This is a great help to me, 22 year old bricky recently moved from East London where I was only doing commercial builds and large scale residential buildings e.g. apartments and also once the biggest site in Europe..Battersea power station, which is simply just Blockwork and brickwork running in to a line all day long and dealing with the likes of shelf angles and the constant introduction of new regulations of installing damp coursing.
I’ve now moved down to the south, just past Plymouth where stone work is the in thing. And it took me a while to get me head around it, for instance the random natural stone which comes in all shapes and sizes would often throw me and I’d spend more time digging through stone rather than laying. Because I was so used to laying a nice uniformed brick or block.
I haven’t laid this type of stone yet but I can’t wait to jump at the opportunity when given.
Keep these videos coming, as they do help us young brickies 👍🏽

Thank you very much for taking the time to demonstrate this. Makes a lot of sense now because gauging it to the wall ties in the blockwork puzzled me. Judging from my experience and content posted elsewhere, brickies from London the south east of England will benefit the most from this because you never see it done on sites around these parts nowadays.

Nice work, been a. Stonemason since 1989 , bricklayer and a stonemason are to completely different thing. , in general and mason can lay to the line but a bricklayer won’t know how to crop and dress stone ,

We measure back off the blockwork say 205/210 to the front of the stone and for me i plumb the stone corners by turning my level round and hold it up the arris of the corner stones and make sure the arris all in line to the edge of the level.. (hope that makes sense hard to describe) instead of holding it flat against it like u would brickwork..For ties we double up the jambs every 450 and same with Movement joints instead of every course like bricks...And as for cuts they say to never wall a peice smaller than it is taller..In other words a normal piece of stone is 140mm tall so never put a piece in smaller than 140 in length..Theres other diff ways stone can be walled just touching a few of the basics....Not trying to teach how to suck eggs we just do a lot of this stuff here in west yorkshire...

@@Tone_Team Your right mate it does take a good eye with stone...It is a lot more forgivng as u say...With Natural stone i revert back to imperial...So if i,m working with 3inch 4 inch etc i'll bed up and make my beds bigger..Ive found if u work metric with imperial stone and use 10mm beds its looks all wavey and shit.. I find bigger beds just take some of the wave and uneveness out of it.and natural stone dont tend to get jointed..I normally rake it out or bag it off..(Rub some hessian on the joints when it stiffend a bit)...And u can get around ur ties falling back because you have a variety of diff height stones to put in 2inch 3inch etc Anyways hope i dont come across as trying to tell u how to go on just sharing on how i do it...All the best

I am glad you found it helpful. This muck I used is from a Silo which is on our site. Silos are prefilled from a lorry and then all we have to do is press a button and adjust the water so it is a consistency we like. We are very fortunate, it is not often we have to use our own muck. Mix would me 1 part cemtent, 1 part lime and 4 parts cement. Normally a plastiscer is added to help with workability
