing knives 😂
Very well done. Looks like a skinning knife.
True true
Although a great design of a recycled blade (of an equally great quality steel), besides skinning, in terms of usefulness as utility knife may well be the limitation of it.
Dude, you should make a shop with custom home made things like vintage knifes and old tools that you have restored and stuff like all the antiques you have restored. You would get so much business
That was extremely enjoyable. What a craftsman
Hey this was awesome! Also, I spotted Parkside and Dexter, some of my favorite brands... You must be from europe... :) Keep it up! I'll make a knife as well one day...
Thank you! Yup, I'm from Europe.
per mancini?
@@TheSmallWorkshop salut Romanasule.frumos.
Are u romanian?
I have several Parkside tools, and I'm in the US. They sell them here too.
Is it possible to be attracted to a knife?
Definitely
without a doubt, yes.
+Jace Johnson i almost cry to see that sexy knife. I want to make one
If you are a magnet, yes
fucking beautiful, exact same thought entered my empty little mind when I saw the OP haha +Lovemeorleaveme
Wow! It's beautiful.
Wonderful work! This one is one of the coolest I've seen so far, seems very useful and stylish.
when drilling the aluminum with the blade attached, you should put some sort of stop at either end of the knife, that way if the drill bit were to catch the material and swing it around, the blade would hit the stop, instead of swinging full circle and cutting your fingers off
seems like the bolt that was holding the aluminum to the blade acted as a stop against the wood though,, nice knife
Yes, in this case the bolts were used as stops while drilling. Sometimes I use the small vice clamped on the drill press table to act as a stop. Thanks for the tip tho, safety is always important!
No, the bolts not doing anything, and even if the knife was attached to the wood block, it’s not held down either - please use a vice or clamp to deck. It clamp a piece of wood as a stop on back side of bit. Like a 2x4. Love the projects - but when you use the drill press I cringe!
You're very creative I liked and I smacked the bell

Great video! Thanks for putting it up!
That's a beautiful little knife, absolutely gorgeous
Nice piece of art, where can i buy 😂
That would make a nice little skinner.
Probably.
Great job. Looks awesome
Absolutely Fantastic... Craftsmanship is alive and well...its a good thing.
Much more fun than buying it at a dollar store.
So I am guessing you got it sharp? Nice work.
Watch the last 5 seconds for an answer to that question.
+Grant Goodson
I did, I was being sarcastic. You did an excellent job, I think I got cut watching the video.
Great idea and work!
Wow best small knife i've ever seen!
great video.I have a question only because I've never dine this but I'm going to try one in the morning, what is the sand paper stuff I'm guessing at what it was, that you polished the blade with?
It's wet/dry sandpaper.
+The Small Workshop thank you.I have a box full of old shears, have you ever used scissors??.
The only thing I would edit out of this video is the breathing in the background. Everything else is 🔥🔥
Excellent! thank you for posting
Amazing! Great job
that wood was fucking beutiful
Thanks! Someone was throwing it away :D
The Small Workshop why would people throw wood like that away
People who don't do any wood working would probably look at a piece of wood like that as clutter and want to get rid of it. Same reason why there are people who burn beautiful hardwoods as firewood. Luckily they're usually willing to part with the pieces for almost nothing (sometimes free if you're lucky), because to them it's nothing more than firewood
BBG-Christian not everyone knows the value of goodwood.
Ik right
Who watching this in 2019????
me
No I’m watching it in 2020
Thank you for this amazing project. I've gotta add this one to my list of tinker projects 😁
I really enjoyed this video from start to finish. Great job on the knife and the video.
that ll take a while to grow back
Almost there! LOL!
grinding non ferrous metal such as brass on a grinding wheel is VERY dangerous. The wheel can explode and potentially put your eyes out. No joke. The knife is nice, I just don't want anyone to get hurt making one.
+Bill Anderson - WHY CAN EXPLODE WITH NON FERROUS VS FERROUS ??!!! EXPLAIN PLEASE
+MonkeyBlueAss The non ferrous builds up in the grinding wheel and when is heated expands and blows out chunks of the wheel.
At which point did he use brass ?
Whoops, I just found it sorry
I was gonna make a pun but it was so bad I opted not to.
Wish I could like this video again, it's one of the coolest projects and most satisfying videos on CZcams!
Stunning with fit form and function! Great build, thanks for sharing. ~PJ
Thanks!
You should run some classes in prison, teach them to make proper knifes!I joke, you're very skilful.
struan john lol
I can watch you do this all day! I like your profiling!
Great job! Thanks for sharing the idea
A very fine knife. Another great video. Thanks.
